| Google makes MAJOR changes to their search engine
»www.techcrunch.com/2008/11/21/go···t-broke/
The changes Google made to search today certainly make it more interactive and social. I can now write comments on search results, and read comments from everyone about TechCrunch (or anything else - see the awesomely useful TechCrunch comments in the image below, along with my votes on each) and vote them up or down. I can move search results around on the page - up, down, or off the page entirely. I can also add other URLs into search results.
In fact. Google paid Wikia Search the highest compliment possible today. They copied most of their features.
In their blog post, Google says they've created a way to customize search results, and share (via the comments). They say they are striving to improve the search experience, and giving people tools to make search even more useful to them in their daily lives.
But Google search wasn't broken. It's one of the few things on the Internet that isn't. I love it, as does 62% of everyone on the Internet. This new stuff is a mess of arrows and troll comments and stuff moving around the page. That doesn't make my search experience more useful. It makes it move to another search engine.
The worst part of the new stuff is you can't turn it off. Once you click "Yes, continue" you're in. And as far as I can tell, you can't get back to the good old Google that worked just fine.
Google, I'm begging. Please pull a Lively and get rid of this thing fast. Has anybody taken the plunge and accepted using Google Search the NEW way. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page Ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya punk?

| Re: Google makes MAJOR changes to their search engine said by Matt :I didn't even get an choice, the options are just ... there. You only get a dialog(Yes or No) AFTER you choose one of the new buttons. Everyone will see the new buttons, but when you then proceed to make a comment or add a URL or use some of the new functionality will you be locked in to the new system. See this link for an explanation: »www.pcmag.com/slideshow_viewer/0···2,00.asp
P.S.> If you use Google Search without logging in as a Google user for anything else(ex. Gmail or Reader, etc), then you can still use the old Google search, even if you used the new features. But that would get to be a pain, logging out and logging back in repeatedly so you could use Gmail, but not be locked in to the new search methods.
If you use Google Search w/o logging in to any Google product needing a userid, then it looks the old way:

And what it looks like when you are logged in to Google and it has the new options as little icons:

Last Thursday Google launched a new feature called SearchWiki and well, it sucked. in my opinion. They turned a perfect clear-purpose product into a noisy icon-dessert which you can’t easily opt out . I look at Google like 10.000 times a day, i don’t have time for noise, on the other hand, as an SEO manager I’m part of the GoogleEconomy, so i can’t just logout of the Google products or disable this feature completely. So basically i coded a tiny firefox greasemonkey enhancement called “searchwiki on/off“ which lets you turn Google SearchWiki on if you need it (with this enhancement searchwiki is opt-in, means searchwiki is disabled by default.) Installation SearchWiki on/off: 1. First you need the great Greasemonkey Firefox add-on. 2. Then just install the Search Wiki On/Off User Script with one-click. 3. Test it

| [Funny] Idiot Blunder of the Week - Beer & Laptop
This will be a great laugh for some of you. I'm laughing, so it's fine.
First time in history where my company no longer sends printed paper to my house regarding medical benefit enrollment for the next year. This year, it's online. Sweet.
So, I'm here on my laptop, eagerly reviewing and reading the selections, the costs, and so forth. It's due on Sunday, so I figured let me do it Thursday night so if I have questions, I can get them answered on Friday at work.
I pop open a Corona. Being that I'm right handed and need the mouse for the right hand, I usually put drinks to the left of my laptop. For some reason, not this day. My right arm hits the Corona bottle (the first and last one I had here ), and 1/2 of it spills onto the laptop keyboard. Enough to where there is beer pooling on top of the keyboard. Sensing this was bad, I powered down the PC as fast as possible, yanked the AC cord, and took out the battery. Ran to the kitchen to get a papertowel, and dabbed what I could.
By this time, beer had started to seep in between the keys. So, in some most unwise judgement, I ran to the bathroom to get the hairdrier. Threw the sucker on high, pointed it at the keyboard about 3" above the keys, and turned my head for 2 seconds. I look back, and I melted the TAB, CAPS LOCK, Q, A, Z, and part of the S key.
Oddly enough, after the plastic stopped melting, everything works except the spacebar. Hopped on ebay for a new keyboard ($20) for this 4 year old laptop. Here I am now, with a full-size USB keyboard plugged into the laptop.
And that is the Darwin of the week award, which goes to yours truly.

| Blackberry Storm popular at Verizon stores
»news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20081121/bs_···ry_storm
Hundreds of people lined up at Verizon Wireless stores on Friday to buy the BlackBerry Storm, the first touch-screen phone from Research In Motion that aims to compete with Apple's iPhone.
More than 200 people had waited at a Verizon store in mid-town Manhattan early in the morning, many of whom were turned away after it ran out of the new phones less than an hour after opening at 8 a.m. The angry customers caused a ruckus and police came to restore order.
A Verizon employee at the store told customers that if they ordered the phone online or in the store, they would get the gadget in five to seven days.
Both the Storm and iPhone cost $200 for customers who agree to a two-year service contract and both come with a built-in camera, and music and video players.
Verizon said it was getting reports of queues elsewhere in the country, with more than 100 people lining up outside a store in Bridgewater, New Jersey and another on L Street in Washington, DC. Spokeswoman Brenda Raney said it was too soon to say if stores were selling out. News video on the story: »cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/player/···src=news
Now this guy thinks Apple should be scared that RIM will start eating the iphone's lunch. I am sure the Apple faithful will heartily disagree. »news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-10105263-17.html
Say what you will, but Apple is scared. And it should be.
But perhaps the real reason why Apple should be scared of RIM is not because RIM is changing the way cell phones are made, or altering the dynamics of the industry. Apple should be scared because of its own shortcomings with the iPhone 3G.
Consider this: the BlackBerry Storm offers cut-and-paste (duh!) functionality, its touch screen provides tactile feedback, it works as a tethered modem (a major plus for businesses), allows for expandable memory, boasts video recording, and the battery is removable. The list goes on, but I think that grouping proves the point well: the iPhone 3G is not as capable as we may think.
Say what you will about RIM, but the fact that the Storm's battery is removable, and it can be used as a tethered modem, is enough to justify companies picking them up for employees. And with the help of a touch screen and all the goodies consumers enjoy in the iPhone 3G, the Storm is an attractive choice for teenagers, college students, and even stay-at-home parents.
The iPhone was cool, up until yesterday. But today, there's a new phone in town, and if you ask me, it just took the title. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page Ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya punk?

I live on the Jersey shore 3 blocks from the beach by the way I don't mean to be a pain in the ass, but in trying to help you, I will become one:
You said the following:
quote: How does a 31 year old make new friends?
quote: I actually have too many hobbies. Problem is they are all pretty much guy dominated. I play ice hockey, I surf, I bodyboard, scuba dive, have a motorcycle, Snowboard in the winter. Always taking my dog to the dog park as well.
Not many women do that stuff.
quote: I think the only reason I am able to keep playing with all my hobbies is because I choose to be single.
Originally, I wasn't sure if you were a single guy upset about your guy friends getting married, and thus "losing" friends. (You don't lose true friends, regardless of their relationship status.) Then, as I read, it appears you want a female relationship. Not female companionship, because you have that. But with what you have there, it seems you're not satisfied for whatever reason.
Then I read that you choose to be single. The best advice I can give you if you want a female relationship - and also a friend - is to try and begin to make different choices. It's really as simple as that. With all of those hobbies I don't expect a confidence problem; perhaps you need an attitude adjustment?
Don't expect immediate results, but results will happen. -- "Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy." - George Carlin

I guess I can be considered a "player" I hate that term by the way. I actually do enjoy the whole game of meeting, attracting, and going home with, or exchanging numbers to get together for a proper date. Yes I do enjoy playing the field per se. I am picky about who I get serious with and am not oppesed to a GF, I just don't really want to settle on someone who doesn't "click" almost 100%. I am not ready to settle down with someone as quickly as a lot of people do. It seems like most people forgot how to date. They go from meeting someone to going out once or twice, to gf and bf.
Theres a lot of times I know about 10 minutes into a date that it wont work out, but sometimes it takes a month or so of dating to realize the woman isnt exactly going to work out. It doesn't mean I don't ejoy the time spent with the person, it just means I don't see myself getting serious with them.
I guess I say my friends suck because they arent out with me picking up women. I am not jealous of them though. Although I am sure I will want a wife or steady GF eventually, right now thats not something I am interested in. If and when I find that person, I will be more then happy to be exclusive with her. I have noticed a lot of people are out there really in search of a companion. I figure I am better off dating and meeting new women until I find the one I click with. The more I increase the amount of women I meet the more chances of meeting the right one.

| Military Looking Abroad for Source of Cyber Attack on Pentag »www.foxnews.com/politics/2008/11···e-china/
The cyber attack on the Department of Defense that has led to a ban on the use of external hardware devices could have come from a number of foreign countries, possibly Russia, though the military is dismissing earlier reports that China was the source of the threat.
FOX News learned that a Navy rear admiral outside the Pentagon, in a briefing to his staff on Thursday, characterized the virus as a coordinated attack that was strategically timed to hit between the Nov. 4 presidential election and Inauguration Day, Jan. 20.
He described how a service member with access to classified information inadvertently loaded the virus onto his computer via a flash drive. As a result, he no longer knows where the computer's sensitive information is being stored.
The cyber attack so alarmed the Pentagon that it took the unprecedented step of banning the use of external hardware devices, such as flash drives and recordable CDs and DVDs.
The attack came in the form of a global virus or worm that is spreading rapidly throughout a number of military networks.

File for Ch 11 restructuring. Sell assets, cut costs. Trim the workforce. Drop unprofitable business. In a few short years, it can make a world of difference.
I know because I work for a company that in 1999 went into Ch 11 restructuring for bankruptcy protection. We're now a $2.1 billion company with a generous operating income, and have been for a few years.
Granted, we're not on the size or scale of GM, nor are we unionized, but the principle remains the same. Trim the fat, scale back. -- "Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy." - George Carlin

| Re: what do you guys think about the big 3 bailout? said by Jeffrey :File for Ch 11 restructuring. Sell assets, cut costs. Trim the workforce. Drop unprofitable business. In a few short years, it can make a world of difference. There's never any guarantee that a company will emerge from restructuring. It could liquidate. Bought by a competitor.
This raises a substantial problem. Nobody in their right mind would buy a vehicle from a company facing such an unknown future. People want to know their local dealership will be there to service the car. They want to know they can buy parts five years from now. That their warranty will be honored.
I've heard suggestions that the government can give tax credits to those who buy a car under such a circumstance. But, that's essentially a "bailout." Maybe a better one, but still a handout above what the market would yield.
So, either way, it's not as simple as just filing Ch. 11.
The really amazing thing is that even 3 weeks ago, GM was planning to invest $2 bill on its largest SUVs. Just 3 weeks ago! GM's CEO says they've responded aggressively to the changing market. But, just 2 weeks prior to appearing before congress, he was going to drop $2 bill on the largest SUVs (a *year* after gasoline went to $170 a barrel, and only *after* it dropped back to $60 a barrel).
I know people love to focus on over-paid blue-collar workers. But, holy cow.
