This year they've gotten cheaper, smaller, and in some cases -- ultra-portable. Gizmodo points to the new CradlePoint PHS300, a small, rechargable unit that can turn your EV-DO 3G phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot wherever you may roam. Supporting both WEP and WPA encryption, the PHS300 rocks a built-in firewall to protect you and communicates with Wi-Fi devices using 802.11b/g. There's also an optional 12v car adapter available. Shipping December 20, the PHS300 will cost $180. Keep in mind that EV-DO operator and new spokesman for open networks (Verizon) has traditionally disliked such devices, and considers them a violation of your terms of service.

| 3G Routers I recently switched from AT&T's mobile broadband to Sprint, despite 5 months remaining on my contract. One of the main selling points: the slow as molasses (Cingular)/AT&T TOS clearly stated that using the service at home was a violation. I never had the Verizon mobile broadband, but the Cingular/AT&T experience tells me the Verizon rep is probably correct in calling it a violation. Sprint's TOS not only says no such thing, you can buy one of the router's at the Sprint store. It is actually worth trying to wade through those TOS's. Now I have a wireless connection for my laptop that is actually faster than dial-up, and I have a backup at home if RR goes down. | |

| Posting this on a KR1 I've been using a KR1 for about 2 years, and the TopGlobal MB6000 for about a year. These things are great, but buying any 3G router off the shelf without any preplanning may not work out.
With every previous 3G router, you need to make sure it supports your device. Firmware upgrades typically increase the number of supported devices.
The PHS300 has no Ethernet jack. That might be an issue. I run VPNs, audio, video; pretty much everything short of P2P through EVDO and have had video (ie streaming, flash video, etc) problems (at the router) when connecting 802.11. I've also had VPN issues via 802.11 that go away when I go Ethernet.
Audio, browsing, etc. don't seem to be a problem.
Anytime you plan on tethering your phone, you should look at your provider plan. Some folks have signed up for a web upgrade package for their phone, but not the full 3G option, and then tethered their phones. Some have been booted for doing that. Others haven't.
I'd visit »evdoinfo.com and »howardforums.com and see if someone has used your provider the way you want to.
All in all, I love these things. Once a month, I take an entire company to a remote location for 4 days for a retail event where reliability is crucial. The time, money and trouble we save on getting DSL or (Ack!) dialup pre-prepared is worth 5x what we have in this setup.
I also dig my van being a mobile hotspot; albeit a secure one.

| Hold Off if you are on GSM I have a Cradlepoint on my shelf (I think the 350 rather than the 300). I bought it when they promises support on a number of phones. That list has disappeared. I have a Windows Mobile 6 device (HTC Tytn), and two Symbian 6 devices the (Nokia E61 and E65). None of these are currently supported. | |

First of all, Verizon does not have the largest EVDO network in terms of population coverage. Sprint covers about 215-220m pops with plans to hit 230m this month. Verizon last reported 210m. Sprint's is even larger when you include Alltel roaming, which Verizon doesn't do.
And Sprint not only allows such devices, they sell them.
