Claims 94% broadband penetration but says it needs a little more
(old news - 01:27PM Saturday Mar 22 2008)
tags: coverage · business
The state of South Carolina has just published the findings of their participation in the Connected Nation program. As has been discussed here in the past, Connected Nation is a national broadband policy group with questionable motives and potentially inaccurate findings about the nation’s broadband penetration. True to form, the findings from South Carolina show that the state provides broadband access to 94% of its residents, a number which may be inflated. They go on to report that a modest increase in broadband penetration could create over 30,000 jobs in the state, save residents nearly $100 million annually in gas costs and create over $1 billion per year in direct growth. In theory, this information will be used to create that economic boost but only time will tell how these plans will really move forward.

Re: What a load of bull...

This goes along with my favorite saying... 99 percent of facts are made up.... yes it's satire but its true. I mean they got whatever data they wanted, skewed it, and put it into a fancy report. Now, ever idiot politician, without three braincells, will read it and make laws based upon these findings. Way to go morons.

Here's some questions I'd like answered:

1) Did they use the old standard or new for broadband. 200 kpbs or 768?

2) How did they acquire their statistics. Did they physically get access to ISP grids before making their findings. Basically, did they look to see that 8 million out of 9 million households live in a broadband available area and then create findings this way? If so, did they make sure these grids and the data provided were accurate and up to date?

3) Assuming 1 & 2 are true (which is very doubtful), was this institute free from bias when compiling their data. Basically, was there any incentive for them to go negative or positive in either direction. In this sense, who funded this study and where did that money come from. My gut feeling tells me there were entities behind this study who wanted the numbers to appear good.

I am sure they are just assholes that habitually just love to give out false info.

Maybe a unit of measure is in question. What is yours and how did you determine they were full of "bull"?

March 22nd, @08:44PM

Out of a population of 4,321,249 ('06 census), South Carolina has only 259,272 residents without broadband?
Not likely, is it?

I live in SC and that number is wrong

First off in many counties in SC most people simply cannot or will not pay for broadband. I worked with a guy when I was younger who shared a phone with a neighbor. They're whole neighborhood was shacks.

That stat is other BS. I live in a rich county and 94% doesn't apply to us.

Re: I live in SC and that number is wrong

Corehhi, not being able to afford broadband isn't the same as not being able to get it. They're saying 94% *can* get it, assuming they can afford it.

Wish it was 94%

Then maybe I would not have to constantly check my speeds on dsl reports to see if my satelite provider is giving me what I'm paying through the nose for.

Re: Wish it was 94%

Wow is that a total crock. There are too many places just here in Spartanburg County that do not have broadband available. Greenville county I can think off the top of my head the Hwy 101 north end of the county is dial up only.

Anderson County in the Honea Path area on dial-up. No cable or DSL offered.

I miss cable

@untd.com

Agreed. In Spartanburg as well. Can't get anything. DSL box down the road. No dice. Charter ended the cable line a baseball throw away from my house. Right at the golf course. Imagine that. And before I hear the rural area stuff, I have a school, supermarket a half a mile away from my house. But yes I realize it's not New York City.

Are you sure it wasn't just BellSouth refusing to upgrade the party line?

Re: I live in SC and that number is wrong

Good question. I assume it was for money reasons but there is a chance your right. I can tell you I was unable to get high speed till 2000. Last year or maybe the year before my 1 meg download was upgraded to a 3 meg download. That was the top tier till 2 months ago when I received a letter saying they were adding higher teirs if it's avaible in your neighborhood.

South Carolina releases Connected Nation Stats

94% is a joke!!! I live in Laurens County in Upstate South Carolina. There are still people in my home county that can only get dial-up and that's all. The BS perfortrated by Connected Nation is not merely dubious, it borders on absolute fraud on the taxpayers!! The State of South Carolina should go FTTH with muni-fiber with the following conditions:
1. Minimum internet speed of 2gigabits per second
2. A full build out and universal service for the whole state
3. All digital sd and hd channels
