Infamous unconfirmed Steve Jobs e-mail declares so

For those of you bored stiff of iPhone stories (who can blame you), please stop reading here, and instead check out this story about the Blackberry Bold being available via AT&T by October 2. Or this one about T-Mobile offering EeePC's with embedded 3G. For those still with us, it appears that one of the iPhone's biggest shortcomings (no, not the inability to cut and paste, the inability to send MMS or the fairly mediocre 2 megapixel camera) is about to be fixed. While the iPhone now supports 3G, it originally could not be tethered and used as a modem, something that may be getting fixed shortly. So far the only evidence of this comes from one of those random, but often accurate Steve Jobs e-mails to Apple fans. Neither Apple or AT&T have confirmed the move.

Re: autocorrect

What's the point of having a 3G phone if you can't tether.
Also, paying the big $$$ for iPhone data plan on a 2 year commitment should allow this anyways.

I've tethered on my PoS Samsung ZX-20 on the $15 media max package w/o issue.

Re: autocorrect

Yeah, I'm using Netshare with fantastic results. Jailbreak is a winner. IMO

The battery life is pretty bad when you tether. But if you had a plug somewhere then it wouldn't really be a problem. It can come in handy once in a while though, that's why I bought the Netshare app when it popped back up the second time.

Re: autocorrect

That's one of the reasons why I decided to pass on NetShare even when I could buy it. A true tether should work through the USB cable or maybe bluetooth PAN. With my BlackJack, it was as simple as running the ICS application, and plugging in the USB cable.

iPhone's wifi adds a lot of latency (expected in low power mode), and it's WAY too much of a PITA to create an ad-hoc network, set a static IP, and configure my browser for a proxy, just to get online through my laptop every time I want to use it.

Re: autocorrect

I've been able to do it through AT&T Wireless connection manager on my Samsung ZX-20 throught tethered and bluetooth connections.
Maxed 1.2Mbps down, 360 kbps up. Latency was 120-240ms.

I agree, the extra money wireless providers want for tethering and "PDA plans" is complete BS and an utterly blatant cash grab.

$60/month? Are you f*cking kidding me? The extra cost of a PDA plan that's no different from MediaMax should cover it. And then some.

The point of 3G isnt to tether. Nice try though.

Terms of Service

Those of you who are bragging about getting tethering for free on your WinMo phones should check your Terms of Service and perhaps pipe down. All recent ToS say you have to buy a tethering plan to tether. A few years ago, AT&T was in sort of a don't ask, don't tell mode about tethering. Now, they have tethering plans for just about all phone except the iPhone. Just because you can do it doesn't mean you're not violating your ToS. I may not agree with AT&T's policies, but if I violate their ToS, they have the right to kick me off.

It's an excellent point, but I'm curious- are there other providers on Earth with WinMo phones whose names are NOT at&t? I'm just curious.

Re: Terms of Service

Mine has a stipulation about tethering too, but I don't care, I have turned off their ability to monitor in every way on my phone, besides the provider side looking into usage. My phone is setup to make the traffic appear to be going to the cell phone, the phone acts like a router. There is a file reference in the registry, along with some other keys too, and once they are changed, my unlimited data plan for the phone is technically all I am using. So I'm not worried. Hell, I am typing this on that phone as we speak, and my other computer is connected to the internet through a spare prepaid phone the same way. I have been running this way for over a year, and I frequently download movies using the connections. Some phones are better at masking than others. You might want to get a Mogul from Sprint, or a Verizon VX8300. The VX8300 is hackable using QPST, and the Mogul you use Resco Regedit. A simple Google search will provide you with the rest of the info you need. But you will need your MSL code, and I was able to get mine simply by asking. They didn't seem too concerned, hehe.

I'd expect him to either have a team of people who answers e-mails, or to use a computer. I doubt he reads all his emails via his iPhone and responds that way.

Just as I do the person who wrote the article isnt so sure about the iphone part

Here is an idea

Lets take all the different iphone articles and delete them, along with all the comments.

The device is fail, the company that you are forced to use it with is fail and threads about the device are fail.

Less fail, more win DSLR....

umbilical cord is twisted and have NO blood flow!!

Umm, lets see here.......frigging 3G rarely works, battery life is marginal, thru-put speeds suck and they want to spend time on tethering? Why can't at&t and Apple focus on getting the 3G working as promised and a decent battery life before "milking dry the cash cow ie:consumer". I know NOBODY forced me to buy an iPhone is it not just a silent understanding that "a phone" does some basic functions as advertised? Oh wait I was naive to believe the "kool-aid" bootle nutritional information as written by Steve Poops, oops my bad I meant Jobs.
