Astroturf, sock puppets and 'objective experts' ahoy...
(old news - 01:02PM Wednesday Sep 26 2007)
tags: competition · business · Op/Ed · telco · Politics · consumers
Other than their recent agreement that there shouldn't be broadband taxes, Google and the incumbent phone operators (AT&T, Verizon) just don't get along. They're on completely different sides of the fence when it comes to issues like network neutrality and truly open wireless networks.

Art Brodsky of Public Knowledge pens a piece on how the phone companies are sending their sock puppets after Google to attack their credibility wherever possible. Some are even testifying before Congress as "objective experts" in opposition to Google's $3.1 billion acquisition of DoubleClick:
And then there is the last, most curious witness, Scott Cleland of the Precursor Group. His interest in Google is recent, going back to last year and his interest in DoubleClick even more recent.

That’s because he doesn’t really care about Google or its policies except for one aspect. Google opposes his main clients, the Bell companies, on Net Neutrality, spectrum auctions and a range of other issues.
Cleland, who's employed as a policy agent and lobbyist by the phone companies, is offended that someone would highlight that he's a for-hire PR man dressed up as an objective expert. "Mr. Brodsky is not the first person to come after me for my provocative forward-thinking and unconventional views, nor will he be the last," says Cleland at his blog.

The telcos aren't the only folks firing up their astroturf machine to attack Google. A new leaked e-mail this week embarrassed Microsoft by showing that they hired a PR firm to create a new organization dubbed "Initiative for Competitive Online Marketplaces" tasked primarily with casting doubt on the Doubleclick deal.

The result of these attacks, of course, will be Google's inevitable use of similar tactics, though they'll be up against a formidable opponent. The phone industry has perfected their PR and lobbying game to the point where they're able to use the Department of Justice as a PR agent. The loser in the end will be the consumer, as it's increasingly more difficult to find the telecom truth amidst all the public relations and lobbyist smoke.

Meanwhile, well-lobbied lawmakers have made it abundantly clear they couldn't care less.

lobbyists...

...should be jailed and what they do should be illegal. the same goes the officials they bribe.

we are no longer a government for the people, by the people. we are becoming a government against the people, by the lobbyists.

This is exactly why I own AT&T stock....

Ethical questions aside, they are extremely good at protecting and perfecting the environment for their businesses with a focus on making stockholders money. Legally. And why i'm happy.

How could they not do it legally when they are the ones writing the laws?

This is exactly why I own GOOGLE stock....

You lack of vision is shared with that of AT&T: Failure to have anticipated the ad-revenue stream lost from slower traditional models.

Google's search engine has more information than phone books ever did. AT&T (as well as US West, Former BellAtlantic now Verizon...) took the wrong approach to the internet (controlling the lines, they never knew what hit them).
So now, I'm happy with Google and its +$400/share...vs $23 for ATT (I doubt your dividends will compare to GOOG $568/shr)

Re: This is exactly why I own GOOGLE stock....

You do realize that stock price alone is pretty much irrelevent. What's important is growth and dividends. For the price of AT&T a person could buy a certain amount of google stock and in relation to that the difference between dividend comes into play.

FWIW... people get ticked about AT&T helping the gov't collect data meanwhile Google dumped it's search queries out into the open and regularly help the Chinese gov't censor dissidents.

Re: This is exactly why I own GOOGLE stock....

This is exactly why stock prices are holding down any productive thinking when it comes to a national broadband policy. Companies are so worried about the bottom line at any given moment that they won't do anything to benefit the collective masses. Look at Verizon...a broadband vision through fiber that pisses off stockholders because of the price it costs to upgrade their network. Now Look at ATT, shoveling crap on 100 year old copper. The only reason they got into the tv business is because of the digital conversion and they have lobbiests in place. But hey, their stock price is holding....
So when you see a story about 100mbps service in Korea or wherever, know you won't see it anytime soon because people are worried about the current stock price!

You're an engineer, right?

Then you must realize that you can't make something from nothing. Investors invest because they expect a return on their money. When you screw them over you stop getting investors.

Or we could always go the socialist route and make people pay for fiber to the house under threat of arrest.

Re: This is exactly why I own GOOGLE stock....

Don't we already pay a ton of money in taxes on our phone bill for "universal service?" Why is phone service one of the most heavily taxed things you can purchase in this country?

I say we are already paying for fiber deployment, and the money is getting pissed away like only Washington bureaucrats can piss away money.

You pay like a buck or two a month for universal service. And the people of Mink, Louisiana thank you for subsidizing their $47,000 per line telphone cost.

Why is MS in the Act?

What does Microsoft have to gain by pushing against net neutrality in an effort to shaft Google? Wouldn't a lot of their business also be adversely impacted if they had to pay more additional fees to get their product and/or updates to customers?

I understand why the telcos are in this lobbying/astroturfing schtik, but MS? Kinda looks like you're shooting yourself in the foot.

Because Microsoft has designs on Google's revenue stream. Information is power - and right now, Google has most of the power.

Re: Why is MS in the Act?

But then, again, taking over Google's revenue stream by trashing the business model as a whole? It just sounds like bad business...but I hope I'm missing something here. It'd be kinda unlike Microsoft to give themselves their own shafting in the business world.

They anticipate the future when they will own all the pipelines. After they buy out AT&T etc

Stealth War ??

Couldn't really be a stealth war, could it? What with news items and web sites and bloggers publishing the info. And they are only doing what Google has been doing. Google has been attacking MS and the telcos for more than a year. Turn around is fair play.

Re: Stealth War ??

Explain how Google has been attacking? If you mean "Defending itself" ever since Ed Whitacre declared that Google should have to triple-pay for using "His pipes" well, I guess you could consider defending oneself as an attack.

It is a stealth war. If it were not, they would not be hiring groups with misleading names. The companies are not putting out press releases directly attacking Google but using PR firms disguised as grass roots consumer groups.

At least Google is standing up when they go after MS and the telcos and not hiding behind PR firms.

Google drinking the Chineese poison

Dvorak penned a column, bringing to light something I had been noticing lately. It was a problem for me as recently as tonight.

Google's search algorithms are sucking up poison from corrupted servers and feeding it to us in the form of bizarrely corrupted search results. Most of the servers are from China, but when I limit my search results to english results I'll still pick up a few from East European TLD's.

It's annoying, but I haven't figured out what to make of it.

Google is Going to Bed with an Internet Usage Tracker!

Put aside the hate for Microsoft. Do you know what this means, Google going to bed with DoubleClick.

DoubleClick has been on my spam, no cookie, firewall block list for years. And now google is going to force doubleclicks crap on me. Bye Google Toolbar. MSDN and Yahoo have used DoubleClick's competitors cross browser cookies for years. And now Google is going to put their foot in the water.

Haven't done this in a while, but try this. Do a spyware scan and clean everything. Then go to MSDN. Now do a spyware scan and see what detects. Clean everything. Now go to Yahoo. Now do a spyware scan and see what detects. It's probably still lots of spyware cross browser cookies.

So now Google gets marked of the list of safe sites to use.
