Imagine that you move to Canada with your unlocked GSM phone (common in Europe and Asia) and are told that your ratified GSM standard-meeting phone capable of use on the Rogers/Fido network is not allowed to be used under the same terms and conditions as a phone that Rogers supplies.
Hell, it could even be *exactly* the same model number and they'd still screw you on the data plan.
The government really screwed up when Fido was taken over by the banks. They should have allowed T-Mobile or somebody else from outside Canada to buy Fido and force the domestic companies to be honest (if that word could ever be used in connection with ANY telecom / cable company in this country), and competitive (I know, again with the pipe dreams).
I think that the CRTC should void Rogers rights to the airwaves for 3 months as a penalty. Bye bye Ted.

I still remember back in 2004 when i heard that Robers was going to buy Fido... I KNEW that prices will triple and that the good plans would be axed on the spot. And that's exactly what happened. The entire population got screwed in the end all thanks to the dead meat government/CRTC.
A sad moment in Canadian history.

| Neither Rogers nor Fido prevent you from using your own GSM phone on their network. The nature of GSM and roaming basically prevents them from doing that.
So if you buy a truly unlocked Iphone in europe (some countries legally prohibit locking of phones), you can bring on on rogers territory and insert any rigers or fido SIM card in it. Fido offers non-contract deals, so you can use that.
Until Apple sells fully featured unlocked Iphone not tied to any network, I won't touch it. Remember that networks not only lock the phone to their network, but also tailor down the available optiosn/menus on the phone. When you get the real unlocked phone, you get all the features advertised by the manufacturer.
When you get an iphone that has been unlocked, you only get the ability to change SIM cards, you do not get the original system software, you are still stuck with the tailored down software of whatever network the phone was originally locked to.

Please do your homework before posting. The iPhone is NOT modified/customized/castrated like the other phones. This is Apple's ONLY condition when they allowed the phone to be sold under contract with GSM carriers. If you buy an iPhone from Robbers and one for Telstra, the only difference between them is that they are locked on their respective providers. Once unlocked, they are EXACTLY the same. This is only valid for iPhones as His Holiness, Steve Jobs insisted upon it.
In my case, this is what i will do :
Buy an iPhone from Fido. Cancel the contract on the spot and pay the ETF/DECF fees and insert my good old Fido SIM in it and ask the dude behind the counter that my iPhone works before i walk out. If he refuses to perform a "fake" activation, there is hell to be had.

The hitch with changing the SIM is that you're still locked into the plan that got you the SIM! You now have 2 phones (one locked to Rogers and one unlocked) that you're sharing a single SIM card for ... kind of expensive and not very productive since you're either roaming on the original carrier if the SIM is still active (and paying through the nose roaming charges) or you're stiffed with Rogers call plan.
Moreover, one thing to watch out for is that GSM phones bought in Europe may or may not be usable in N. America unless enabled for N. Am. frequencies (and vice versa).

Fido was the ONLY carrier to offer :
1) CityFido = unlimited local calling for 40$ a month including the SAF !! No other carrier has offered unlimited calls ever since, and this particular plan was instantly killed by Robers as soon as they bought Fido.
2) Unlimited Data for 50$ !! I do mean UNLIMITED DATA here. You could put your SIM card in Any GSM device including DATA cards and enjoy unlimited DATA even in the states for that price. Again, NO carrier has offered something even close to this in Canada with no restrictions like Fido did.
You need to rethink before you spew BS like that again. Fido was the best carrier in Canada. In fact, they were the ONLY GSM carrier long before Robers saw the light and switched to GSM as well.

| >Microcell IS Fido, and Fido Solutions is owned by Rogers. > >Therefore, there is one GSM supplier in Canada that serves >all of the provinces (not territories).
There is no debate that Rogers owns the only nationwide GSM network in canada.
However, the 32-37 GSM code for Microcell still exists in worldwide GSM tables, and SIM cards announcing a customer of 32-37 are still issued by Fido. Fido's phones are locked to 32-37 and not to Rogers 32-72 network.
What Fido has done is a hack to make its phones appear to be on their home network when they roam on Rogers. Fido's orginal network was initlally almost all converted to broadcast 32-72 (Rogers), and then Rogers has progressively integrated it into its own network and removed redundant antennas. What is left of Fido would be small test sites.
With regards to the unlocked iPhones. I was not aware that Jobs had insisted that all Iphones had the full software optiosn enabled. I had heard rumblings last year about certain functions having been disabled at the request of AT&T (notably using Skype via wi-fi on the iphone).
However, buying an originally locked iphone still results in problems when upgrading the phone's software, and Apple makes that very clear: you unlock the iphone, and an attempt to upgrade its software may render phone inoperable.
This is why I would rather get a "true" iphone that was never locked and have my onw relationship with Apple instead of having one with Rogers and Fido for the phone.
GSM is meant to have phones independant from the carrier.
Note: I have a never-locked phone. I am a fido subscriber. The phone shows I am *roaming* on Rogers.
