'Unlimited' from $40 to $30, 'Voice 1000' from $30 to $25

As previously noted, there's a lot of movement on the AT&T VoIP front lately, with the company's decision to stop taking new CallVantage customers indicating that there's a new BYOB VoIP product on the horizon for vanilla DSL (non-U-Verse) customers. As for U-Verse voice customers, there's some good news for those of you who've never been particularly impressed with the product's price point. With AT&T's launch of U-Verse Voice service in Northeastern Illinois this week, users are noticing that AT&T has dropped the price of their VoIP packages.

•U-verse Voice Unlimited, which includes unlimited local and nationwide minutes to any location in the U.S., Canada or U.S. territories was previously $40 a month, but is now $30 a month.
•U-verse Voice 1000, which includes 1,000 Call Anywhere minutes to any location in the U.S. or U.S. territories, used to be $30 a month, but is now $25 a month.

"I am switching from Call Vantage and the $50 install fee got waived," says one of our regular users who lives in the area. Discussion in our U-Verse forum indicates that AT&T appears to be testing some progressive pricing models in Detroit, where users say they have been able to get the Unlimited service for as low as $20 a month, and Voice 1000 service for as low as $10 a month.

With cable operators controlling an estimated 85% of the VoIP market, it appears that AT&T is starting to take the threat more seriously.

clubs:		 What wiring problems have you heard of causing fires? U-Verse internally uses your existing coax or they run new coax or cat5e.

Taxes for U-Voice should be similar to Cable VoIP's +/- $5 depending on area.

There were no fires nor were their wiring problems. Everything available so far indicates a bad batch of batteries from a specific manufacturer that caused 4 sites to explode.

Which is funny because it just as easily could have happened to cable TV too.

Real price

Not bashing but just curious. What is the real price after taxes and fees for anyone that has it. This is ATT so I expect they have some padding in there somewhere.

My internet and tv is $90 and with taxes it is a little above $3 more. I am not sure if phone is different but they have been trying really hard to correct a lot of problems they the regular voice and dsl had. Customer service for uverse is 10 times better.

 I'm very curious also. I have U-Verse MAXX ala cart with Vonage and DirecTV.

I've looked at my usage, and 1000 wouldn't cut it so my base rate would go up $5mo assuming taxes equal. Eliminating the power used by the Vonage TA probably makes that a wash.

Also my VOIP should be better since the traffic is shaped outside of my 10/1.5 service and my wiring would be simpler.

Hmmmm... the only downsides I can think of is the pain or porting a number and my desire to fund Vonage since they keep the Telcos honest.

Hmmmm... this might be enough to get me to switch back. I'm on the fence.

I've thought about it some and I won't be switching. I don't want to give up:

1) Ability to switch ISP without affecting voice service
2) Ability to receive voicemail via email ( this rocks on the iPhone )
3) International calling packages/pricing
4) Supporting an insurgent company and sticking it to the monopolies.
5) Ability to take my TA with me on vacations.

I thought about getting this but it is too expensive. I was considering a voip one for about $25 but i use my cell phone mostly. If i did as a tmobile customer i would just get the tmobile hotspot@home for $10. I dont see any of these other plans competing. Except everyone knows to go to their local phone company to get phone service, not necessarily their cell phone company.

TMobile is just like any indie VoIP it use the public internet right away. Cable VoIP's and U-Voice stay inside the company network till going to the switch. Which means is real QoS and doesn't affect your internet speeds. Which for most people isn't an issue but if you max out your download/upload it can be.

And it did have some issues when you maxed out your connection. I tested the t-mobile voip router and if i maxed out either my upload or download, the other person had a hard time hearing me. Others who tried the same thing did not have any issue. So, your mileage may vary.

Same here with Call Vantage. I was using the 2wire that's part of U-Verse fine. Then suddenly when I was downloading files for work or uploading stuff and it was a constant stream (were talking gigs at a time). Then the other person couldn't hear me and I could tell it was choppy. I had to add my Linksys QoS router into the mix to fix it.

Others said they had no problem though.

I use Skype all the time... and even over a VPN tunnel through a Squid proxy server, and it still works.

I'll admit that it is not as robust as a dedicated VoIP like cable or Uverse style.

I do like the Cable VoIP in the fact that the overall Internet connection can be hosed, and VoIP will still work (router outage in my area).

I'm glad to see (although too late for me!) that AT&T has decided to lower its price on VoIP (although it wasn't until CV stopped taking orders). This at least brings a triple play a little closer to my price point.

Eg. Over first year period:

TWC: $89 + ~$5 franchise fees for VoIP, 6Mbps/512kbps, Digital TV + 3 analog sets:
Monthly: $95
Year: $1140
AT&T: (1 tuner) $59 for U200, $35 for 6Mbps, $30 for Uverse VoIP
Monthly: $124 (assuming no other fees!)
Year: $1488, $1188 after $300 cash back

Not a whole lot of difference, slight advantage, TWC - extra TV's for free, no MIR cash back waiting.. and of course, the most important Uverse Voice is NOT AVAILABLE in the Los Angeles area!! That $30 VoIP = $57 POTS.

That's why for indie voip a good QoS solution is a great idea.

You shouldn't be seeing that. That means your RG is having issues or it's wiring. Try posting in the U-Verse forum.

This is what we need: competitive pricing. I currently have ComCap Digital Voice which is pretty good. However, their cable prices are insane.

I would be willing to give AT&T a spin if their pricing is comparable.

just the beginning..

cable voip is much more than calling over the internet. cable voip is dedicated bandwidth channels and qos (usually). you can also bet on average voip from anyone OTHER than a telco includes much more in the realm of features, online account & features management, etc. telco voip will need to play catch-up in a big way.. and not just on price. 3rd party providers morphed into click-to-call features, lower prices, and wifi device interface (skype phones, for example).

It is a very nice price point, I've already signed up for it. As expected, it was much cheaper than what I was already paying AT&T for phone service. I'm not exactly sure how that worked out.

i think customers are inclined to abandon ship and not look back after being charged a lot for pots. this way, although they may get less overall, they still keep customers. whereas at the old price point, no one even considers it.

Yup... I for one, have abandoned ship, as I was paying almost as much for ADSL (3Mbps) and POTS as I am for TWC Voice, HSI and digital TV. I'm sure that next year, I'll have to renegotiate pricing, or I'll be going OTA for TV.

I'm still waiting for U-verse in my area. Nice to know they have this service now as well. I pay $40 now for unlimited nationwide with AT&T.

As long as I can keep my number and use my fax machine.
