Deploys 40Gbps technology across entire network
10:34AM Saturday Oct 25 2008 by Karl Bode
tags: business · bandwidth · world · networking · AT&T U-Verse
AT&T this week completed transitioning its IP traffic to a consolidated IP/MPLS backbone by deploying 40Gbps Ethernet technology over its entire U.S. ultra-long haul network, according to Network World. The company's shiny new 40Gbps IP/MPLS backbone is the base for all of the company's Web services, including consumer broadband, wireless data services and enterprise applications. Both AT&T and Verizon are now conducting tests of 100Gbps core network technology. Verizon says they'll actually start 100Gbps deployment over major network routes starting next year.

Why can't Comcast do this?

That's cool that telcos are starting to look at higher speeds in their core. Thanks for keeping us up to speed on all the news about the DSL world Karl. Why can't Comcast keep up with the telcos?

Why can't telco's keep up with cable is the question.

They are. Did you miss the article a few weeks ago about Comcast testing/implementing a 100 Gbps backbone?

Comcast already has N*40Gbps core links and started doing test deployments of 100G months ago.

Ah... didn't see any mention or reference of those "firsts" in this news clip... only telco kudos... Guess both Karl and I missed those news bits.

With all this "supposed" capacity, why the 250 GB Caps?

Why any caps?

Re: Why can't Comcast do this?

Because Comcast still has to buy bandwidth from AT&T and other backbone providers to have internet access. The bandwidth Comcast is upgrading is only for it's own network, not the one peeking out to the internet.

Re: Why can't Comcast do this?

Not really. If you look, seems like Comcast is pretty much just peering with various providers, mostly Level3 and Cogent now but with some GBLX and other stuff at San Jose, Chicago, Dallas and other big hubs. AT&T traffic actually goes first through L3 here, and switches networks in Dalas.

I can't but think that Comcast is getting bandwidth for practically nothing (sub-$5 per megabit). Caps are to introduce artificial scarcity in D3 markets. In DOCSIS 1.1 markets, they do it under the pretense of having enough bandwidth to go around (real reason: they don't want to upgrade unless there's competition).

Time Warner Cable has plenty of backbone connectivity last I checked...not as much as Comcast but stil plenty...and they want to cap at much lower amounts. AT&T, Sprint and Verizon all have their own national fiber networks yet they ca mobile usage at 5 GB per month. Artificial scarcity and last-mile problems.

Capacity on the backbone doesn't do much to help capacity on the segment that services your house. The upgrades they are talking about here are the links that go from city to city, not anything that comes remotely close to serving your neighborhood.

They can. They have already tested 100 gbps over their backbone and are already putting Cisco routers in place to support that:

The question is why can't AT&T keep up with EVERYONE ELSE. This is all well and good but everyone else is leaving them in the dust. They still have a max upload speed (U-Verse and otherwise) of 1.5 Mbps). That's disgusting.

They ever so slowly continue to increase their down speed but how much faster can it get before there's not enough overhead room on the up side? Someone here brought that up a few days ago. Is there a formula for how much overhead is required per Mbps or Kbps?

Yes. This means they are probabvly implementing a new technology, such as another company (forgot the name) where you used bonded lines to achieve higher DSL speeds.

They may be trying to get this done, hopefully. They're trying to get something done.

So, There are lots of Cisco/Comcast Press releases that show that Comcast is using CRS. Can you give me the name of the Cisco CRS 40ge Ethernet product Artard?

Of course, it's very likely that they are using the 1OC768-ITU/C.......but what do I know, you clearly understand this better than me

@bellsouth.net

Uh huh

See, I knew the stories about not having enough bandwidth for HSI were bunk. This is especially true with DSL where the bandwidth bottleneck is not out at a neighborhood node like it is with cable. AT&T has the ability to provide massive bandwidth to their central offices on the relative CHEAP. Bandwidth caps are just a way to rake in more dough. AT&T, if you implement caps I will be gone. Thank you.

John Keels

@bellsouth.net
AT&T is lieing when they tell us they need to implement caps. If they do that I'll be gone as a customer. Keep that in mind AT&T. You will lose a customer and I will tell everyone else.

The really cool thing about the upgrades, is that we have more opportunities to send personal notes to the NSA and we can be sure that they'll get there and be read.

Aren't e-mails encrypted? Meaning the KGB (NSA) can't read them either.

Re: Personal Delivery Service.

Most POP clients don't encrypt unless you install security certificates at each end. I can sniff one and reassemble it on my networks. Sometimes I get passwords.

If you use SSL to access your gmail account, the email itself travels in plain text. I think Hushmail is supposed to deal with that, but I'm not very familiar with it.

Hushmail PGP encrypts the message before it leaves the user and it only decrypts it when it is delivered to the recipient. In addition the User-to/from-Hushmail session is SSL Encrypted. Thus sniffing does no good.

How is it decrypted on the other end without a key and a mechanism to use it? Or are you HushMail on both ends?

Hushmail is normally done as WebMail (although I think you can have it send you a normal Mailbox). If you send or receive via a MUA you need to use PGP to encrypt or decrypt (Hushmail allows you to get your public and secret key when you sign up for the account). The idea of Hushmail is that the email account is in their domain so not only is the message encrypted but the identity behind the address is also (you use a autoXXXXXX@hushmail.com address).

Re: ATT backbone missing much of the bone

I cancelled my ATT Elite services and went with comcast. I was tired of thier slow speeds. I was suppost to be getting 6 mb down \ 1 up, but due to this distance crap, i was only getting 4mb down and 768 up. This was unacceptable.

Now that I have Comcast HSI, i notice a big difference.
