1 edit | Re: Verizon FiOS still smokes the competition. FiOS doesn't win in many states... The report:
• has FiOS as the fastest ISP in states that don't have FiOS.
•compares the fastest FiOS speed tier (the one that most early adopters are getting) with blended speed tiers from the massive customer base of cable and DSL. This data is all bogus.
•In one state Verizon DSL beats Verizon FiOS...

As far as speed goes, it doesn't matter which tier of the other services you compare FIOS to, it will always come out the fastest. (for home use) So I don't know as though that matters to the end result, though I agree the inconsistency taints their entire article
FIOS as the fastest in states that don't have FIOS? My guess would be SOME places do, even if it's just a VZ Test site. And they just took the FCC accounting of broadband to the state level, rather than zip code.
I haven't read the article, but based on my client's experiences getting FIOS installed, I would guess that is the reason their DSL beat them somewhere. | Grabit Grabit is a pretty good measure of your download speed and the fluctuations. I download binaries nightly and the speed varies tremendously. I pay for a 6 M Dsl line sometimes I get a tremondous download sometimes it crawls. If you bitch, you bitch to some soul in India who hasn't eaten in 2 weeks. They can't understand you and you can't understand them. Oh how I love the "New AT&T" (sigh) But they do give me the binaries. So I am not taking Indian language lessons yet. Bud

| Re: Fluctuating Download Rates said by buddyfrench :I download binaries nightly and the speed varies tremendously. I pay for a 6 M Dsl line sometimes I get a tremondous download sometimes it crawls. The fact that your download rates (electricity travels at the same speed regardless) vary is no indication of how well your DSL service performs. It's the last link in a very long and often tangled web of traffic. And it's the only part where you have the circuit all to yourself.
You're only one out of a billion people and/or computers who are contending for a share of the capacity of anywhere from dozens to thousands of individual circuits that come into play during a long download. Each of these circuits can be servicing a very large number of individual transactions, each with unique terminal points, at any given moment. So, given the staggering number of variables involved in so many places aside from your DSL line, it's simply not reasonable to attribute much statistical significance to the rate at which data travels from an Internet host to your computer to your DSL connection.
To look at it a different way, if you have a long commute that takes you across many primary, secondary and tertiary public roads, widening your driveway isn't going to reduce your commute time.

| How can they rate dialup speed- it's all the same! Major dialup ISP's all buy their dialup numbers from wholesalers, and there's only a few wholesalers out there. Therefore, they all pretty much use the same providers. How can they say "Netzero is faster than when they're most likely dialing into the same place? Dialup speeds are based on phoneline quality anymore, so it's a pretty stupid comparison. | |

| PC Magazine The rag has not been relevant (to me anyway) in over 5 years (maybe longer).
It has morphed from a by-weekly tech filled magazine with tips, tricks and software and the main reason I found out about Dell, Gateway, Micron and other companies.
At $4.99 cover price, the magazine is very thin and the information just not worth the price when better, faster, CHEAPER information is available online.
The days of interesting article from the likes of John C. Dvorak and others are long gone.
Broadband Reports (formerly DSL REPORTS) is "THE" source for broadband information and testing tools.
