'Cable cuts happen on average once every three days...'
(old news - 06:37PM Thursday Feb 07 2008)
tags: business · trouble · world · networking
The fact that five different undersea cables were cut in the Mediterranean and Persian gulf within a short period of time led to no shortage of sudden experts on the nature of undersea data transmission, half of whom put forth theories that the outages could not be coincidence and were, in fact, part of some master, diabolical plan by an evil underwater entity.

Was it an effort to derail Iran's launch of their petroleum exchange? Was it terrorism? Was Delta Force laying the groundwork for Dick Cheney's next war? Was it the Cloverfield monster trying to prevent Egyptians from playing World of Warcraft? Should you start stockpiling water and begin investing in gold?

Click for full size
Experts tell Wired News that the paranoia is overkill. Only the first two cut cables had any real, substantive impact on the Internet -- and they're in the process of being repaired. What about the frequency? "Cable cuts happen on average once every three days," says Stephan Beckert of TeleGeography Research. So what was the most likely cause? Either ship anchors or the motion of the ocean:
While any severed cable is a "cut" in the parlance of telecom, most often they're the result of cables rubbing against sea floor rocks, eventually cutting through the copper shielding and exposing the thin fiber optics inside.

LIES

Yes, lies.. it's all part of the cover-up so that those who are actually cutting these cables can continue to do so with impunity.

Re: LIES

Still very curious and seems statistically unlikely.

Internet provider in UAE confirms undersea cable cut between Dubai, Oman, cause unknown

quote:
Omar Sultan, chief executive of Dubai's IPS DU, said Friday that the incident was "very unusual." He said it was not known how the underwater FLAG FALCON cable, stretching between the United Arab Emirates and Oman, had been damaged.

quote:
"The site is a restricted area, which excludes the possibility that the malfunction resulted from a crossing ship," the ministry said in a statement. Internet efficiency in Egypt has reached about 70 percent, the statement said....
Flag Telecom's network is one of the "newest in existence" so it would be unlikely that the cables would break because of wear and tear or age.
Undersea cables extremely vulnerable say analysts

quote:
Data from the field
In deep waters, cable cuts are rare. According to one paper presented at last year's SubOptic conference in Baltimore, Maryland, rates of cable fault in water over 1km deep are less than 0.1 faults per year, per 1,000km of installed cable. This implies around 50 deepwater repairs per year, globally. At depths of less than 1km, failure rates hovered between 1-2 per 1,000km in the 1990s, but have been steadily declining. According to a SubOptic 2004 paper, the rate in 2003 was 0.2 fault per 1,000km. This same paper estimated that 60% of all cable cuts occur in waters less than 100 meters deep. Of all cable faults, roughly three-fourths are due to "external aggression," the bulk of which is accidental human activity, namely, fishing, anchors, and dredging; a small portion of the 75% is natural, e.g., from earth movement and chafe, sometimes caused by earthquakes. Equipment failures and unknown - some portion of which could be theft or attempted theft/sabotage - account for the remainder. In deep water, natural causes and/or cable equipment failure dominate; human causes are rare. Hence, when cables fail in deep water, usually a natural and detectable event is the cause, as with the late 2006 earthquake near Taiwan, the last quake to cause multiple simultaneous outages. An earthquake, albeit small (magnitude 4.8) was reported February 2 in the Persian Gulf and could have affected cables there.

I wonder if he needed a license to use that image... Someone won't be happy if they find out that a popular site is using their images without permission.

Ha. This is a user generated site. Meaning if the "owner" of that picture has a problem he can send the owners of this site a DMCA take down request. Then the site takes it down. Then if he is truly an ass, he can go to court and subpoena records to attempt to identify the person who copied the image and sue that person for damages if he can ever succeed in identifying the user. So in conclusion that "someone" who won't be happy can't do anything.

Though, instead of a scythe he should be riding a backhoe with an anchor dragging behind it, and possibly carrying a shotgun. The three most common fiber cutting tools.

Finally - common sense

The conspiracy theorists really need a heavy dose of Thorazine to get their paranoid delusions under control.

Or maybe a tinfoil hat to protect them from the government rays affecting their minds.

No it's just the New England Pats starting their preliminary work to gear up for next season.

The NYGiants stung them by staging a faked final practice session for the Pats to tape, right before the Super Bowl.

Sore Looser Billy Belichick, won't let that ever happen again.

Must record every play, must capture every frame of video, every word of audio, must tape every practice, must crack QB Helmet Radio Encryption too.

I hear rumors that the Pats are planning on putting in a bid for Google as well.

Paranoid Dessert

"Cable cuts happen on average once every three days..."

Isn't great how our spy subs do such a great job at making their cuts look like damage?

Re: Paranoid Dessert

Setting aside the doom and gloom, cable cuts averaging 1 every 3 days? Why the hell haven't they done something about that, and how can they afford THAT many repairs?

And why has it taken more than a week to fix the first two cuts? With 1 every 3 days, you'd think by now they'd have the repair down to an "eyes closed" art.

There is a logical explination for this...

it was probably a turbidity current, a deep ocean current that was responsible for the Atlantic telephone outage of the 50s or 60s (can't remember which)

Slow news days for the MSM. Couldn't find anything new about Bush to use on the *conspiracy* angle. Apparently, they've finally reached the bottom of the sewer barrel, so they're looking elsewhere for their daily quota of *conspiracies*.

Won't someone think of the children. We have to protect the children.

Seriously, I don't know what is going on but I'm sure that the cable cut every 3 days is a lie. You know they would have figured a way how to stop that from happening all the time. That would add up to a lot of money.

Back to the children. Stop the cable cuts because it will currupt the children. Just like everything else. Children think of the children.

The number may be closer to 9...

...at least if you believe this guy.

The last week has seen a spate of unexplained, cut, undersea communications cables that has severely disrupted communications in many countries in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. As I shall show, the total numbers of cut cables remain in question, but likely number as many as eight, and maybe nine or more.

The trouble began on 30 January 2008 with CNN reports that two cables were cut off the Egyptian Mediterranean coast, initially severely disrupting Internet and telephone traffic from Egypt to India and many points in between. According to CNN the two cut cables "account for as much as three-quarters of the international communications between Europe and the Middle East." CNN reported that the two cut cables off the Egyptian coast were "FLAG Telecom's FLAG Europe-Asia cable and SeaMeWe-4, a cable owned by a consortium of more than a dozen telecommunications companies".(10) Other reports placed one of the cut cables, SeaMeWe-4, off the coast of France, near Marseille.(9)(12) However, many news organizations reported two cables cut off the Egyptian coast, including the SeaMeWe-4 cable connecting Europe with the Middle East. The possibilities are thus three, based on the reporting in the news media: 1) the SeaMeWe-4 cable was cut off the coast of France, and mistakenly reported as being cut off the coast of Egypt, because it runs from France to Egypt; 2) the SeaMeWe-4 cable was cut off the Egyptian coast and mistakenly reported as being cut off the coast of France, because it runs from France to Egypt; or 3) the SeaMeWe-4 cable was cut both off the Egyptian and the French coasts, nearly simultaneously, leading to confusion in the reporting. I am not sure what to think, because most reports, such as this one from the International Herald Tribune, refer to two cut cables off the Egyptian coast, one of the two being the SeaMeWe4 cable,(11) while other reports also refer to a cut cable off the coast of France.(9)(12) It thus appears that the same cable may have suffered two cuts, both off the French and the Egyptian coasts. So there were likely actually three undersea cables cut in the Mediterranean on 30 January 2008.

Yes. Every Three Days

Why of course. Can't you see all the repair ship rushing around. Repairs take only minutes depending on how many photons have excaped. The hard part is blow drying the cable before putting it back into the Internet tube.

Fiber demand goes up prices come down?

Maybe someone is on to something. Everytime I go fishing and take my boat out I see to cut fiber optic cable with my outboard engine. LOL

No seriously What people want to believe is fine with me.

Maybe a boat drops an anchor and then draggs a fiber optic line for miles and runs into another line and drags that one.... hmmm, maybe ships are changing the landscape of the underwater fiber scene.. haha not really.

Or is fiber cables just chew toys for Whales and sharks.
