Individual registration begins on February 3

The New York Times Bits Blog reports that as of tomorrow, companies and organizations can register web addresses with the new top-level domain of ".tel." According to the Times, the new domain stores and encrypts contact information directly into the Domain Name System, creating a central repository for contact data. At the moment only businesses can register for $400/year; individuals need to wait until the "Landrush" on February 3 of next year (when they can pay $150/year), or the general sale ($20/year) on March 24. Telnic, the main registrar for these domains, has set up a .tel simulator to help give you a better idea of how this works.

Seems like a nice product. A nice database for solicitors too.

It's $20 a year I don't need to spend though. So I don't think I'll be signing up.

Re: ...

Looks like they have made some provisions for Privacy. But this looks like it could become prime targets for hacking peoples personal info included in the domain record.

Businesses yes, others why?

I can see why businesses would want this, but I'm not placing all my personal info out there in ANOTHER random location and hope their security holds.

I am not sure why anyone would want to use this, business or otherwise. I am still trying to understand what benefit this offers.

It's a big phonebook of sorts, with much more info. If they can get people to participate it will become a common info network. An expansion to social networks.

"See my info on .tel" with a link. And the onwers make millions.

I suppose, although simply saying "my contact info is as follows" isnt too hard! I am not sure why I would need to make someone click a link if I wanted to share that information.

And I'd not do that with a vCard, why?

Why would any business, other than directory service providers, want this? Every business I've worked for has fairly aggressively guarded their internal phone (etc.) lists. Even those that want to put their data online, would do so with a private LDAp rather than something potentially available to every spammer, cold-calling salesman, cherry-picking recruiter, etc.

I meant more as a replacement for Yellow Pages. So it would just hold their general info. Definitely not their internal info for all the reasons you stated.

Google's free and far more likely to turn up an answer that someone's looking for. If you already have a corporate presence, you likely also have a "Contact Us" page on it. So, overall, unless you're trying to sell domains in this TLD, it seems rather pointless.

WTF?

At first I thought it was actually sort of a hosted dns product coupled with a new TLD. So, yourcompany.tel could be queried for records similar to SRV or TXT DNS records to pull out info like phone, website, fax etc.

This would have been mildly useful if it became a standard...but we already have e.164 for that.

This is much more useless than what I was hoping for. It's just another TLD...and god knows we have enough to the point where it's now getting silly. I think we crossed that line when .museum and .aero were approved.

...and along with the TLD you get a simple website where you can list your contact info for others to find.

They seem to have glossed over the fact that people can do that on their "regular" websites using any other TLD.

What really cracks me up is their demo where they show a business listing their web address on their .tel site so "customers can easily find your website". If customers can find your .tel site...why can't they find your .com or .cn or whatever?

Aside from large corporations reserving names to prevent trademark squatters, this is pretty useless for just about everyone.

ICANN should stop with this non-sense.

Has anyone actually seen a website that uses either of these TLDs? How about .coop? I sure haven't.

seems ok

this is what it is: if your contacts are in the "cloud", then when you update your home address/whatever as time passes, everyone who has linked to that .tel address will automatically get the update. if it's built into cell phones, they'll never have to update their number for you (barring some glitch).

good - you don't have to do much when you move/change phone numbers/get married.

bad - once someone gets that link to you, i don't see a way to exclude them from the updates - hello life-long stalking.

good for businesses and people who don't make enemies (and people whose friends don't share their contact info haphazardly).

Lame.

The only real usefulness might be for SEO purposes - but even that is doubtful...
