Paper bag puppets to be laid off...

Tipped by JSRoman See Profile
Comcast today announced that they are buying Fandango and subsequently launching a new video watching website named "Fancast." According to the press release, Fandango gets between 4 and 5 million unique visitors each month (compared to 15 million for Comcast.net), and the two will now have a very symbiotic relationship. Comcast also recently launched the Gameinvasion portal and has been working on a YouTube knockoff named Ziddio. Former AT&T Broadband exec Leo Hindery's vision of a ISP dominated portal business is eeking toward reality, though some still think network operators should focus on running a network.

Fandango stays separate for it's traditional movie ticket selling business and should see no effects from their purchase one way or the other. Except maybe get a few more eyeballs sent their way from Comcast playing them up on the comcast.net web portal.

Fancast.com will be a joint venture designed as another movie download service and will or will not make it based on the content they can sign up and what prices they charge and on DRM issues if any.

Yeah, because someone interested in the latest video is going to stop drooling and boycott the video because it's hosted by a Comcast-owned company...

If you didn't notice the and that's not my problem. Almost all of your posts have a pissy attitude, why don't you climb off that high horse of yours?

LOL! Comcast will suck up all independent companies. As much as I think this is bad who the hell is this company anyways when I realize this I think "Damn maybe this isn't such a bad thing for the customers of this company"

Wow, comparing buying out Fandango to curing cancer.

That's a big stretch for even the biggest of Comcast fanboys.

Cool. Does this mean we can all look forward to another round of thread derailment as you brag about having 2 hard drives in your POS Sony?

I know you're upset that you overpaid for that slow Sony but time will heal that wound. But better make it quick though, your battery will be dead in 40 minutes...that's if it doesn't catch fire first.

And to think, you could have had the vastly superior more reliable Macintosh running the world's best operating system for less money.
I paid less(remember) for a far superior machine!

My VAIO will still eat ANY MacBook Pro!
Get over it!
Sony VAIO batteries don't explode - the cheap Sony rejects that get sold to Apple & Dell do!
VAIOs get the Good batteries.

40 minutes? No, running full tilt, 2.2 hours.
Watching a 1080p Blu-ray DVD is not a problem.
Too bad your MBP can't do Blu-ray *OR* 1080p
Sorry!

Re: I swear!

2.2 hours?!? LMAO. Superior is a matter of opinion and ours differs. Your Sony doesn't impress me. But thanks for derailing the thread.

Re: I swear!

Caught your post before the edit, didn't I?

Yeah, 2.2 hours WITHOUT any battery life software enabled.
That's running Full On!

Don't care anyways... I paid less for more machine.

BTW, YOU derailed the thread, Thank YOU! LOL!

Dido, I don't understand it some times. I get the best service from comcast then I have ever had from any other service. That's 14 or so years of Internet service I have been getting. Some times I wonder if its just people with crap connections, that are stuck with company's like time Warner, or lumbering fools still sticking with DSL.

A lot of the company's comcast has bought out, where just trying to keep there heads above the grounds, allot of time it helps the small guy when a bigger company helps out. Hell One thing I am sure of is, the people who sold are not complaining!

Confusing buy-out.

Can someone explain to me the logic behind this purchase?

I'm starting to see a new fad: companies buying others out for absolutely no reason. It's almost at random, if you ask me; the equivalent of a pharmaceutical company buying out an ISP. Huh?

I'm serious -- what do Fandango and Comcast have to do with one another *in any way shape or form*? It's confusing.

Re: Confusing buy-out.

Comcast will use Fancast to tie movie ticket sales to OnDemand (i.e. watch trailer OnDemand, and then order tickets for theatre, downloading content, etc.) It makes pretty good sense. Comcast wants to get more involved in content and programming. That's why they made the joint venture with Sony on the MGM purchase, and why they tried to buy Disney. They are taking small steps to make an even more powerful cable and media company.

This is the way Comcast should expand

This continues to show that Comcast can certainly expand its business while the FCC enforces cable system ownership limitations.
