Didn't like the ad that made fun of TWC capacity
(old news - 04:52PM Friday Apr 20 2007)
tags: legal · competition · business · bandwidth · HDTV
Time Warner Cable has lost a lawsuit against DirecTV over an ad that claimed the satellite provider has three times the capacity to offer HD programming of a higher quality. As we've noted, the satellite provider says they'll be offering 100 new high-def channels this year, something that only came about because, in 2004, they decided to focus capacity on HD, not broadband. Time Warner Cable says that through their use of switched digital video (see previous report here), they'll be able to free up bandwidth and offer as many new HD channels as DirecTV.

Don't worry, TWC

I would have just kept quiet. When customers realize that there are not really 100 quality HD channels to release, Direct will be reaping the backlash.

Those 100 channels are going to be mostly a bunch of different local networks that not all customers will be able to access. 25 different markets with 4 locals per market = 100 hd channels. Whooo!

Those aren't the 100 channels they're talking about. DTV is already at the point (or close to it) with the local HD service.

The "license" taken with "over 100 channels" is that some will be subscription (NFL Sunday Ticket, etc). Will there be 100 channels for everyone to see? Absolutely not. Will there be SIGNIFICANTLY more than there is now? Absolutely.

Last time I counted, DirecTV had about 230 local HD channels up and running this month.

That's more than what I thought - but I suspected it was quite a significant number due to the number of DMA's served with "the big 3" networks. I didn't know just how many for SURE - hence the "or close to it" disclaimer.

There are close to 30 national hi def's right now (that includes movie channels) There are at least a dozen or more stations that will be starting HD programming this summer/fall (SciFI HD is supposed to launch around June), most of those channels are doing so because DirecTV has agreed to broadcast them where the cable companies wouldn't.

Personally I have no doubt there will be at least 75 HD channels by the end of the year (and probably a 100 if you included pay-per-view). The reason the channels don't exist right now is because none of cable companies or satellite had the capacity or the willingness to broadcast more.

Re: Don't worry, TWC

DirectTV, in that ad said, "what, you don't believe us ...that's what they said about the flux capacitor ...."

Do they not know the flux capacitor isn't real? But TWC is actually right. To claim to have 3 times the capacity is obviously ridiculous.

What a waste

Instead of wasting money on legal fee suing another party, TWC should use that money and upgrade their equipment or whatever. Now I see where all those cable bill increases come from.

That, and the issues that they've had to deal with in Los Angeles over the Adelphia/Comcast takeover.

DTV a broadband company?

I know this is a Broadband site, but I think it was a wise on DTV's part to abandon the expansion of internet service in favor of HDTV.

I have Fios, so I don't need higher speeds - but I have noticed a marked reduction in the amount of time spent in front of my PC in favor of watching my HDTV. I believe DTV made the right choice as far as their business model is concerned - that being a TV service provider.

Granted, DTV's HD offerings are slim at present, I know that I am not alone awaiting their expanded HD service.

Battle of HD-lite

Who gives a crap, both DBS and cable HD looks like ass compared to OTA HD. I can certainly see a marked difference in pic quality flipping between OTA network and E* carried network HD. And when I had D* I saw the same thing.

This suit is like TWC being pissed that DirecTV claims their Gremlin is better than cable's Pacer.

E*, D* and TWC shouldn't be able to call their recompressed rate shaped crap HD at all.

While I will agree with you as far as D* and E* go, not all cable providers are the same. Where I live Comcast does not alter the HD signal in anyway before passing it on to customers. The price on the other hand.......

Re: Battle of HD-lite

The price probably isn't that bad if you figure in the cost of having to buy DBS equipment. Even with DBS leases like I have with E*, the box upgrade fees can be steep. When I had D* my HD DirecTiVo's were $1000 each and now are virtually worthless as they moved on to MPEG4 for any new HD channels.

$2G's would pay MANY months of Comcast's overpriced DVR box rental fees and if they break Comcast replaces them.

Vacuumware?

I think this whole dispute can be summarized as "My vaporware can beat your vaporware."

A more interesting question: in the case of satellites, should that be "vacuumware"?

The Perils of Counting HD Channels

It's a bit subversive to count all local channels against a national HD count; what's relevant is how many actual channels can be received at any given time? So quit double counting channels that are taken down, like PPV, and replaced with NFL Sunday Ticket. Count it once, ok. And don't count channels a customer can NEVER see.

Bell ExpressVu in Canada plays this game: they claim over 50 HD channels but they only have enough transponder space for 43 to any given customer. And even some of these are blank ie no programing whatsoever some of the time. The reality is they have about 40 channels, including PPV, tunable at any time.

Rogers, local cable company, has about the same number -- including recently launched HD Movies On Demand. Should that be counted as 1 PPV channel? Or the number of movies available to start at any time?
