story category Video Wall at Comcast Building Draws Tourist Attention
Massive high resolution screen dominates lobby

tags: business · cable · Comcast
Comcast employees recently moved into a massive skyscraper in Philadelphia, a move designed to bring all of the company’s employees together for a more streamlined and productive business. The impressive building is also drawing the attention of customers and tourists with features such as a massive video wall which plays along the entire width of the lobby. The video wall is a 10-million-pixel high-definition screen which has five times the resolution of HDTV and thirty percent greater resolution than an IMAX film. Each of the 6500+ Barco NX-4 LED modules that make up this wall is capable of reproducing 281 trillion colors.

Great

Nice to know all those massive price increases are going to a worthy cause.

$250 million in furnishings, $22 million for a video wall...2x a year price increases do a company good.

They can afford it after the massive screwjob they pulled on the city: their relocation is tax-free for a bunch of years, even though they only moved down the street. Something about keeping jobs in the city, blah, blah, blah.

That type of stuff happens all the time. New Jersey purchased most of the equipment that MSNBC used when they launched in Secaucus, NJ in 1996, and they got a big tax break as well. So this has been happening for years.. practically everywhere.

What's the "best" thing about that "deal" is that after NJ gave MSNBC all that money to stay in Secacus, MSNBC moved to New York before the tax break period was over so NJ never got any revenue from that "deal".

You forgot throttling, starting a net-neutrality war, and HD compression that makes 1080P HD content anything but.

I love tiling all over the place on Sci-Fi because they deem that channel less equal than major league sports. We should be talking about channel neutrality with all these ridiculous sudden compression changes.

Comcast needs to get their priorities straight

They really need to stop focusing on having their HQ look all fancy and upgrade their services more.

Maybe this is their way of distracting customers to look at their new fancy video wall instead of their old overcrowded cable lines...

Re: Comcast needs to get their priorities straight

This is how big business works.
The idea of bringing all their employees into one building is a great idea. It increases communication, moral and keeps a streamlined "model" of a moving business.

As far as the big TV, to me it is the same as a big fountain or something you see in major buildings, no big deal.

A fancy HQ does improve the overall happiness of employees, or some of them anyway. Makes them feel almost proud to work for the company which in theory gives better results to the customer.

We are talking business, not a pole technicians shed.

What a massive waste

Too bad that companies that have more money than they know what to do with would waste that money on something like that.
Wouldn't that money be better spent on upgrading their sub-par customer service?

It wasn't done by Comcast. It was done by the building owner as part of government MANDATED art being part of all new office buildings in Philadelphia. Comcast merely LEASES space in the building.

Read the details here:
To comply with a 1991 city zoning code that regulates high-rise buildings, Liberty was obliged to include public art in the $495 million construction budget. The developer provided three projects - an outdoor fountain, the computer-programmed video display behind the entrance desk, and a seven-story sculptural installation by Jonathan Borofsky in the all-glass entrance atrium, which Liberty calls the Winter Garden.

More like when you're SHILLING for Comcast, the facts don't matter.

TK engaged in a bit of selective quoting.

quote:
However, in a 2006 letter to the city Art Commission, he had indicated that the company was required to spend at least $905,000, and that the fountain ($950,000) and the Borofsky sculpture ($1.6 million) would surpass that amount. The video wall was not included in the proposal, presumably because it wasn't needed to satisfy the zoning code, but perhaps also because keeping that project out of the official public-art domain allowed Liberty more flexibility in how it might be used in the future.
The Video Wall was not a gov't mandated art anything. It's was Brian "BMW" Robert's idea.

»broadcastengineering.com/news/co···es-0624/

quote:
The lobby installation was conceived by Comcast chairman and CEO Brian Roberts as a gift to the people of Philadelphia.
The $22M was paid by Comcast »dvice.com/archives/2008/06/this_···.php?p=7 as part of their 15.5 year 90% lease of the building. Comcast also paid $250M for furnishings. Roberts thought it up and like the switch from stone to glass, insisted on it's installation.

So the video wall belongs to the building owner and is leasing it to Comcast. Just like the cafeteria, offices, & bathrooms.

Re: What a massive waste

Depends on the terms of the lease and whether the wall is considered a permanent installation. It certainly doesn't have to belong to the building owner just as the cafeteria may not if it's not a "permanent installation".

Comcast and Liberty call it a "gift" to the city, so who knows what the actual terms of the lease are. The telling tale would be who pays to fix it. When you're spending $250M on desks and chairs, another $22M for a giant TV isn't beyond the wasteful capacity of Comcast.

But there is no doubt it was Comcast's creation, and it's subscriber money (at nearly $40/ft) that is paying for this glass tower for Roberts and his cronies.

My lease (of course I'm not leasing 1M sqft) wouldn't be that different. Build to suit is common, but it is I who pay for these improvements outright or negotiate it as part of the lease (so I'm still paying, but just paying over time).

Re: What a massive waste

You have a VERY strange concept of who's money it is. You imply that the "subscribers" have any say over the money because it's "their" money, as in the subscribers. Need a lesson on economics? Comcast set a price for a product, THOSE OF US who live in comcast territory, unlike SOME around here, agree to pay it. The money changes hand. The SUBSCRIBER got the service, the company keeps the money. See? easy.

Some how you think that the subscribers are entitled to how the revenue of comcast is spent after their bills are paid. ABSURD! The only say a subscriber has is to cancel their service and not be a part of the process.

This is no different than you having any say against the way an Albertsons or Safeway spends their money after you buy groceries, or how Best Buy spends their money.

If you don't like it, then move along - it's not your place to say, NOR judge! You're not even a subscriber! I think you like to bitch, just to bitch!

Re: What a massive waste

Wrong again sport. I was a customer of Comcrap between ATTB and Time Warner. I have first hand experience with their 2X a year 3X inflation price increases, nastygrams for violating their phantom caps and the ever cool 30% "how dare you not have our crap CATV" penalty.

It is the subscribers money. The subscribers pay and Comcast comes back telling them they must take increases because of this or that. Meanwhile as service gets worse and worse and prices get higher and higher, they build their ivory tower with hundreds of millions of subscriber dollars.

If Comcast and their shills want to avoid criticism, they could stop wasting hundreds of millions of subscriber dollars on bullshit and start providing decent service.

Oh, and yeah, the money I make from my business is my customers' money. In exchange for the sums they pay, they expect and get the best product and best service in my industry. And DAMN STRAIGHT if my customer service rankings were below that of the IRS, I would be putting THEIR hard paid money into improving service and quality, not a new HD screen for the lobby and fancy desk for my office.

Re: What a massive waste

There's no rules. Someone who CONSTANTLY kisses the ass of any particular business no matter what they do is a shill.

And yeah, I'm safe in saying that Comcast engaging in predatory pricing in inexcusable and Verizon stealing $2B from Pennsylvania taxpayers in inexcusable. I also say that Comcast wasting hundreds of millions on their ivory tower while their customer service sinks below that of the Internal Revenue Service is inexcusable. I say charging $7.50 for caller ID and $1.50 to stay out of the phone book, 'you didn't use enough long distance fees' and converting the USF into regulatory recover fees are all inexcusable.

The shills defend their price increases. The shills defend their horrid customer service ratings. They defend the wasting of money. They defend their draconian network management policies. Hell, they defend charging $1.50 to keep yer name out of the phone book. Meanwhile they CONSTANTLY assail competitors, no matter what good they do.

You can disagree with some of these assertions, of course. But when you CONSTANTLY side with the telcos or CONSTANTLY side with cable, or CONSTANTLY side with big business...you're a shill. No business, no industry, no government, no party, no anything is perfect however these various fanboy shills rarely if ever find faults in anything their heroes do.

They're nothing but spokesholes for their coaxial or twisted pair masters. If we wanted talking points, we can get those at corporate websites.

It would if you didn't bother to look at my post history which includes supporting civil immunity for the telcos and elimination of all corporate taxes. This is too funny

First I'm all about being an telco shill and always assailing Comcast

»Re: "He who gets the last laugh.. "

Never having a bad word to say about Verizon
»They promised PA stuff too
»Last mile will kill them
Or AT&T
»Re: Good ruling that slows blackmail by local gov't
»Telcos need to get a clue
»AT&T greed...
»Re: AT&T greed...

And now I'm an anti-corporate shill...
»Rebate Checks + Permanent Tax Cuts
...while being one of the few who sides with civil immunity for the telcos
»So what
»No win scenario for the Telcos

The fanboys will see only what they want to see. They have selective memories.

Meanwhile I'll continue my shilling on behalf of the taxpayers and rate payers.

Quack all you want, but you're still a shill to your own side. You go through and pull up selective posts to support your spin, however, you fail to pull the ones where I too don't support Comcast and I too have supported phone in where I feel they've done right.

So, in your quest to point the fingers at others around here, you have failed to support your arguments. One act of dissent doesn't take away that you are such an anti-XXXX extremest.

Besides, when did it become YOUR job to come to this forum and post the every so common "You're a shill" message to anyone that disagrees with you?

EVEN IF I were a shill, which I am not and is NONE of your concern, what the hell does it matter and who made you police of BBR? Last time I checked, you are not a Mod, so STOP ACTING LIKE ONE!

I think you need to take light to the TOS here at BBR.

»/terms.html

While I am not fearful of you, your constant harassment is getting old!

If you do not like the fact that I do not agree with you and you can't change it, then DO NOT RESPOND TO MY POSTS! Use the ignore button and move on!

Both you and BBR need to start enforcing their own TOS agreement here. I have a right to post my messages and views here in this forum with out someone like you coming behind me and acting like a 4 year old, calling me shill, and other names. I have every right not to have a view that does not agree with yours, no matter what that may be, and I have a right to do so, as do many others, with out being harassed as the way you have been.

Your actions are beyond cute or even funny.. they are down right harassing and belligerent . I'd advise you, and the mods here, to stop this activity immediately.

It is NOT your place to seek out and identify people who may or may not be so-call shills, now is it?

I am making this clean RIGHT NOW.. I am not a paid corporate spokes person, I am not compensated in anyway by ANY communications company, it is not my job OR hobby to defend or make any organization look good or better - PERIOD! You, and ANYONE ELSE who things so, needs to get this through your head. I speak ONLY for myself and my views are my own - NO ONE ELSES!

SO KNOCK IT THE F*&* OFF!

You, and your friends, need to knock it off and abide by the rules here at BBR, INCLUDING the mods who let people like you get away with this kind of behavior which goes against the very TOS that we ALL agree to by using this site.

Re: What a massive waste

LOL. Of course I'm a shill for my side. Duh. I shill for the little guy, Joe Taxpayer and Jane Ratepayer who are constantly screwed over by government, cable, telcos, the jerkoffs they bribe and everyone else who abuses their power.

You can go on shilling for Comcast all you want. No one is stopping you (obviously) and you're certainly not the only cable fanboy on DSLR. But don't expect your outrageous claims and endless defense of cable interests to go unanswered. No one here is going to give you are anyone else a free pass to spout endless corporate talking points or viciously attack anyone who dares speak ill of the all-mighty Comcast.

I will continue to slam Verizon, AT&T, Comcast, government, or their fanboy shill spokeholes whenever they spout lies and bullshit, support the lies and bullshit or regurgitate the lies and bullshit.

There is one thing telling about all this. You don't have problems giving me thumbs up when I'm defending Comcast or the cable industry from the cable haters and telco shills. But then you quickly turn and call it harassment when those same satirical guns are trained in the direction of the Coaxial Masters or their many minions. That's called hypocrisy. And you constantly belittle and flame people (the likely cause of so many moderator actions against you) usually while talking out your ass arguing with people way above your pay grade. And you think you're being picked on? Don't flatter yourself. Trust me, no one here gives you a second thought.

If you have a problem with a post or user your only recourse is to refute the post, ignore the post/user and/or use the Hey Mods button.

In the meantime I suggest you get some objectivity, don't post what you can't defend and don't boo hoo it up whenever people call you out for firing up your daily cable talking points. Every single post here is open for comment and critique and when posting patterns emerge, those patterns are open for comment and critique as well.

EDIT - Actually I just gave you a 1 extra thought.

The day before yesterday you called pspcrazy See Profile a "little boy" during one of your typical forum rule violating belittlementfests but it's obviously you who needs to man up. You dish it out constantly and now you're complaining about how you're a poor victim of a vast conspiracy that includes DSLR mods. Interesting that you feel that you should be able to dish it out as much as you want but you yourself should never be challenged.

I thought I would share an old post of yours with the class. I'll leave you with your own words...

Re: What a massive waste

No guy. Comcast's customer service is in decline (to the point they're rated lower than the IRS) and they're constantly raising prices. it's a valid bitch to protest these issues when they're wasting hundreds of millions on fluff. It's also valid when they're looking kill the ownership cap and acquire new cable systems, bringing their horrid service to new areas (like they did at my Inland Empire home where they bought ATTB and ran it into the ground).

Reverse the download spiral of customer service, slow the rate of the price increases to something even remotely reflecting inflation and THEN waste some dough on the fluff.

And in a lot of markets, Comcast has no competitor, especially in low latency data services. In others where there is a new competitor, Comcast engages in illegal predatory pricing to run them out of business. »Comcast Vs. Utopia »'Discounted' Competition

But enough of this. The cable fanboys will defend everything Comcast does no matter what just as telco fanboys defend everything the telcos do no matter what. Pointing out the obvious flaws in either industry doesn't slow down their regurgitation of corporate talking points.

When you exist in a market with very limited competition or basic non-competition you can spend as much money as you like on fancy luxuries and just increase the price to your subscribers to cover whatever expenses you like.... you also can get away with shoddier service and customer service due to the lack of options for the customers.

That's the basic point.

TK, Stop trying to use logic here with these people, it doesn't apply. They don't think that any business should make a profit, they don't think that these profits should be able to spent as they see fit - regardless of the arts mandate which is something that happens nationwide on all new structures with a certain price tag. They don't get it.

They believe because they purchase a service that it's a democracy how the profits are to be spent. I suppose, however, if that's how they want it, then maybe we should all be able to tell private people how to spend their earnings too. Maybe people shouldn't spend so much money on worthless cell phones, or eating out. Maybe they shouldn't waste it on frivolous things like vacations and trips. Maybe they should spend it on furthering their education and getting better jobs so they don't worry as much about spending their money they way they see fit.

When I saw this thread and before I entered it, I KNEW it would be this tone, OR, was waiting for people to ask if they were getting the HD feed from DirecTV.
