I'v never used the widgets because I have my own weather station in my back yard, and because my computer is never more than a few feet from me, in fact I see them as kinda annoying being that I accidentally press the widget button when I actually wanted favorites

| Re: Direct Tv has media share and interactivity said by as2higpark :doesnt DirecTV charge a fee to buy the box, For the first 4 SD receivers or the first DVR or HD receiver, no, if you go directly through DirecTV. Going through a retailer maybe. If you want a HD DVR, it's currently $99.
then another monthly fee for DVR service? $5.99/month.
...that is better? Not IMO It's an apples to oranges comparison as they don't have identical fee structures, but no matter what you are still paying for fruit. After 2 years, DirecTV's initial "investment" is recouped and the per month cost is less then Verizon for a single HD DVR. Plus you own it so there is some equity there that Verizon doesn't have.

| Re: Too high a cost except for early adopter gadget freaks I agree. With the economy in a tailspin dive, many will not be going out of their way to purchase remote control items / widgets for their TV. | Come on Comcast These are the little "tip of the iceburg" add ons that differentiate the provider from the competition. Now why doesn't cable giants such as Comcast take this opportunity to deploy similar and better features/guide interface, WITHOUT charging extra for the bonus features. That would make a difference in choosing sides. | |

It's a nice value-add but there's no way in hell I'd pay for that crap.

| wild guess on 4.99 charge I believe the additional charge is to enable the multiroom and media manager features on dvrs that are not currently subscribed. Hence the additional charge is not an extra or new fee. Customers who already have the multiroom dvr which comes with media manager may not have to pay anything else. Only customers who have dvr without the multiroom feature will have to upgrade and it will cost $5 more. For example, existing standard def multiroom dvr is $17.99 per month. Existing standard def dvr is 12.99. Therefore $12.99+$5=$17.99 which is what existing standard def multiroom dvr customers pay now. For HD, regular HD/DVR is $15.99, multiroom HD/DVR is $19.99. Whether the price will remain $19.99 or is going up to $20.99 has yet to be seen. But basically I think current multiroom customers should be getting the new features at no extra charge. Just my guess based upon stuff I've heard from vz employees | |

| What About Internet-To-TV Streaming?
Gear Log mentions "the ability to digest endless You Tube videos". I might be wrong, but it doesn't seem to be the same as watching an episode of Lost from the ABC website, Star Trek from the CBS website, a movie from Hulu, or any content from the growing number of websites that offer steaming video (AOL, IMDB, Netflix, Fox, and many others), on any TV we have connected to FIOS.
There are gadgets that supposedly can bring the internet into our living rooms, but they may not work with FIOS. So, does it look like they will be offering that kind of streaming, via the Multiroom DVR and Media Manager, or must we look at possible alternatives? Mark F

| wait a minute... ...I already have these features (except for the cell phone and Facebook stuff), and I'm not paying extra for them. They were introduced about the same time as the new HD channels.
If I didn't have news and weather on my Wii and PC, I'd use the widgets a lot more. They would be great for some households.
I do use the traffic widget once and a while...it actually seems fairly accurate. -- ~BizSAR

| MultiRoom DVR + Widgets I think the providers will eventually hit a ceiling on these additional $4.99 charges for each new feature that they bring out and will have to provide them to retain customers kinda along the lines of telcos when VOIP offered feature rich packages. Personally I have MythTV on my desktop which does most of these features. I have a media mvp in each room ($60) that will allow me to view tv and/or recorded content/music/photos/weather or traffic. | |
