story category AOL Raises Dial-Up Prices
Seriously.

Tipped by TK Junk Mail See Profile
What do you do when your company once ruled the Internet, but years of incompetence and an inability to adapt to a changing market results in tens of millions of customers defecting? If you're AOL, you apparently raise prices. AOL is informing dial-up customers that as of July 27, they'll be raising the price of dial-up service from $9.99 to $11.99 per month. "This plan is still a great value," an e-mail to customers claims, "saving you at least $3 to $10 per month over comparable plans from other major Internet service providers."

Click for full size
While AOL still makes $2 billion a year from its dial-up business, they've made it clear they want to be an advertising and portal juggernaut instead of a connectivity provider. A price hike simply expedites the already bloody subscriber mass exodus. You can apparently stay at the $10 rate if you don't call for software support. CNET seems to believe the price hike is a work of genius, disguised as the work of an idiot:
Critics may be wise to take a deep breath before deriding AOL for a boneheaded membership disincentive for people who have abundant other options. The change could wring more revenue from low-value subscribers, lower AOL's costs for those who stay at the $10 rate, and shuck the least active, least valuable AOL members.
Having not seen AOL make a solid business decision for a better part of the last decade, it seems more likely that Time Warner is simply trying to speed up AOL's "evolution" from carrier to ad engine in preparation for a sale.

Same with me. With greater wireless coverage in rural areas, dial-up's becoming passe and AOL can't seem to figure that out.

Yep - same people have been saying AOL should have changed their model before they did - same people who are now saying AOL will die due to their changing their model for the better. In other words - typical hypocrite behaviour.

Since AOL chat rooms are the #1 place for gays to meet, they'll pay $11.99 since it is cheaper than going to the bar, the bathhouse, or Tom Cruise's, er, Leo DiCaprio or Jeff Gannon's home. I'm kidding on Tom Cruise; he sues over jokes about him and makes you join Scientology.

Actually, did you know there is a FREE HSI service for gays? In LA and SF, a CLEC gives free 3 mb DSL service if you are a member of the Gay Organization.

Anyway, back to AOL. I am still holding on to my email address, due to the fact that my grandparents are tied into our account.... but we are no longer paying and choose the free option once it became available.

I've been of AOL for years now.. Ever since Optiumum came to our area around 2001...then Fios year later...God, do I NOT miss the days where a 10 MB movie trailer download took over night to get done.

They stated that my billing was like a country club membership and that I must abide by their billing cut-off date. No wonder time-warner still reserves a half-billion for their accounting practices.

Every story I read about their woes makes me extremely happy. KICK,KICK,KICK.

There was an audio file going around a year or two ago on the radio station dial that had a customer record his cancellation call. It took him about 20-40 minutes to get it done, as the AOL rep would NOT let him cancel.

Maybe not so nutty...

Any dial up customer remaining on AOL really wants to be there. The Bosses must have decided (or researched) that these are really sticky customers. Here's an example of what they might be thinking...

Say they have 1,000,000 customers.

1,000,000 customers @ $10 a month = $10,000,000 of revenue

assume they will lose 15% of customers due to price hike.

850,000 customers are left at the higher price.

850,000 customers @ $12 a month = $10,200,000 of revenue.

Losing 15% of customers allows them to cut costs. So higher revenue and lower costs makes AOL more profitable.

A price hike will essentially shake the loose nuts off the branches, making the company's future more stable.

"makes $2 billion a year"

Assuming "makes", in "makes $2 billion a year", they're actually talking about earnings / profits, and not total revenue.

Assuming they WERE talking total revenue, that'd be over 16,666,667 dial-up accounts they'd still have. It'd be even higher than this, suspecting the figures are actually earnings / profits (which it probably is).

Almost 17M (more than likely, much more) dial-up customers still use AOL? Why are we still conducting expensive studies and tests on broadband penetration figures for this country? We could simply be focusing on this ONE figure here, alone!

I know, that out of a total population of just over 300M... 17M is peanuts; however, once you factor in other probabilities (metropolitan areas account for nearly 65% of our total population, not everybody on dial-up uses AOL, etc.)... that number begins to tell a saddened story about our current broadband coverage.

Yeah, unfortunately there are some people who still have to use dial-up. The thing that really sucks for them is web pages have increased in size as broadband expands. When I was between DSL service and had to use dial-up I really noticed this difference. I pretty much had to disable images to make it bearable.

Some dial-up users don't rely on it exclusively. Though I have cable Internet, I maintain a dial-up account as back-up.

The dial-up provider I have is dialup.cc, the cheapest rate I've seen so far for unlimited use.

My cable Internet doesn't usually go down, though there have been times when my cable went out and I needed the Internet SO bad that I was willing to both use dial-up at the painful glacier-slow speed and lose the ability to talk.

I'm glad however that I don't need to rely on dial-up exclusively. If I did I'd get a Line 2, which would be basic + CID + Call Forward on Busy. It's for this reason that dial-up really isn't cheaper, because of the dedicated line that's needed. If you can get DSL, then you are NUTS not to get it. The slowest DSL is cheaper than dial-up + Line-2.

Cheapest DSL:
DSL over Line 1: $15-$20

Dial-up:
Dial-up account: $5-$10
Line-2, Basic + 1 or 2 features: $20-$30
------------------------------------------
Total: $25-$40

AOL what a joke. AOL is a virus and they should be put in federal prison for installing viruses on people's computers. AOL is scam, and anyone who mention AOL should be banned from this forum, what a joke AOL is, make me laugh. AOL is so much of a joke, that if a family member of mine that I'm real close to die, I would bust out laughing if the AOL vans happen to drive by, that how much of a joke AOL is. Can this be the precursor to Merger?

There has been a little rumor floating around work and this is how it goes...

Post the Beijing Olympics NBC Universal + TimeWarner are suppose to Merge.

And then we found this:

TimeWarner is already looking to shed it's Cable business and slowly killing AOL. Can it be that TimeWarner is readying itself to take over NBCU and join the GE Family, or NBCU+TimeWarner a GE Company.

Whichever way it goes.

You have 3 really good names on the line (or may 4) Time + Warner + NBC + Universal.

NBC TimeWarner Universal... Universal TimeWarner NBC... whichever way it goes... the NBC Name can't disappear.

Re: Can this be the precursor to Merger?

My thoughts on a TWX-NBCU merger would be that for one thing, Universal Studios would probably be disposed of to some buyer- no point in having both Warner Bros. and Universal in one company (and I believe Warner is larger, though I'm not sure). I think TWX buying NBCU from GE makes far more sense than the other way- The GE conglomerate is coming under pressure from investors for being too diverse, and the media side is often targeted as an asset for divestment.

An NBCU-TWX combination makes sense on some levels, but in other places there are problems- for just one example Time Warner's executives have stated that while they'd like a broadcast network, they're not too interested in owning broadcast television stations (and for further proof of this, look how the old WB or the current CW is set up- TWX owns no affiliated stations). And yet, on the other hand, in the current situation it'd likely be difficult to find buyers for NBC's O&O stations group without massively discounting the price.

I like "NBC Time Warner" for the merged name, but it has the problem that it's very similar to "AOL Time Warner"... If they don't sell off or kill off Universal, that could add some interesting names ("Time Universal" sounds rather neat)

Re: Can this be the precursor to Merger?

actually... NBCU Has put most of its owned and operated stations on the selling block.

They won't get rid of WNBC Flagship in NYC but they're slowly vacating KNBC and moving everything down to Universal City.

In reality, most NBC Stations now a days are no more than affiliates. Which goes in-line with not owning stations, but rather selling a "product."

Well they'll figure it out one way or another. As long as I get paid every other Friday; they can call the company UniTimeNBCWarnerBravoTelemundoSciFiUSANetChillerMun2SleuthYoMamma or Whatchamacallit hahahah.
