How Safe Would a .Safe Domain Really Be? F-Secure Urges ICANN to create financial domain Tuesday Apr 10 2007 11:09 EDT Security vendor F-Secure Corporation today issued a press release urging ICANN to create a .safe domain to be used by financial institutions. "While a .safe domain name won’t prevent phishing attacks, it will help banks and security providers to keep their customers safe," said F-Secure's Patrik Runald. "Banks need to take on some of the responsibility for protecting their customers and using a secure domain name such as .safe will give customers the reassurance they need when banking online." But really: what's in a name, and how safe would a .safe TLD really be? Does it magically make gullible users suddenly smarter? |

Dumb IdeaWe have way too many TLDs already.
This company makes the false assumption that banks are institutions that are inherently worthy of our trust. We all know that this is not even close to being true. Banks are among the worst offenders when it comes to protecting the privacy of their customers. If banks are held accountable for losses incurred by customers when they screw up, then this problem will disappear overnight. | |
