Beta tests being conducted for functionality upgrade...

Light Reading offers another look at the upcoming functionality additions Verizon has planned for FiOS TV, including the ability to watch videos from YouTube and Blip.tv. The report notes that from what Verizon has demonstrated so far, it's adding this functionality "without putting up a walled garden to restrict what kinds of YouTube videos are available to watch." The piece also asks Verizon about the possibility of implementing a network DVR (RS-DVR), something the telco says is of interest but so far prevented due to "legal and business" issues. In other words, they want to see if Cablevision's battle against the entertainment industry heads to the Supreme Court.

This is a natural expansion.

I've been expecting them to move into this arena. With FIOS they are more set up for this kind of stuff then cable companies or other Telcos.

Re: This is a natural expansion.

lets hope the GUI is faster than the VOD GUI...it would suck to click-wait-click-wait for 30 secs to watch a 90 sec video.

VOD loads almost instantly with the IMG 1.6 update.

Yes, the 1.6 IMG update fixes the VOD lag. 1.6 changed the way the STB caches the VOD assets, so browsing in VOD doesn't require a constant request from the VOD server. Once you order a VOD, only then is a request sent upstream to the VOD server....

Me too. Even the installer was impressed with how quick it was. (Just had it installed on Saturday)

Makes sense

FiOS TV's VOD isn't as good as the services provided by cable companies, by using YouTube and other online video services they greatly increase the amount of content they can use at minimal cost (well, I don't know how exactly the deal with Google will work), and their boxes are already IP-enabled...

Re: Makes sense

That's what I thought too, but I haven't found it deficient in any way, and I actually like their menu's better as well. Fewer click to get where I want, and better response.
