| Hasn't AT&T ruined enough telecommunications services? Now, they are possibly after DirecTV, my satellite TV provider! I just cancelled two AT&T residential telephone services because of their onerous, if not draconian, new TOS. Two 30+ year old phone numbers shot to shit. They better not fuck with DirecTV, or DirecTV will go out of business because of it. AT&T is death to independence and innovation. | |

I don't want them to benefit from any DirecTV goodness, and I certainly don't want even a hint of a takeover threat to get started. AT&T has fucked up and fucked over every trading partner they've ever had, including Dish.

| Re: Hasn't AT&T ruined enough telecommunications services? shut up stupid? WTF! yes i am a buckeye cable fan. my service goes way above AT$T's shitty service any day. Why should I pay ATT well and above what I pay for Buckeye? I get 8Meg down and 600K up. ATT can't even touch that for my $29.99 per month. And they won't. My cable TV is cheaper as well. I have no use for ATT's shitty service. They can keep their outdated network and suffer when Buckeye rolls out a new network yet again - DOCSIS 3 within the coming two years.
ATT will not be able to compete. Also go take a look at the State's Video Provider list. ATT has NOT even applied to offer cable TV service in Lucas County. So what does that tell you. They have no plans anytime soon. So kiss your ATT U-Suck service good bye.

AT&T never fully rolled out vanilla DSL, U-Verse is a couple of orders of magnitude more difficult. It'll never be significantly rolled out in my opinion.
This is a good thing by the way. AT&T may eventually have to roll out fiber to the home. That or Cable will eat them. -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use."

| Dish + Verizon I would think Dish naturally must align with Verizon now although I haven't seen that connection made since the AT&T Directv announcement leaving Dish a wallflower. I am missing something? Certainly Verizon isn't building out fiber 100% and would like a video product everywhere to compete with cable. | |

| hmm I would hope that they would not let a deal like this go through. IF it did it would mean they only broke up att to eventually become a monopoly over tv also.
Then verizon would buy up dish network
then it would either be the local cable company or local telephone company to get your tv.
then verizon and att would merge using the excuse that they have the cable companies to compete with and bam there is your ma bell again. Eventually that one big company would put the cable companies out of business.

Really had nothing to do with their policies, more than international compatibility concerns maybe. International compatibility? More like international dominance. While it is true that CDMA-based usage beats GSM-based usage in North America by something like 60/40, worldwide it is GSM with the upperhand to the tune of 90/10. Operating in a global market meant that AT&T should and did choose a technology that allowed them to offer international roaming services unmatched to this day. While it is true that UMTS and HSPA are wideband-CDMA derivatives they are still more direct descendants of GSM than of CDMA, 1xRTT, and EV-DO. No surprise then that like AT&T, Verizon (parented in-part by European GSM-based carrier Vodaphone) has chosen LTE as its 4G wireless technology over WiMAX (chosen by Sprint, another CDMA-based carrier)

| Wars Does anyone remember the long distance phone wars of the 90s when you would get a $50 check to switch providers and the deals were essentially the same so you just kept switching to get paid.
Anyone feel like that's what AT&T is doing with their satellite partners? -- OASAASLLS

| Some of us don't have a choice for broadband Ninja, out here in Redwood Valley it's Comcast (formerly Adelphia) HSI or nothing, the closest place with DSL from AT&T is Ukiah, 8 miles south of here. We are stuck with them for better or for worse, thankfully it's been the better most of time, we get 25000-30000 down and 2000-2500 up on the 8000/2000 Performance Plus Tier, and overall I give them a B+.
Edit-Our CO (located in Calpella, serves Calpella and Redwood Valley), like most here, isn't even equpped for DSL, in fact, in Mendocino County only Ukiah, Willits and Fort Bragg have it, the rest that can get broadband either rely on Comcast (serves Ukiah, Talmage, Calpella, Redwood Valley, Willits, Fort Bragg, Caspar, Albion, Little River and Mendocino) or Willits Online (a local WISP that serves Willits, Laytonville, Potter Valley, a tiny sliver of Redwood Valley, Fort Bragg, Covelo and Hopland).

| Not really new This partnership is really nothing new. Probably at least 10 years ago Southwestern Bell resold Direct TV to have a triple play long before anyone else had something similar. After that deal fizzled they went with Dish Network. Now after the Bell South merger they found themselves holding hands with two DBS providers and I imagine only picked Direct because they have a larger customer base, the Dish DVR litigation, and Direct industry leading HD offerings. | |
