A little money apparently goes a very long way...

"State Sen. John Fonfara, D-Hartford, has been a strong advocate of giving consumers a choice besides cable for television service," begins a report in the Hartford Courant. Translated into honesty, they mean the Senator helped AT&T grease the legislative rails for their U-Verse IPTV service and entry into the TV market. Fonfara was so excited about AT&T's service, he sent out a mailing to his constituents, paid for with state money and printed on official Senate letterhead, alerting them to AT&T's "exciting new technology." Fonfara insists he was simply promoting competition.

Mailing much smaller in size than stated here

A letter sent by Fonfara on April 1 to residents on several streets in Hartford's Behind the Rocks neighborhood encouraged them to attend the event marking the local U-verse launch.
He pushed for competition; he got what he wanted; he is running for reelection; he is bragging to constituents. Gee, this sounds like the usual things pols always do.

Re: Mailing much smaller in size than stated here

He was advertising the services of a private company using taxpayer dollars.

This is after he wrote a law that was largely a wish-list for AT&T, and got the CPUC off AT&T's back for suing everyone who suggested AT&T should sign franchise agreements that prevent them from cherry picking neighborhoods.

But we agree this is "the thing pols always do."

Wonder what his asking price was for his enthusiasm?

It is legal>

Rep. Christopher Caruso, D-Bridgeport, co-chairman of the government administration and elections committee, which writes and oversees ethics law. Caruso said the letter doesn't violate state ethics laws or legislative mailing rules
And I don't think he was advertising AT&T but himself, since he is up for reelection.

That means little when we're talking about corruption under modern American law. Wiretapping citizens without a warrant will soon be legal. Bribing public officials is essentially legal if you play your cards right. Assigning lobbyists from industry to head key positions overseeing industries they represent is perfectly legal. Killing Iraqi civilians if you are an outsourced security contractor is legal. The list is endless.

There is legal, and there is right.

He's doing both, obviously.

Well, Karl, America had a chance to put Dennis "UFO" Kucinich in-charge and didn't. Him and his alien brotherhood could have fixed it all.

By the way, Iraq is about oil. So, a few hundred thousand Iraqis die in mass bombings. What's the problem? We need cheap oil so GM and Ford don't go bankrupt because their SUVs make them money. We can't let Honda's great mileage cars just take over without a war or two. Finland looks like they need an a@@ kicking about now.

And, considering Hillary & Bill Clinton have made millions from lobbying efforts (Bill did), Democrats are in on it too. Democrats have never refused to fund the war. Barack Obama either doesn't vote against it or just doesn't vote.

Bush had made some mistakes. It happens. He learns from his mistakes by never acknowledging them and moving on. Just because the world is united against us doesn't mean anything. Bush has plans to deal with that by uniting the world against China over Tibet. Bush clearly had this in mind when he invaded Iraq. Just wait till the Olympics in China and the heat will go to them. He's smart. His strategery is strong. Once everyone hates China, all this too shall pass. And, if it all fails, Dick Cheney shoots another lawyer in the face.

Yep, they used to call it franking privileges. Elected officials use taxpayer money to send out thinly veiled advertisements about how great they are. Happens every few weeks.

Not saying Karl is wrong to point it out, but it sure as hell ain't new.

Surprise, surprise!

Guess who contributed to Sen. Fonfara's election campaign in 2000? Why, it was the Southern New England Telephone-SNET PAC!

I didn't know state senators were responsible for promoting competition. If that were the case he shouldn't he have listed ALL of the possible companies? Besides the fact it just seems dead wrong you can't blame AT&T if this guy just decided to do it on his initiative.
