The videophone returns -- sort of...
(old news - 12:14PM Tuesday Jun 19 2007)
tags: Video · business · wireless · telco · content
At the 1964 World's fair, AT&T wowed attendees with a video phone, and their 1969 annual report predicted that by 1980 they would sell $1 billion worth of the devices. That never happened, obviously, with opinions on why ranging from technical limitations to customer fear of transmitting their bedhead.

AT&T is back with a variation of the theme, today announcing their new Video Share service, which lets their 3G wireless phone users transmit live video to others during conversation. Users can pay $4.99 each month for 25 minutes of Video Share usage or $9.99 each month for 60 minutes of usage. The company also says users can "pay as they go" for 35 cents per minute of use.

The service is initially available in their Atlanta, Dallas and San Antonio markets, with further markets available by July. The company says users will eventually be able to share the video via their "three screen initiative" (read: you'll someday be able to share video content between U-Verse/Homezone, your mobile phone and your PC).

A recent report argued that 3G videophones would never take off because such devices make it harder to lie.

Done

This is now easily doable with many VOIP solutions and/or IM programs.
I'd be curious if POTS has enough available bandwidth to do any meaningful video.

Re: Done

Video is doable over and ISDN with both a & b channel's bridged(128k).Works great, but don't put them in that much anymore.

I'll never give up right to lie on phone to annoying callers

... and video just makes that a lot harder. Of course, for friends and relatives, the ability to send video when desired would be nice, but it is still too pricey.

But having it on by default for all calls will forever be a non-starter for me and probably for most others.

Indeed... I looked at getting a VoIP phone with video built in and realized that I would never know if the person who would be calling me had video, so just what I would need would be someone calling me as I am standing there, dripping wet in a towel after I've run out of the shower to answer the phone.

BTW, what is this "right to lie" BS you mentioned ?

BTW, what is this "right to lie" BS you mentioned ?
Everybody lies on the phone all the time. Sometimes, it is just to spare others feelings. Sometimes it just makes it quicker to get rid of an annoying caller. And sometimes it is in my best interests.

Say my local Mayor running for re-election calls and wants to drum up a vote. And I hate the jerk, but may need him someday to get something straight with local government. I can tell him the truth and say "I hope you are defeated and crawl back in to the hole you came from" or I can say "sorry I can't talk right now, I have guests, but I'll keep you in mind at election time". Clearly the 2nd statement is a lie, but it is one I have no problem in telling.

Same thing with some boring relative I like, but just don't want to spend more than 10 minutes on the phone talking to. I could tell the truth and say "I can't take it any more, your story is boring and I have better things to do with my life than listening to you". Or you lie and say "nice talking to you, but I have to run off to an appointment right now. I'll call you later".

Now tell me you NEVER lie to anyone. If you do, then that is a lie also.

While I wouldn't say I never lie, I certainly don't make a habit of it. Not even to get someone off the phone.

I think using the video feature would be optional, not mandatory. Plus, you would have to be standing in front of the camera. You can easily move away from the camera or face it away from yourself or put a piece of tape over it.

Dear AT&T....

Videophones! That's super. Now can you please get off your ass and roll out 3g? Thanks.

uhh

AWESOME!

Now too bad 90% of wireless phones that i've seen have a camera that faces OPPOSITE of the screen....so they can look at my feet while I...look at their feet...

Re: uhh

That's because those aren't video phones. Take a look at the HTC TyTN, it has a video camera mounted on the front, near the screen that you look at. Cingular has the same phone except it's the 8525 without the video camera.

with the whole AT&T+NSA relationship, I don't like this....

if AT&T didn't have a relationship with the NSA, then this would be a neat service...but since they do.....yyyeahhh.

Re: Ick

there's a number of phone where the camera can swivel, just not a whole lot, yet.

Either way, I would be willing to bet that Sprint will be the next cell-phone company to launch this; they have the nation's largest mobile broadband (EVDO Revision A)...they just don't have any phones that supports Revision A yet.

I'd say that once those start rolling out, they just might ponder launching something like this.

that is entirely inaccurate;

Sprint currently covers 210 million people with EVDO (204-205 million of that is EVDO Revision A). Verizon has close to this, but it definitely cannot match it (as a side note Verizon still doesn't have very good EVDO coverage in Ohio, were as Sprint has has covered over half of the sate....factor in Alltel, and I'd push that number up to 5/8). Also, as I said earlier, Sprint has an agreement for EVDO with Alltel, Verizon does not.

I might also add that Verizon's network is not better; consistently at EVDOForums, Sprint typically gets higher speeds and slightly improved latency. And lastly, Sprint doesn't terminate their customers like Verizon does.

Plus, Sprint has hints at the fact that customers could use custom applications to make VoIP calls on the go...Verizon wouldn't even want to begin to think about that.

They have EVDO phones, but not EVDO Revision A phones.

The Mogul is EVDO Revision A capable, but you currently cannot use EVDO Revision A with it; by this fall, Sprint says there will be a firmware upgrade for it, however, that will allow you to use EVDO Revision A with the Mogul.

Similarly, this is when it is suspected Sprint will start releasing EVDO Revision A phones.

You are correct and I didn't dig deep enough. They do have Rev A PC cards but no phones yet.

Yup! You're right there; as a matter of fact, I have an EVDO Revision A PC and the special router...since cable, fiber, DSL, and a WISP are not available here....and I refused to get satellite.

I got ur $4.99 right HERE.

No one else think the pricing is rediculous? You're already paying for an unlimited data plan, and now you've got to pony up more for a couple of minutes of video?

Geez, once they start stocking phones with front-facing cameras, just download an app for this. Yeesh.
