Hybrid DSL/Satellite set-top in new market
(old news - 12:28PM Friday Aug 18 2006)
tags: Video · hardware · telco
After launching last month in San Antonio and parts of Ohio, AT&T today began offering their hybrid satellite & DSL media box in San Diego. Intended as a stop-gap measure for those the company can't yet (or won't) serve U-Verse and Lightspeed VDSL, the 2wire Media Portal (250GB hard-drive, HDMI, no HD yet) offers something remotely similar, allowing users to store and transfer home media, as well as download films. The service is available for around $10 more a month for customers who bundle DSL and satellite.

BS

Its a neat idea dont get me wrong. What happens if you cant get dsl i guess the box is totally trash.

Most people out in the sticks cant get cable or dsl only thing you have is via satellite, and with no dsl around what good is this going to do you again?

Just more smoke out of AT&T nothing new.

Are you saying at&t can supply this but they won't just to piss off gamers?

Re: at&t loves yanking your chain.

There are alot of parts of San Diego - like Julian, Ramona, that are pretty remote. I'm sure these people will just love it!

Re: at&t loves yanking your chain.

There are also a lot of other not-so-remote parts, like Mission Valley (where I live), where you can't even get ATT DSL. And as of about a year ago, have no plans to increase availability here.

I guess I'll continue to pay too much for TWC RR.

I think what they really mean to say with the part you quoted is, almost all of AT&T's customers

Cool hardware though

even though only a stop gap method still
the hardware and features are pretty cool.

If comcast offered a dvr like this I probably wouldn't have bothered building my own.

Too little, and too late for too little

Dear AT&T, (from a resident in San Diego)

I dropped your phone service for the digital phone from Time Warner.
I get my internet from Time Warner.
I get my cable and HD from Time Warner.
Ohh and I built my own DVR and slingbox it around where I want.

Don't need your half hearted attempt at competing. Plus TWC doesn't throttle my speeds on the internet or block my p2p sharing.

And when TW is down, you:

Don't have phone service
Don't have Internet
Don't have cable TV

And when AT&T is down, you:
Same thing
Same thing
Same thing

Doesn't matter who it is, outages happen for every company.

Yes, phone service from a telephone company CAN go down. It does happen, and has happened to me personally for multiple days (It was AT&T (SBC at the time)).

--

COX already offers a vasstly superior product than anything AT&T is willing to offer around here. AT&T should just withdraw from Oceanside.

Re: Too little, and too late for too little

True, but contrary to the articles all over the place... it is generally cheaper (at least here) to bundle. I'm talking more than a $5 savings too Of course cheap doesn't = good, but the uptime of services here are roughly the same... and you can't just get DSL from AT&T and phone from Vonage and TV from DISH... it will end up costing a lot more, the majority of that cost being the DSL due to AT&T being unwilling to offer naked DSL at a price less than the price with bundled phone.

not available to San Diego County residents - only City

from »hdtv.forsandiego.com/messages/14···55879282

Posted on Thursday, August 17, 2006 - 08:51 pm:

I just called their customer service number for Homezone in San Diego and according to CSR I spoke with the service is only available to San Diego residents and not San Diego County residents. So if your address is not in the "City of San Diego" then you are out of luck! It might be due to some contract agreement between San Diego City and AT&T but just a guess. The features they offer look pretty cool and the STB's DVR functionality sounds comparable to the Dish VIP 622 but I can't be sure. Maybe Lightspeed will come to Escondido instead.

Re: not available to San Diego County residents - only City

About throttling...I know TWC and ATT don't throttle or block p2p...but you don't hear the TWC execs pining on about their opposition to net-neutrality everywhere they turn (or do they and BBR doesn't highlight it as much)...but ATT??? cmon... So you are all correct that I slipped that AT&T slam in there was wrong and misleading. I should have chided the execs for their foot-in-mouth stupidity.

As for the eggs in one basket
I put my eggs in one basket because that basket is now $25 cheaper per month to have.

Bundle saves me $25/month for good. That's an extra trip to the local brewery (Ballast Point) once a month. AT&T didn't see the need to price match my savings even though they could tell I grossly underused the services I was paying for.

And I still think that a half hearted attempt at a stopgap before a rollout of a equal or superior service misses the point. You can have AT&T's stopgap and not do anything til their Lightspeed becomes a reality.
