| said by pnh102 :I wonder if the many cellular holes around I-87 and other major roads in upstate NY will be covered now? Perhaps, but this is really much more about filling in the holes in Rochester, Buffalo, and the Finger Lakes region to the south. This is the old Cingular territory, and "more bars in more places" is downright laughable in this area when you put Cingular's legacy network AT&T relies on next to Verizon Wireless area here. It's not even close.
Cingular really didn't have much more of a rep than T Mobile around here based on their network quality and reach. So AT&T has a lot of catching up to do.
As to the "upstate" region east of Syracuse extending into northern New York, expect only incremental improvements. Height restrictions and continued outrage by residents having to look at the silly fake pine tree antennas they build will always make cellular service problematic in places like the Adirondacks. No matter what you dress it up as, a treetenna rising well above the tree canopy of a lot of monocultured pine forests stands out like a sore thumb.
Then again, some companies barely even try. They erected a ridiculous fake cyprus tree antenna south of Rochester. Of course, cyprus trees don't exist in this area, so it stands out straight away. The only thing they didn't add to it was fake Spanish Moss drooping off the lower branches. Or they could have thrown up a nice tall "palm tree."

I must be the only human who never really notices these things. I wouldn't care if there was a big, tall cell phone tower in the farm north of me if it meant me getting full signal inside my house.
I never understood why some people have such a visceral aversion to technology that makes life a little easier. The hilarious part of it, of course, is many of these people whine just the same when their cell phones do not work. -- This isn't fair! | yeah i-87 is horrible! after lake george it gets really bad. i went to plattsburgh this weekend and as NY'ers know its pretty desolate on the way there after lake george. sooo i couldn't use my phone most of the way there. in plattsburgh the service was weird. in & out / couldnt text for like 5 min sometimes/ 0-1-5 bars randomly. then i would go to the place where i got the 5 bars before and no service. sooo idk. i believe i was on roaming with Rodgers(CA based company) or UniCell. one time i called 611 and it said my carrier does not support this feature on the Rodgers Network. but its weird because at&t always had full features use on Rodgers. idk.

| Re: yeah i-87 is horrible! You were probobly on Unicell. Give AT&T some time they are going to gain some spectrum up there when Verizon Wireless takes over Rural Cellular Communications when approved. Verizon Wireless struck a deal with the state of New York in April to work with the APA on building a network up the Northway. Yes the service is tough north of Scroon Lake even with a 3 watt setup and external antenna. | |

| Re: yeah i-87 is horrible! They activated a whole new solar-powered wireless emergency phone system earlier this year. They recently modified the signs to indicate that cellular coverage is minimal, along with the "no 24-hour fuel next 75 miles" signs. | |

| Eastern NY ATT - help desperately needed I guess there was no word on fixing the atrocious signal and tower situation further south, like the Poughkeepsie area, was there? They can fix every other large and small metro nationwide, but heaven forbid they do anything with the Cyber Black Hole of the Hudson Valley! If you watch the signal levels for all carriers, they must believe there is no civilization outside of the Route 9 corridor. Fact is, the further away from Route 9 you get, the more spendable income there is. So how about actually attempting to get us something we can use - like SERVICE? | |

| Part of the problem Is that people call 1 mile north of NYC Upstate New York" Especially when a politician is trying to get votes from the real Upstate New York People.
I have an ATT tower 1 mile from my house and it is still on the EDGE network. ATT bought the tower from Cell One and they are still doing the tower maintenance. I was told by a Tier II ATT tech that we probably won't be getting the 3g upgrade anytime soon because Cell One's gear is completely different. I live near Howe Caverns half way between Cooperstown and Albany.
Broadband should be free. Our economy is failing and it cost's too much to drive all over the place to get the things we all need at $4.25 a gallon for gas. All the large companies that sell on the internet should kick in a few million each to get rural America a broadband solution. They would get their money back 10 fold by giving us the ability to shop from them.
