Bumps AT&T's U.S. hotspot total past 20,000

AT&T spokesman Brad Mays gives us a nudge to note that AT&T has acquired Wi-Fi hotspot operator Wayport for approximately $275 million in cash. The integration of Wayport's operations expands AT&T's domestic Wi-Fi footprint past 20,000, and gives them a total global hotspot count approaching 80,000. It's a common sense decision by AT&T, given Wayport already manages the McDonald's Wi-Fi relationship and some portion of AT&T's Starbucks Wi-Fi network. Wi-Fi has been an increasingly important part of AT&T's business strategy in recent years, with the carrier giving free Wi-Fi access to all broadband customers, and more recently to iPhone users.

wait a minute.

What does this mean for Zune users at Mcdonalds? They better leave it intact or extend Zune's to use all ATT access points.

Seriously! All five Zune owners in this country might get really pissed.

They sold 5 of them? Wow!
My guess is they will stay pay per use for non AT&T users.

Well I have two Zune players so thats only leaves three more?
95% of my audio is in WMA. I know the IPOD didn't used to support WMA natively which is one of the reasons I didn't get one(I had no desire to have it go through another conversion). Plus I would rather have an MS product anyway.

I might consider an iPhone if it comes to Verizon and it has at least 80GB of storage. Otherwise no sale for me.

Awesome

I use it regularly at McDonald as I'm on the road a lot, and my parents travel full time (retired) so they use the WiFi spots a lot as well, it is an awesome feature. Truely with the mobile times.

I had a feeling this was coming...

We have been working with wayport for the better part of 4+ years I believe already. They have been managing a good part of the AT&T hotspots already.

Wayport...

I remember seeing a Wayport access service over at a resort I stay at. This place has Wayport access points all throughout the hotel area which you have to pay for, and then there's free Wi-Fi blanketing the rest of the resort, which is a massive area. I guess that charge is for convenience charges, as when I saw someone using WayPort access, it was routing them through the same connections at the same speed as the free access points.

If anything, anywhere I go, I look for Free Wi-Fi. Can't find it? I look for an open access point nearby for me to get on.

Re: Wayport...

I guess AT&T will be in the hotel wi-fi business now.

That's going to be an issue for iBahn, Goldentree, StayOnline and other providers.

Will this be free too?

I get free wifi with my AT&T subscription will this be free too or would I have to be one of those "VIP" type subscribers?
