Taproot's new Walking Hotspot software
(old news - 06:32PM Wednesday Mar 26 2008)
tags: wireless · hardware · networking
A company named Taproot has developed new "Walkiing Hotspot" software that can turn some Wi-Fi enabled smart phones into a 3G Wi-Fi router. At the moment, the software only supports Windows Mobile and Symbian S60 operating systems, but the company says they're working on expanding the platform. PC World notes that only HSDPA/UMTS phones will be able to support Wi-Fi & voice connectivity simultaneously (EVDO users would lose Internet connectivity when a call came in). Taproot's press release seems to think mobile carriers will like the idea:
The launch of WalkingHotSpot allows wireless subscribers to consolidate all their data connectivity needs into one source. "We see this as a truly disruptive technology that gives early carrier adopters a significant advantage in terms of differentiation, subscriber acquisition, increased ARPU and reduced churn," Mr. Bicksler added.

Carriers traditionally aren't huge fans of users sharing 3G connectivity via Wi-Fi, and have gone so far as to suggest such networking options constitute a theft of service. In other words, don't look for this to be an officially sanctioned software any time soon. Taproot should have demo of the software for download on their website before long, but the demo will only allow one Wi-Fi connection at a time.

For those who absolutely must check YouTube videos while camping, or have dreams of turning their Chevy Impala into a mobile broadband god, you do have other options: 3G Wi-Fi mobile routers are consistently getting smaller and cheaper. Users alert us to the fact that Windows Mobile 6 enables this functionality by default, making this software potentially even less relevant.

Soooo uhm what's the name of the software? Kinda seems important that if you are going through the trouble of creating a tutorial you should at least mention the name of it.

It's built in to WM6. There is no extra software needed.

LOL, you mean the Windows Mobile 6 that the single model iPhone that even hobbled with Edge is already handily outselling and when Exchange support comes out this summer and 3G after will easily finish off?

I've heard of that OS but like the Zen and Dodo, have never actually seen in the wild.

Baldy better get back to work on that strategy of his.

HTC user.

My mogul can do this. I would rather not share my data plan.

Re: HTC user.

yeah I've got the Mogul...I like to share my internet via wifi over to my laptop. It's nice because it requires no configuration on the computer whatsoever. I'm still trying to figure out if this is different than wmwifirouter.

Not Available to mortals

According to their site, you can only purchase the software through your wireless carrier. If it is the opinion of DSLReports that wireless carriers will not like this, the combination does not bode well for this product.

wmwifirouter.com has been doing this for like a year. Are they same company or is this another company trying to do the same thing?

wmwifi not available either

The only option for wmwifi is a trial version. It says the software expires in April and gives no option/price for purchase.

How is it that you guys have had this for a year, but the options today are so slim?

It used to be a freeware project, but the guys recently decided to go commercial with it. That was when the beta stuff started to kick in.

Just today i received the email announcing version 1.0 is officially out. Since I had filled out their survey I got 5 euros off and since I was an early order customer I got another 5 euros of of the 20 euro pricetag, meaning I picked it up for $14.95 USD which I think is a great price.

I would have gladly paid the ~$30 USD full retail for all this software can do.

maybe

Use your laptop as the router. The battery of the phone will appreciate it. I think the phone will even charge when tethered.
