AT&T, AMC Strike Retrans Agreement
While Dish Pulls All AMC Content from Lineup
by Karl Bode Monday 02-Jul-2012 tags: business · content · consumers · AT&T · AT&T U-Verse
After threatening that they'd sever AMC networks from their channel lineup after an AMC price hike lead to stalled negotiations, AT&T and AMC did manage to finally strike an accord over the weekend. As with all such retransmission disputes consumers get to be used like playthings during very public bickering (resulting in blackouts and other obnoxious campaigns), but the final details of the arrangement are never made public. "We respect AT&T as a partner that has a genuine interest in working with us to ensure their customers continue to enjoy our programming," says AMC. Dish over the weekend followed through on their promise to pull all AMC content from their lineup, something AMC continues to claim is related to an old dispute over the demise of Voom HD on Dish.

Silly networks and TV providers..

If AT&T stopped carrying AMC, then folks would download their AMC shows from the Internet. Result? AMC and AT&T would be out of that money.

Re: Silly networks and TV providers..

And some people cut the cord/trash the dish and download from the internet in a way that content providers get their money. IE: Amazon, Zune, iTunes VOD like I do. All commercial free and I get to watch when I want as many times as I want. That alone makes it worth the price to me!

At least those people are probably still paying AT&T for internet service!

There is only one loser in this agreement

There is only one loser in this agreement, and it does not take a genius to figure out who that is - you, the consumer.

Dish

Why does anyone take Dish Network seriously for any reason?

AMC gets a hit show, the hit show makes them more money, the hit shows makes their channel more popular. AMC decides since they are making more money then they have the right to DEMAND even more money for the same content.

Dish sees all this and says no.

Common sense is a very good reason to take certain matters very seriously.

Re: Dish

Except Dish has so many more disputes than any other provider.

Can't we assume that maybe it's them?

It is them, they generally take the stance that they do not give in to extortion. "Pay us $$$ because FooCorp did!" is not a valid reason to increase customer rates.

Do they lower customer rates when the content is no longer available?

Nothing really lost since AMC has a couple of watchable "hit" shows and IFC has become garbage (and not in HD). Netflix streaming for anything else.

I thought that Dish might give in like they did with the useless Weather Channel.

With the granularity of the Dish tuner/DVR features I've got nearly 100 channels blocked. One of the best features ever built into a receiver.

If they all cancelled AMC...

then AMC and other cable channels might rethink this constant BS of raising rates every year. If you think the cable co's and satellite companies absorb this cost, you are sadly mistaken. Look for a price increase somewhere for AT&T's customers in the near future to cover the costs of this deal.

I am so glad I cut-the-cord years ago...

Re: If they all cancelled AMC...

you do realize that someone has to pay for those techs that go to everyone's house right? to maintain those lines? customer service reps? Content pricing are everything and nothing else is BS. Look at what ATT has to deal with then lets talk numbers. Supporting that entire work force is more than the cost of the programming.

Every industry has to support their overhead with their pricing. But very few, if any, have yearly price increases that are higher than the rate of inflation like the pay-tv industry does.

I don't know why everyone gets so uptight about this...it's the way things are supposed to work in a "free market".

Dish giving away Roku's and credits

It's been reported on a couple satellite forums that some folks calling in about AMC are being given a free ROKU and statement credits to allow them to stream AMC programming.

I'm glad Dish dropped AMC...

I'm glad Dish dropped AMC. Every time a channel is dropped, it's a cause for celebration, as far as I am concerned. America has far too many cable channels and not enough worthwhile content to fill them.
