Minnesota AG to thank for some of it...

Congratulations Sprint customers! Given that the company's customer service has been robustly miserable since their Nextel acquisition, the company today announced that they're providing a "new customer experience," which will take effect on Monday, November 12.

Among the changes Sprint is implementing to help stem defections is a new prorated early termination fee (ETF) policy, a courtesy call to tell users they're over their minutes, a thirty day free-trial period, and a new reward program for long-time customers. Some of the changes won't be implemented until '08.

Also mentioned in the press release is that Sprint will no longer be extending customer contracts on the fly every time you make minor changes to your plan. It must have slipped Sprint's mind to mention it, but you should probably thank the Minnesota State Attorney General Lori Swanson for that last change.

She sued Sprint for violating State consumer protection laws and misleading consumers. The resulting win got Sprint, AT&T and Verizon to change their ways when it comes to early termination fees and long-term contract extensions.

Great news

So the Prorated ETF will take effect on Monday? Hope so.

I called last week to cancel my EVDO card service due to slowness during peak hours. They said it was going to be $150. I had no problems with that but they were pushy and wouldnt let me cancel. The girl said I had to wait until the end of the month because thats when the billing cycle starts or ends. Thanks to her, I'll save a few bucks from the ETF, haha.

"Plus during 2008, Sprint plans to implement a new prorated early termination fee (ETF) policy. More specific launch information and details of that policy will be announced next year."

You're right

Oh well, I was expecting to pay $150 last week anyways. I only had my hopes up for 15 mins or so

Thanks to the MN AG!

These are all very welcome changes. Seeing as I'm going to be OTR when I start my new job, I'll be glad not to have to extend my contract when I change my plans to account for my new phone usage habits. The 30-day free trial is also good news for people wanting to try out the mobile broadband (which will also be going OTR with me).

Re: Die Sprint die!

How insightful of you.

What crappy technologies would they be anyway? Would one of them be the superior lower frequency that has been good for me? allowing me to be in the basement of high rises and still have signal? How about the quick, fasted most reliable 2-way service? Would one of them be the Rev A broadband with low pings and fast speeds?

Please... enlighten us.

I agree Sprint has a horrible customer service department, but I hardly see how the crosses over to their technology. If you want to be accurate, there isn't a single PCS provider out there that is 100% reliable at all times in all places.

That's what people fail to admit. They bad mouth the company as a whole because of CS but when they jump ship, they cry about the network. So, suck it up and deal with crappy customer service or deal with a network that's not as dependable. I liken it to car dealers. You can have the best product every made, but a crappy dealer and service experience can make you shop elsewhere when your in the market for a replacement, or you can have a crappy product but have your ass kissed everytime you call in. Guess some people just can't get their priorities in order. And you are 100% right. NO BODY, NO CARRIER is 100% the best. They ALL have issues, just when your in the ring, people tend to beat you up more.

And I wouldn't give MN AG too much credit. Verizon and ATT deserve the pats on the back. It's the market, not the STATE(S) who got them to make the change. Me, to stop all the crying and bitching, I would drop the EFT all together. Give the customer 2 choices. Pay FULL price for the phone and go month to month, or get your rebates and subsidy for 1 year contract. You cancel before that year is up, you owe Sprint a prorate amount for the phone. You get to keep the phone, or you can turn it in for a credit, as long as it's servicable. I'm sure there would be lots of people willing to pay 500.00 for a treo, then 6 months later, cancel service and pay 250.00 bucks..

Their customer service sucks

When I called, I could not understand what they were saying, it's clearly sprint outsources to India.

How sad is this?

If you want to improve customer service, bring CSR's back to america.

Re: Their customer service sucks

That's funny, I called today and it clearly sound like an English Speaking American to me.
Besides, I had a Co-worker call AT&T (formally Cingular) last week and he commented how the person sounded like they were in India.
This is not just Sprint but a lot of Companies are doing this.

I've always got American CS, but I call during normal business hours.

I heard Americans prefer the Canadian near-shored agents to American agents...They're probably nicer because our labour laws are more strict and so they are treated better. Not because they're better people. :-P

No, they don't outsource to India. Don't you read? They just hired a load of people in their Panama City FL call center and added staff to others. Maybe your thinking of Virgin Mobile.

And.. with all the hoopla over what Sprint is doing. No one notice, T-Mobile is following the pack also. I would be thanking VZ and AT&T for Sprints actions.

Many who say Sprint sucks is talking about the past. They changed customer service, they've added CDMA to thousands of Nextel sites, their data service is better than anyone else. Some studies say they have the least dropped calls.

But so many people will still say Sprint sucks based on the past even if they've improved significantly... even if better than other carriers.

It's to the point that many WANT Sprint to suck.

CS does suck

But I have been a Sprint customer for 9 years and I cant cant complain about coverage. I can recall many times (especially back in the day) when I was the only one in my group to have service everywhere we went. From my corner of the world (southern Cali) I'd take poor CS and excellent coverage over alot of whats out there anyday. Don't get me wrong, the other providers have caught up but I can get a digital signal almost anywhere I go. And if I dont get one, you probably dont either.

Well Rob do you know what that means?
ATT or Verizon or Sprint take CSR to other countries in order to maintain cheap prices, they can hire maybe 3 or 4 Indian or Philippines people do the job for less money.

If you want CRS back , get ready to pay lot more!

Re: Their customer service sucks

Every at&t rep I have spoken to (about ten of them) has been American. This is since I switched from Sprint in August.

Too late

Its too late for me. I took my three lines and left Sprint for at&t in August. So far, I am happy. I have had to call at&t customer service several times for various issues. All of my calls have been answered promptly and all of the at&t reps I have spoken with have been friendly, understandable, and helpful.
