AT&T Expanding LTE to 12 New Markets
Including New Orleans, St. Louis, and Staten Island
by Karl Bode Tuesday 13-Mar-2012 tags: business · wireless · alternatives · bandwidth · AT&T · wireless · LTE
AT&T's PR team notes that the company will be expanding their LTE network in parts of twelve new markets starting next month and extending into the summer. According to AT&T, the next markets up for launch are Naples, Florida; Bloomington, Lafayette and Muncie, Indiana; Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Louisiana; St. Louis, Missouri, Staten Island, New York; Akron, Canton and Cleveland, Ohio; and Bryan-College Station, Texas. As of right now, AT&T offers LTE in parts of 28 markets nationwide, and expects to finish their LTE upgrades by the end of 2013.

Who cares?

As long as they're throttling and imposing caps on people it takes away from the excitement.

I guess everyone who owns a sports car should just leave it in the garage too then. I mean, where's the excitement in a car that can go 180mph if the speed limit is only 90!

I get what you're saying but your analogy is wrong. It should be who wants a sports car that you can go super fast when after a certain period it goes into limp mode and costs you exponentially more to operate?

Montana used to be reasonable and prudent until a guy was pulled for doing 85 because the police officer thought it was too fast. They threw out the ticket but next year the speed limit was changed to 75.

Why do AT&T sympathizers keep giving out kudos to each other? They're like a clan of corporatists... it's disturbing and unnatural.

Your car analogy is stupid. A far more accurate one is that you have a super fast sports car than can be driven at full speed for 10 miles. Afterwards you're massively penalized for driving faster than a pedestrian.

Re: Who cares?

WHO - GIVES - A - CRAP about WHO'S analogy is right or wrong.. can't you guys just talk about the facts with out trying to give people examples of the very topic being discussed? DAMN already! This has been going on for YEARS and it never ends!

AT&T throttles.. period! Like Comcast, AT&T is increasing it's speed and the topic is always about throttling.

Yes, it's bull crap.. but we all know it's happening. So?? ... do something! ... LEAVE! cancel AT&T service.. or sue them, or rally support in the public and put pressure on AT&T or on the elected official.

In this day and age of social media it's not has hard as it once was. Because of social media, elected officials and the government in general are having a hard and harder time of sweeping things under the table.. so?? ... what's going to have a better chance at changing things? doing some of the things I just mentioned? ... or sitting here on BBR giving a bunch of idiotic examples of the very topic at hand.

By the way.. these analogies are demeaning to the other readers.. the purpose they serve is to talk down to people by those who use them as they figure no one can understand what they're reading.

Point clear.. AT&T throttles their service which makes their advanced handsets less "fun" or "useful" which the term that come to mind is "crippling" ... or it can be argued that they're just being greedy. But can't anyone say that with out having to bring in cars... Yugos and BMW and speeding tickets etc?

And by the way, where it the outrage that AT&T is trying to pass off 700k to 1.7m HSPA+ as "4G" service? THAT is more worth talking about! Millions of iPhone 4S users who applied a patch got insulted by their phones telling them that they have a 4G phone. AT&T should also be embarrassed to do so knowing that they're not impressing me, and many others, with the speeds they call 4G compared to that of Sprints WiMax which gets upwards 10mb and Verizon's speeds.

AT&T is an embarrassment to themselves.. but people are worried about what analogy works to describe the joke that AT&T plays on people all day long.

GREAT way to distract from the topic at hand guys!

Oh boy. Just because you have a faster connection doesn't mean you will download more! Especially on the iPhone!

Advancements in wireless technology are deeply needed if we wish to continue to see advancement in other areas of technology.

Big Whoop....

Hey AT&T, you're only in 28 markets with LTE.... So what, this will bring you to 40... in what, nearly 6 more months?

Verizon's already in almost 200 markets with LTE.

AT&T doesn't permit tethering.
Verizon permits tethering on the iPad at no extra charge...

The 4G LTE iPad for Verizon is the best thing that could have happened at this point to illustrate how pathetic AT&T's network and pricing is in comparison to Verizon.

Can't hide it now with that faux G crap you've been pulling.
LTE has been mainstreamed.

Wrong wrong wrong wrong. Verizon has ton's of rural coverage already. What do you think Alabama and SD is? Look at freakin' Alabama's LTE coverage, it blows AT&T's away. I should know I have both carriers and live in the deep south. Verizon has MORE 4G LTE in TN than AT&T has 3G.

WHAT EXACTLY are you trying to prove here? what's your point? ...seems most people are on earth while you're wayyyyyy up on the moon here..

What' your point? You don't have Verizon LTE service where you're at... I see how that has to do with AT&T announcing new markets.. as well as the points he was bringing up with Verizon vs AT&T.. this isn't a general "dump on my provider because I'm unhappy" thread.. they exist here on BBR.. perhaps you should find the rants board.

Just because your only neighbor is betty the cow and the inbred jones family doesn't mean others don't have rural 4G LTE. If you want to talk about rural, Verizon has the best rural 3G coverage. Besides Verizon has already stated numerous times they will have their ENTIRE 3G network covered with 4GLTE by mid 2013...

Mercer county OH is almost all 3G except for a few spots with no service, and is pretty darn close to LTE. Its your choice to live where you do, if you want fantastic cell service have Verizon put a tower on your property or move into town. Thousands of OTHER place's have great rural service like Decatur, AL which has LTE from Verizon and roaming from AT&T.

att LTE map in LA is a lie

talking to real att people in ATT corp store the LTE coverage in Los Angeles is no where near the size of what is represented on these maps. these "coverage maps" are wishful thinking. used an att galaxy note yesterday and it said 4g lte on it. not sure I believe it. In three months I amy trade my hspa+ (fake 4g) phone in if I see this LTE thing is real.

Staten Island is a market?

I love AT&T here in CT with their HSPA+, but SERIOUSLY AT&T? Staten Island is a market? They claim to cover NYC, which really means Manhattan and a few other random places (maybe). If they say they have NYC, that should mean up to Stamford, the western part of LI, up into Westchester, and North Jersey as well. These guys are jokers with LTE. Verizon already has a stripe of Northern Jersey, all the way up to New Haven, the Western part of LI, and up past White Plains. Now THAT's NYC.

This is just shameful cooking the books to try and keep up with Verizon, who is now 6 months ahead of schedule, and will have 100% of their native 3G area covered with 4G LTE by mid-2013, plus some LTE in Rural America areas.

AT&T and their so called LTE Network!

I live in Dallas and AT&T launched their 4G/LTE Network here first!

The only thing I have to say about it, is when they say a specific city (Cleveland, OH, New Orleans, LA, St. Louis, MS) they mean that specific city -- no suburbs whats so ever!

I get 6MB down & 1MB up in Download Dallas (when I drive through). Go to any surrounding city, Mesquite, Plano, Arlington, Fort Worth, and you get their slow 3G service which you're lucky if you get 1.5MB down and 256K up.

Why is it that they act like it's a great thing when they are only doing the bare minimum? If you're going to compete with the big boys, then plan to play like a big boy!

LTE

Consumer technology and competing companies have a way of doing leapfrog. Company A deploys their widget, then company B deploys theirs in response to company A. The interesting thing is company B's deployment is a couple years behind but its two years newer based on what the vendors had available at the time. So what you have here is company B's deployment being superior but lagging in completion.

Will AT&T match that? Doubtful. Very doubtful.

They'll keep shilling HSPA+ as 4G.

Complaints

@faulkner.edu

All of your whining is pathetic!

I use my AT&T service for personal and business use, I have a solid HSPA+ connection (although I realize that its true potential is limited because it shares frequency with 3G), but I receive a constant 3Mb download speed across most of Alabama. I guess I'm confused why DSL equivalent speeds aren't acceptable enough for people to have in their pockets, cars, or anywhere else. Also, unless I'm missing the point, and you people are just complaining about having your "entertainment" limited, I don't see why 2GB/3GB/4GB is not enough to conduct business.

When it comes to LTE, from both Verizon and AT&T, the idea of caps is a simple and wise business decision that benefits the masses. I don't know about the rest of the users out there, especially those who want to use wireless service as their only connection (frankly, I don't care about those users because they are the ones that cost the most), but I prefer to have a lower data cap with constant speeds. Do you not remember the problems AT&T had/has because they unleashed thousands of unlimited users on their network? That exact problem is what the companies are trying to avoid now. Their studies have shown them that the majority of users (i.e., probably not those complaining on these forums) would prefer constant speeds, rather than unlimited data usage with sporadic speeds and connectivity.
