AT&T Launches Video Search WebsiteTelco eyeballs delicious video content ad revenue 02:38PM Monday Nov 10 2008 by Karl Bodetags: Video · competition · business · contentFrom the "we're terrified of becoming a dumb pipe" and "that content ad revenue sure looks tasty" departments comes news that AT&T has launched a new beta video search portal dubbed Videocrawler. According to the AT&T press release, the portal was developed in concert with Divvio, and is designed to index hundreds of millions of video clips from thousands of sites. According to AT&T, the new beta portal will be banner ad supported, while indexing content from existing Internet video websites like Hulu, blip.tv, MySpace Video, Google Video, and YouTube. The portal also allows searching for audio content (podcasts, ringtones, radio). "We want to do everything possible to connect customers to the content they want, and today more than ever, what they want online is social media," said Sean O'Leary, vice president, AT&T Business Development. "With thousands of popular video Web sites, it's become more and more challenging to find, sort and manage all of the best clips that are out there. That's exactly what we're working to solve with VideoCrawler by allowing users to search from an index of the most popular media sources from across the Web." That burning desire to connect customers to additional video content would of course be heavily monetized by AT&T's exploration of low bandwidth caps. In AT&T's ideal world, they not only control and meter the bandwidth, they deliver the content and cash in on the content advertising as well. Whether AT&T would be better focused on simply running a network (instead of developing video index portals or 3D web browsers) is yet to be seen. Related:- The High Price Cable TV 'Cartel'

| Re: Wow Not to mention it would undermine their argument for caps. Seems to me they're going too fast with the Death Star rebuild. They just don't have all of the pieces in place to avoid consumer backlash. -- "For duty and humanity!" - Moe Larry and Curly (MEN IN BLACK, 1934)...These are the guys we have in Congress | |

| said by Karl Bode :I'm sure they'd like to, but I just don't see them getting away with that. Any attempt to do this will raise the Network Neutrality Red Flag. In this case, they are giving preferred service to their offering due to not charging Bandwidth Usage to the user's Cap Account (instead of the usual "Pay Us and you will get better QoS" scenario). | |

I don't think they care about their appearance, there too many red flags out there now for this one to matter. The same preffered status would cause just as many red flags. These services are fast becoming like insurance companies where all they have to do is advertise their product, not deliver. Cherry pick the clientele, and make the consumer jump through hoops just to use the product. And if they bill you wrong, well you better pay it or like Sprint, they might just dump you as a customer for complaining. God help anyone that actually holds a company to what they advertise!

| I'm Just Waiting for 3-min HD ads on AT&T's Homepage Of course unsuspecting people who run the AT&T's rebranded browser will go there automatically when they go on the internet. I can also see them making the ad non-removable, so anytime anybody goes for support on their website, you are forced to view the HD content. Of course, it would be our fault for going over the caps because we are such bandwidth hogs. | |

| Ought to be the "Let's Create a Conflict of Interest" Dept. I love stuff like this.
On one hand, if they behave themselves and don't give it any special preference, then no harm no foul. On the other, aside from disclosing everything about the servers, software, and network (including configurations), there's no way to be completely sure that they're playing fairly.
I wish we could stop the madness somehow. -- Robb Topolski -= funchords.com =- Hillsboro, Oregon More features, more fun, Join BroadbandReports.com, it's free...

| not very impressed I just took a look at the site and I must say I wasn't very impressed. The faux-Windows effects and the garish color scheme was definitely an eye-assaulting experience.
And what's more, Google already does this, while still maintaining a UI that doesn't assault you. Hopefully this site goes the way of most ISP portals, to the wayside. -- --- Drilling for more oil is akin to giving a methhead the keys to the meth lab.
