I use them (without their blocking features) because their CacheCheck and update features are absolutely indispensable for a DNS admin (which is part of my job).

| I use OpenDNS I use it at home to help me protect the kids from inappropriate web sites. It works well for this.
My church also uses it, for the same reason, for the school ministry.
Note: This is not the only protection, but a part of it. Parental supervision at home and random monitoring at the school also play a part. -- Atomic batteries to power - Turbines to speed - ready to move out.

| Sheesh.... It's about time someone started beating down these evil corporations -- clearly they're charging too much if they're making these obscene profits. All they're doing is DNS, they shouldn't be able to profit that much from that! Oh, and a windfall profits tax is clearly in order.

| They deserve to be compensated but... I still won't use them. I fully understand they provide a free service and that DNS redirection is probably one of their main sources of revenue. I don't like DNS redirection and try to avoid any server that uses it, but I wouldn't condemn OpenDNS for it.
I condemn ISPs because you are paying for their service. Paying for it to work properly as the protocol describes, right out of the box. Many would expect that. But let's see...DHCP give you your ISP DNS servers because DHCP did its job(by default) and now instead of getting proper errors, you get to see your ISP double dip.
This is opt out because you're opted in the moment DHCP obtains your ISP DNS servers. In OpenDNS's case, you have to manually opt-in by pointing to their servers and they still provide the standard ISP opt-out option after that.
I would still use another alternative DNS that doesn't redirect. I wonder if the name makes OpenDNS so popular. I do tend to wonder, given the number of other alternative DNS servers. I use Level3's myself. Nice clean 404 error for any app. Even those that don't use cookies.

You can use OpenDNS and still get clean 404 errors: » You can use OpenDNS without redirection to ad page ... But options like that would be tracked by cookies. Correct me if I'm wrong on that, but that would still make it an issue for various apps that debug based on the errors they receive(like by purging an address from their cache) because they will not be using cookies like a browser would.

| Re: They deserve to be compensated but... I think it is actually tracked by your IP address. I have a server at home that keeps OpenDNS up to date on whenever my dynamic IP changes, so it's not an issue for me and then I get some cool stats to look at. I still use their redirection pages because sometimes they are useful for me and I also appreciate the service. | |

It'd be nice if DNS redirection was opt-in, but whatever.

| Interesting, but I won't need them I'd rather run my own full resolver here. The only DNS server you can trust is the one you own.
And when all else fails, and I need to use another resolver, I use the king of caching nameservers - 4.2.2.1 - 4.2.2.5. I've been using that one as a fall back every since someone lost the network settings for a device and we didn't have the ISP's DNS server IPs. -- --- Over ten plus years of carrying The Clue Bat...

| good and free DNS service OpenDNS is pretty good. first, it is free. second, you have more control over the DNS setting when you apply for an account. Yeah, it sucks to pay the ISP but not using their DNS. But when there is a better and free DNS service than the ISP's one, why not use it? | |

| I use OpenDNS ...and it hasn't failed me yet. A while ago when I reinstalled XP I forgot to set my DNS servers back to OpenDNS and I logged onto the internet and of course Aliant's DNS servers must have been down again since no websites would resolve. I used my cell phone's browser to get the IP addresses for OpenDNS's servers and entered them and the internet has been fine ever since, and I find that it's a bit faster aswell. | |
