Popular site offers plenty, for free...
(old news - 07:04PM Tuesday Jul 01 2003)
tags: fun · Video
While major studio backed broadband movie websites battle for brand recognition (and crush any upstarts in the process), heavytv.ca continues to offer free content (did we mention it was free?). Noticed by one user in our Cool Broadband Bookmarks forum quite some time ago, HeavyTV offers a regularly rotating crop of films, as well as news, music, videos, and assorted other goodies. While the quality of some of the films during broadband rush hour won't be winning awards any time soon, free is a very difficult price point to argue with.

In an era where plenty of mediocre content is being walled off and presented with a monthly fee, it's always impressive to find such a haven of bandwidth eating goodness. This thread is constantly being updated with viewing tips and news on the latest film releases to the site.

Great site! Is it legal?

I saw Vin Deisel in XXX on heavytv.ca and it was great.

However, I wonder if there are legal repurcussions to this site.

Although I can't confirm, I would bet a dollar to a donut that this site will be closed down within the next month or so. There's no way they could license those videos/movies and give them away for free. Not to mention the bandwidth costs. I bet the MPAA and RIAA will send them a cease and desist letter soon enough.

Wrong. They have been up for over three years now. They pay for putting them up. The money comes from donations of the users..they have a fund drive every year and recieve enough to keep them going. Totally legal. Thousands donate each year from around the world.

There are many other sites that take donations from users that keep sites going. Some of them offer content that isn't legal. That doesn't answer my question on if it is legal or not. I have to agree with MrTangent that is seems pretty illegal. However, I can't confirm.

Re: Great site! Is it legal?

Go on the site..write an email to wendy. The email address is in there as well as their real regular address. She will send you an explanation of the costs, legality, ect. A mod here did this over a year ago and posted the letter and responce becouse he/she was concerned about the thread being up, checked it out with other people.. and It turned out to be totally upfront and is TOTALLY legal. That is why the thread was stickied in the forum and allowed to go on.The site has been Up for over three years now and counting..They pay the studios. The website comes out of Canada.

I suppose you could be right. I don't know anything about the site or its longevity. It just seems like it'd be extremely hard, especially in light of how militant the MPAA and RIAA have been recently, for a site such as this one to operate as it has. But you seem to have more knowledge than I have on the subject so I'm willing to accept that I could very well be wrong. I hope it keeps going, because it seems like a fantastic site (although I admit the Real Video turned me off quite a bit as I prefer mpeg or mov files). I wish them the best luck, however.

Only one slight problem...

Its a free site and all, but I noticed that during some movies it will pop up a message stating the video parameters are being adjusted and the play mode changes from EP tO and vice versa... Annoying but doable.

Interesting movies as well.

24 Hours in London is pretty decent... Even heard a word coined around by myself with friends in the movie...

Add a four letter word in front of the word wit and you have it.

to bad real player is junk.

Might be cool, but the few movies they have are RP only. Havent had that POS installed on a PC in quite some time, and wont just for their service either.

Re: to bad real player is junk.

Wooo..my thread made it to front page.

HYP..there are alternative players you can use if you dont like real to play the movies. The info is in that thread. I have no problems with real at all so never tried them. There are also VERY easy ways to disable reals phoning home and modify it(thats a whole nother thread), just like disabling WMP.

The movies have always played great here on my end and it seems like the same for the majority that have been using the site for over a year now.
Best of all..ITS FREE. No catch at all..its pretty amazing in this day an age when you have to pay for most content.

The movies constantly change HYP..usually new releases every saturday.

Try JetAudio (and video) I don't have RP installed and I listen to Real streams and watch movies on Heavy TV. It's a good program.

I noticed that too. The quality is awfully low. The should push the quality up, but of course its free so you can't complain.

On a positive note though, they aren't using those crappy Windows Media file formats.
