| Priced to compete with Cable Digital Phone Services at $40/month for unlimited service.
Apparently, there is a market for this, since the cable companies have been selling Digital Phone like gangbusters at this price point.
The fact that standalone VoIP services at $20-25/month are readily available does not seem to sway this piece of the market. AT&T even sells one of them: CallVantage.
My speculation is that this piece of the market can't or won't deal with the complexity of bringing a third party into the mix, and installing a separate box next to their DSL or cable modem.

| Re: Priced to compete with Cable Digital Phone Services I fully agree with your last paragraph. I do not wish to deal with a VOIP company, or piece of equipment (SunRocket comes to mind)to diddle with if I can not get dial tone.
Essentially, I want the phone to work when I pick it up and not have to worry about dealing with a VOIP provider and a DSL provider, possibly a CLEC, and incumbent LEC. The savings are just not worth it.

| Re: Priced to compete with Cable Digital Phone Services yeah I would not call them "stupid" per se. There's a tier of every market that serves people who want "simple, single vendor, service" and are willing to pay a pretty big premium for it, compared to what they could get if they were willing to go "off-brand" or "needs some integration".
I have 2 daughters that have put iPods on their christmas/birthday lists. When I tell them "you can get the same thing for about 1/2 the price" they say "no I want an iPod." Same for Monster, Bose, etc. They spend an awful lot to position themselves in the market for consumers who don't want to or can't take the time to look at things closely and work to get their tech fix.

| Re: Priced to compete with Cable Digital Phone Services Yep, blind brand loyalty. I laugh at those who carry iPods instead of cheaper mp3 players. Same way as people who buy a $1000 handbag which is nothing but a synthetic leather strap and fabric, when I can goto Chinatown and get almost the same thing for $40. | |

| said by smokarz :well, these people might not be stupid. they just happened to have the money that we don't. I wouldn't say that. I could easily pay for my Cable company's phone service at roughly twice what I pay for with my VoIP service, but I don't. It isn't that I can't afford that cable company's service, but rather, I would rather use that extra $20+ a month for things like a night out, etc.
The fact is that people who buy phone service from the cable company or this new service from ATT aren't the one's who go looking for the best deal, otherwise they wouldn't be buying those services. It takes time to research all of the offerings that are out there.

| 1500ft from box...no service this company...sigh
the box is around the corner and they still tell me i cant get the service
just like DSL....it took 3 months to finally find a tech who would confirm i had access to the service and their systems just do not count my street for some odd reason.

| Vonage all the way! I have had Vonage for over two years now and would NEVER go back to landlines..or pay Comcast prices! It is so nice to know, EVERY MONTH, what your phone bill is going to be, and not having to pay an extra $25.00 to fees & taxes on my old landline company! which turned out to be a nightmare to roll my phone number over-which was Talk America.. I even had to call the Federal Trade Commission on Talk America, and boy did they let me have my phone number then! | |
