Despite Verizon and T-Mobile faring better in call quality and customer satisfaction surveys, 30% of current 3G iPhone users made the switch from other carriers to AT&T from June to August, according to new data from the NPD Group. By comparison, 23% of wireless customers changed carriers during that same time frame. Nearly half of new AT&T iPhone customers switched from Verizon Wireless, another 24 percent switched from T-Mobile, and 19 percent switched from Sprint. iPhone smartphone share jumped from 11% to 17% of the market with the 3G's launch.

No, they have a large selection of phones. Just not the iPhone, which has become a fashion statement by those who have to have the "IN Thing" like all their friends.

They can't do that to PDA style phones. On those they disable GPS so you have to use their product, but that's it.

Exactly. My buddy left Verizon for AT&T and even he admits their service is awful, but he loves the iPhone so he is willing to put up with it. He wanted to throw his iPhone at AT&T when I told him Verizon was getting the iPhone and his current one won't work with them ... so he'd have to buy a new one if he wanted to switch back.

Who else completely hates the 'red' interface. It's somewhat nice not having to relearn menus when you upgrade phones, but jeeze there is so much work that needs to be done on that sad platform..

There are quite a few phones being offered by Verizon's partners, it's just that they might as well all be the same model since the software all comes with the same feature killing locks in place..

It comes and goes. Sometimes my "New Every Two" goes three years because they don't have any phones that I like. About my phone... 10 reasons why the Samsung i760 is better than the iPhone for business users.

AT&T's wireless network comes and goes as well. I tested AT&T Mobility just about a month ago. It's "just okay" to "spotty" here in Portland. VZW is much superior here.

Having Verizon Wireless is like having an ugly girlfriend who is always dependable but never does the back room stuff you want her to do.

Having sprint is like messing with a sexy model who to be honest... wont always be there for you..... but when she is..... god damn she will do anything and everything you want.

Having ATT "I-Phone" is like have a beautiful, smart and sophisticated woman but is stuck up like you cant believe and wants everyone to know it. She will do some of the back room stuff but is very prissy about it....

Personally I would suggest having Verizon for business and Sprint or ATT on the side but thats just me ....

How many

Would dump AT&T if the iPhone became available by another carrier ?

While I don't care one way or the other for the iPhone, with the exception of its interface, as it lacks many necessary features for my use. AT&T's 3G network just blows chunks, and the forced $30/month for data is too steep (should alow for a WiFi only option for light users).

Too many dropped calls on AT&T's 3G is what's keeping me from ever wanting to purchase a $200 device with +$60/month voice+data plan.

I'll wait for AT&T to deploy a 2nd piece of 3G spectrum (currently has only 5MHz deployed in Los Angeles area on 1900MHz vs. 17.5MHz of GSM/EDGE)

Not that it's scientific or anything, but all of my friends who left Verizon for AT&T and the iPhone are disappointed.

They all have said the coverage isn't as good, the pricing is too steep, and given the choice, they would have stuck with their old carrier.

Re: How many

In the end, I think it all comes down to where you live. I switched from Verizon to AT&T specifically for the iPhone. So far, AT&T's coverage here in CT is FAR superior to the coverage that Verizon offered me for about 8 years. The call quality is also as good if not better than what I got with Verizon. I'm not sure how you can say it's more expensive than Verizon though... on average, Verizon's plans and features cost roughly 20-40% more than what AT&T charges. I'm able to get 450 anytime minutes & 5000 N/W minutes, unlimited data and unlimited TXT with AT&T for about $90/month -- the same thing with Verizon would cost around $110 to $115/month.

Re: How many

That's interesting.
Currently with the "V" I get the same things you listed above as well as VZ navigation, ESPN's MVP for $79.00 a month.

Granted, it's where you live. ATT's 3G service here is poor. I know, have an LG Vu as well. Very poor 3G reception unless I'm in downtown SLO. Too bad too, ATT's TV side is awsome! Great reception, decent offerings.

I totally agree, I never had dropped calls as much as I do now with an iPhone. The phone itself is cool, but should have stuck with my treo 755p on sprints network. Maybe if the android lives up to the hype I will pay the etf and jump ship.

According to AT&T (like I believe them), a second 5MHz of spectrum is to be deployed in many areas. It is MORE than needed in many urban/suburban areas.
Voice + data on 17.5MHz of spectrum = Ok
Voice + data on 5MHz of spectrum = bad news

This seems like BS to me - they had 30 days to test out the iphone and could have gone back to verizon or overlapped service time. If they really thought it sucked that bad, they could have gotten out of the att contract and went back to verizon or never cancelled verizon.

Re: How many

According to the store rep, you only have 14 days to return the iPhone. And even then there is a 10% restock fee. However, a quick look at AT&T's site says the same 30 day trial policy applies to the iPhone but there is still a 10% restock fee.

I switched from VZW to AT&T for the iPhone. I regretted the decision from the moment I ported my number. So, why didn't I switch back? Well, for all it's shortcomings the iPhone is still pretty cool. Silly reason? Yeah, but here's the other thing.

Right now I think the iPhone is still one of the best phones currently on the market. And I've been with VZW for 10 years, but VZW doesn't have the it factor with any of their phones. Storm might change that, but it's not out yet.

But here's the other thing. VZW has already announced that they will be going with LTE for the 4G network. As far as I know there are no current phones in VZW (or anyone else's) that will work on LTE right now. So, no matter what in a couple of years if you want to take advantage of LTE you'll need to get a new phone. So, in the meantime I might was well play with the iPhone and then see what VZW has to offer by 2010.

Pre-cisely!

Going back to when they were Bell Atlantic Mobile, VZW has been stressing (in their ads) the network behind the phones. Meanwhile, what is AT&T Mobility primarily stressing in their ads? Surprisingly, not their domestic coverage, but their overseas coverage (all of which requires roaming, and paying roaming charges). For most cell phone users (even those that travel), unless you travel overseas greater than fifty percent of the time, overseas coverage means diddly-squit. It's domestic coverage (especially without paying roaming fees) that is of primary importance. Cool features on a phone are only important if I can (or will) use them; otherwise, they are largely pointless.

Yay for being a statistic

I was one of the 50% who moved from verizon to ATT for the iphone. I wish verizon was able to work out a deal with the iphone because their network is better then ATT coverage wise. Maybe at some point later there will be some reason to switch, but I happily enjoy my iphone either way.

Yes, those stats, the percentage of total number of existing users that migrated from one service to another would seem relevant. Verizon has many more customers than Sprint, so it would seem expected that they would have a larger percentage involved in the iPhone switch. I would be curious to know how much of an impact that Sprint's availability of the Samsung Instinct might have reduced their users from jumping ship?

Re: Percentages

That's true, I think Sprint did a fairly good job of marketing the Samsung Instinct as if it was a real iPhone competitor. When the original iPhone came out VZW did a similar heavy marketing campaign for the LG Voyager, but their attempts to use the LG Dare this time around didn't seem as aggressive.

Penny wise and pound foolish?

I switched 3 lines from VZW to AT&T just to get the iPhone 3G. I was a VZW customer for at least 10 years. When they phoned me to ask why I switched and was there anything they could do to get me back, I said "Yeah, carry the iPhone.". They muttered something about Apple wanting too much control so it wasn't likely they'd carry it. I guess that extra bit of control is more valuable to them than the substantial subscriber losses they're suffering because they chose not to carry it. Tough business decision for sure. Hope it works out for them.

Yeah, like Verizon doesn't try to control and cripple the phones they already have.

Verizon had their chance and they said screw it and now they are paying for it. I had Verizon for many years until they made a mistake and REFUSED to correct it without extending my contract another 2 years. When I told them I was leaving, they said go ahead. Haven't looked back since.

Yeah, iPhone owners should be glad its not on the Verizon network due to them crippling everything. That's why Verizon is not even a consideration for me when my phone contract is up in 4-5 months with Sprint.

I believe it.

I have been a 'Verizon' wireless customer from wireless' beginnings with GTE. Ups and downs, but consistently excellent coverage everywhere in the US. I also admire the iPhone, but do not find AT&T wireless useable where I live, or when on business away from major cities. I ended up with an iPod Touch, which very much demonstrates to me how useful the Apple design (minus phone) really is.

I would buy the iPhone if the network had the coverage and clarity of Verizon wireless.

Out of curiosity, what density of GSM tower coverage in "Europe"/Japan etc. versus US GSM?

Re: I believe it.

That's an easy question. Europe has GREAT coverage. Check out t-mobile's web site and look under international coverage. They're everywhere. And they have the cheapest coverage vs ATT. For an example, Tiblisi,Georgia(country, NOT U.S.state) $2.99 per min. t-mobile: $4.99 Min. ATT.
Japan uses 2100Mhz frequencies-need a cell phone to handle that-and the iPhone does..I think.
My 2 cents...

I agree.. I had great service on AT&T GSM for years.
As soon as my phone started displaying '3G' was when the trouble started. GSM works well, 3G capacity isn't up to par (yet).
I had Verizon Wireless in the past, and they pi$$ed me off with their internal BS and billing (attempted to keep billing me AFTER I cancelled service, and even attempted to send collections after me A call to the BBB fixed it, but I'll take Nextel over them)

Smirk

When I moved to Central Florida I decided to switch to Verizon because Sprint did not deliver a signal to my new home. At that time I wondered if I should have chosen AT&T. I got an answer last week when I took a drive with a friend who just purchased an iPhone. The told me the iPhone was the best thing since sliced bread. I was give an opportunity to smirk when my friend was unable to get a signal on their iPhone several times during our drive. I had to let them use my Verizon phone in order to make several urgent telephone calls. My only complaint is that Verizon nickels and dimes their customers to death and charge for features that are provided as standard by other carriers.

YuppyWireless

@sigmanet.com

No wonder there are so many network related complaints......

I look at this from another perspective. You know how there are so many reception related complaints with the iPhone and at&t's 3G network? That's partly due to ex Verizon customers who were 'used to," a much more reliable/stable network to begin with.

When you go from something better to something sub par, you are much more likely to vent as opposed to the other way around.

iphone

I wanted SO BADLY to hate the iphone and all the hype. Work keeps us on ATT here so over the years I've had the blackjack, blackjack 2, Q, and the Tilt (for a week). When iphone came out I said no keyboard? no exchange support? what a joke.

Anyhow along comes iphone 3g...and more importantly 2.0 software (exchange) and I won't look back. I had to get into my blackjack 2 the other day to pull some old files off and couldn't believe I ever used it, it's like looking at something from the 70's.

3g sucks on iphone, and from my use it IS mildly worse than was on my other phones. Non-issue as I turned it off for reliability and to save battery just like I did on all my other phones and to avoid any handover issues. I do wish att would get their 3g up to snuff, but I find I rarely use data (other than email) where I'm not around wifi.

Anyhow the thing is amazing. Do I wish I could swap batteries? yes. Do I wish it had a keyboard? surprisingly, no. I type 20-30 emails on it per day and probably 100-150 texts per day and I can confidently say I am just as fast as I was on any of the other smartphones.

Re: iphone

iPhone has native exchange support unlike blackberries which use a warped patched together of outlook web access.

I never have problems with 3G in the pittsburgh area.... ohio on the other hand it sucks.

I'm not sure how you could swap a battery on this though and keep it so small.

I hated the virtual keyboard at first, then it grew on me a bit.
