Comcast senior VP of user experience Gerard Kunkel tells New Tee Vee Comcast is experimenting with embedding cameras in your DVR or cable box, allowing the company to know exactly who is watching what, at what time. In theory this would allow them to dial up user age/gender specific ads depending who is in the room (the "holy grail" of advertising, says Kunkel). Kunkel sold the idea of the technology being useful as a parental control mechanism, and says it would use facial recognition:
Kunkel said the system wouldn’t be based on facial recognition, so there wouldn’t be a picture of you on file (we hope). Instead, it would distinguish between different members of your household by recognizing body forms. He stressed that the system is still in the experimental phase, that there hasn’t been consumer testing, and that any rollout “must add value” to the viewing experience beyond serving ads.
It's hard to think that any consumer in their right mind would consent to Comcast watching them, watching Comcast.

If it was you better believe I'd be expecting to be paid. I don't work for free.
But hasn't been cable in my house for 7 years let alone a cable box so I'll just have to hope my website picks up

Pretty much a 'free' and new revenue stream for Comcast

Re: WTF?

Seriously, who does Comcast think they are?

Firstly, I hope and pray this will be a voluntary. Secondly, is this the best way to keep track of who is watching the TV? How about a simple login system? Login and select who is watching the TV if they are so damn interested in what people are watching.

Why does Comcast even care who is watching and what they are watching? They aren't content providers. They just deliver content. They should care less. The only reason is that content providers would probably pay Comcast a lot for that kind of information.

But seriously, does Comcast have a PR department? Do they care about their customers at all? I left Comcast and would suggest it to all other Comcast customers. They DO NOT care about their customers.

Re: WTF?

Ah, but they are content providers. Comcast Sports Net, E!, The Golf Channel, G4 and several others are owned by Comcast and they sell local ad insertions on all of their systems. Such technology would be a gold mine for them.

Which is why I am certain Kunkel was not joking around.

Its not about not having anything to hide its about the the fact that I don't always get dressed to watch tv. Whose to say they won't activate the camera when no one is watching TV?. Ever had sex in your living room? Better yet if you have one in your bedroom, would you really want a camera pointed right at your azz while you're freakin?

The Comcast guy was probably just having fun with the reporter. He did say it was AFTER the reporter turned his camera off.

Kunkel also spoke on camera with me about fixing bad Comcast user experiences, the ongoing BitTorrent battle and VOD. But he mostly towed the corporate line on these issues (the monitoring your living room came up after my camera was put away).

just a way for the cable company to be voyeurs. This is an invasion of the public's privacy, even law enforcement has to have a supeona from a judge to do wire taps, and thats just voice. I am not a comcast user but I know if this ever comes to bear fruit whos next the sattelite companies or what. The old men at comcast must need a new way to get their jollies off

rumors...

Long ago, in a broadcast world far far away, there were rumors.

The rumors went something like this, but keep in mind, they've been circulated a bit.. thus making them pretty unreliable

Some have claimed that Nielsen boxes had 'secret' capabilities such that it would/could detect body heat, some also claimed they had a microphone. Still others claimed they had cameras, and of course, there were some who claimed it had all of the above and then some...

I've known one household to have had a Nielsen box. I seriously doubt it had any such capabilities... it was mounted on the back side of the tube, out of sight... It was also a rather outdated looking piece of technology, though it was interesting to see it wired directly into the set itself - the installer had to wire it directly in line with the tuner I guess.

Not surprising in the least. It's an advertisers dream box; to glean every detail of your thoughts and impulses...

All DVR's rented from the cable co seem to have clauses in your contract where they tell you they know what you're tuned into...... this is the next step, sadly. And I honestly don't think most people will care, which is even more sad.

advertising

This is noting that a piece of duct tape can cure. More disturbing is the idea the advertiser need to know who I am I am sick and tired of targeting advertising; it called laziness. What happened to making a catch ad to reach a wide range of customers.

Comcast you can go to hell before I allow your camera in my living room. You can stick this in your pipe and smoke it.

Re: advertising

The problem with the duct tape solution is that if the remote sensor is integrated into the camera lense; duct tape will make life miserable because you'd have to change the channel manually.

I had a far more "exciting" idea for how I would cover the lens. Unfortunately, this is Comcrap we're talking about. They'll charge $199.95 to replace the lens, plus a $9.95 service charge. Tape's easier...just wipe off any adhesive residue.

Boggles the mind

Now what do they do if:

Someone is doing dope or underage teens drinking - call the cops?

Dog watching tv? - send commercials for dog food?

Just a baby watching - send ads for diapers?

A blank room? send no ads?

Someone is murdered - do they have to turn it over to law enforcement?

Big Brother to the extreme.

I am sure that if Comcast incorporates a snoop-o-matic camera in their DVR's they will make the camera the sensor for the remote control. I am sure they will also incorporate a SEX SPECTOR feature, in DVR's installed in master bedrooms, to make sure the subscriber is doing it the right way and not taking an illegal position. The terms of service will require that any X rated material recorded by the camera will become the property of the cable company for rebroadcast on the cable companies home porn channel. Most subscribers do not realize that the cable company makes a record of the channels you watch and when. In certain southern states you will be reported to the church lady on your block, if you watch the playboy channel or another X Rated Channel. This will be great for politicians that are subservient to the cable companies. The cable companies will provide a list of controversial programs that the politicians opponents watch for publication during political campaigns. Instead of Swift Boating a political opponent they will Click them Off.

Re: 1984

One step from the cameras in the box to the government having an open tap to watch the cameras anytime they want to protect us from the "terrorists". After all if it's ok for them to tap your phone without a warrant, then it's ok to tap cameras in your home without one as well. Remember, if you don't have anything to hide then you don't care if the government has a camera on every TV.

I thought the UK was going to make it to 1984 before we did, Comcasts plan's might just prove me wrong.
