ISPs revert to selling your browsing data on the down low...

The writing was on the wall earlier this week when behavioral advertising firm NebuAD's CEO Bob Dykes quickly made for the exit. Now the Washington Post reports that NebuAD's plans to buy your browsing data in order to deliver you custom advertising have been "suspended." As if they had a choice with Congress investigating the privacy ramifications of their deep packet inspection technology, formerly cooperative ISPs now giving them the cold shoulder and the CEO jumping ship. It appears that NebuAD will simply revert to being a more traditional ad delivery network. Next up: someone in the media or Congress realizing that ISPs have been selling your clickstream data for years on the sly, with no opt-out process whatsoever.

Re: ...

If I recall correctly, there were wicked witches in the east and west, and good ones in the north and south. Or something like that.

This is more like, one gets melted, another comes up in a new disguise and tries to get away with the same things.

And flying monkeys for astroturfing, lobbying, and writing abusive "Terms of Service".

Ok.. so they SAY they are COOLING it. But just like when the FBI backed off from "Carnivore" when everyone got all up and arms, the NSA walked in (later), quietly installed GIGE routers at just about every LARGE TELCO switch site to direct IP traffic to some NSA data center and it made news just for how long? Just long enough for AT&T and VZ to look like the bad guys, but they still DO it, nothing changed. So.. whos to say they still wont BORROW your browser data without you even knowing it? NOTHING!!. Lessons learned. We have no rights to privacy when it comes to the internet. Never had it.. never will. Get use to it.

That's brilliant. Good thing you don't have ever to fight for something, eh. Just move along...do as you're told like a good little citizen.

Having lived in California.. I can understand your view . Just realistic. The issue is, if you FIGHT it, they never know the ways WE have figured out how to get around it. It just amazes me of the MORONS who stand up and make idle threats about taking on the "man".. Why not just blend in, hide in shadows and let them spend days trying to figure things out.. Maybe you just don't get that. It's called "counter" intelligence.

Dykes bailed, but...

He is still Chairman of the Board. Although it will remain to be seen how long that lasts.

Wow, I guess I need to retire my signature then. At least it was a good backup plan. A lot of people wrote in how much they appreciated the site (many from here), so again I extend my thanks to all of you for helping.

Oh yeah "Ha Ha" as Nelson would put it

By raising your rates.

Re: Oh nooooooossssss

As if they would hold off raising rates even if they signed up with NebuAd. They'd just try to claim that it was somehow an "Enhanced Internet Experience" and thus cause to raise rates.
