The Difficulties of Blazing a Trail in Harrisonburg
(old news - 02:07PM Saturday May 05 2007)
tags: municipal · IPv6
Harrisonburg, VA has made headlines for its work towards becoming the first city with a citywide IPv6 network but what does it mean to be a trailblazer in this area? It means, in part, that there are no examples to work from so when problems come up with realizing the new system, it’s up to Harrisonburg to figure them out. But they seem to be rising to the challenge; when they needed to figure out how to incorporate both existing and new IP standards into the network, they simply made the new software themselves. If it goes well, this could put Harrisonburg on the map as one of the most forward-thinking Internet cities in the U.S.

Where is the closer look at IPv6?

Where is the "closer look" at IPv6?

I'm glad I don't live in Harrisonburg, where apparently taxpayers have no problem with the way their city hall IT people waste their tax money playing with useless internet technology.

Re: Where is the closer look at IPv6?

If you consider the fact that theres not enough IP's for the up and coming electronics/devices in the future with our current standard, IPv4. I would hardly call it a waste of money. It's a great step into future. it's going to happen sooner or later, and IPv6 will be the new standard.

Given the effectiveness of NAT, this is pretty overblown. I'll be surprised to see IPv6 adopted any time soon. I think H'burg is jumping the gun on this.

if this was 1907 you'd be one of those complaining about wasting tax payer dollars and things like roads for those new fangled horseless carriages and things like indoor plumbing and electricity

You hate them damned horseless carriages too, huh? And nothing wrong with using a good ole outhouse and dried piece of corn cob on a stick to wipe your butt.

Their is no tax payer money used on the IPv6 project.
It is completly funded by the Wireless franchise holder and their investors

not waste of money

with the release of DOC 3.0 all cable providers will be switching too IPv6 at the same time they upgrade to DOC3.0 so it will happen pretty soon within the next 2-3 years. So its in no way a waste of money....

Re: not waste of money

cable providers want IPv6 because NAT doesnt work which means the customer has no choice but to buy multiple IPs.

3 yrs now and nothing

Hey everyone,
My problem is that this project is going on 3yrs old and there is nothing to show. Maybe they city should give the franchise to another company. It tech idea is good, but the wireless ipv6 network and the reports are just fluff. The city needs to reissue this thing. Just do a google search for all the news stories about this thing over the last few years. The whole project was going to be done last summer, then december of last year. Hype.

here's what's happening with this...

Like JonesHenry, I posed the question: What has actually been done with this?

I live in Harrisonburg, and have written about this topic for the past few months on hburgnews.com and have talked to people closely involved with the project (members of city council, current and former World Airwaves partners, etc)

Like vli1 said, there is no tax money (state, federal, or local) paying for this project. But the more I find out about it, the more I doubt it will ever happen. No one is reporting the facts here, they just keep quoting people who say "Harrisonburg will be first!" over and over again.
