Agreement with EMI not exclusive to Apple
(old news - 02:58PM Sunday Apr 08 2007)
Tipped by McLovin See Profile
Computer World reports that Microsoft will soon sell digital music online without digital rights management (DRM) protection. According to the article, the EMI agreement with Apple was a non-exclusive agreement which Microsoft can take advantage of in order to meet consumer demands for the unprotected music that they desire. Will consumers be satisfied enough to pay the added cost to get the better quality?

Re: Yes.

Is all good. I just hope others follow soon. They finally gave up... although for a premium... but is all better than a less quality DRM for 99 cents.

how about NO DRM for the SAME price we're paying for DRM'd content no? WHY should we have to pay extra for something we should have gotten in the first place. while this is a step in the right direction theres still a distance to go yet.

Added cost for better quality?

This should be good. I can't wait to see the result - pay more than the CD for 192k instead of 128k? I'm not optimistic.

Re: Added cost for better quality?

Most people who buy from these services generally only buy the songs they like, not whole CD's. Usually only 1 or 2 songs max per cd for current pop artists. Collectors generally buy real CD's or get HQ rips from newsgroups.

Re: Added cost for better quality?

Yeah, most of the bands I listen to have enough good songs per CD to make the whole thing worth getting. I'll never buy digital music online until I can get a whole album for $10 in lossless format and no DRM, which will probably never happen.

Re: Added cost for better quality?

The legality is certainly questionable but as I've noted before, the payments (via visa/mastercard) to allofmp3 were formerly processed by ChronoPay, a genuine and well established Dutch company. They have ceased their agreement with allofmp3, likely because of legal harrassment from media companies, but not because of fraud.

As for the reputability, allofmp3 has been used for several years by many users. I've not once heard of a fraudulent credit card charge stemming from them (correct me if I am wrong).

Been using them for years here too. Never had any type of bad experience with them. I use a prepaid netspend card to buy music. Can't take what isn't there!

If it's the same deal with Apple the CD price is exactly the same. Only if you buy individual songs is there an increase in price.

Where Apple leads, Microsoft follows...Again

So I guess Jason Reindorp doesn't think Steve Jobs was "irresponsible, or at the very least naïve..." afterall.

Microsoft continues it's legacy of non-innovation.

What??? You have got to be kidding me. What is innovative about selling songs that a record company decides not to have DRM on? Give me a break. You are stretching. Why do you mac freaks turn everything into mac vs pc? I have pcs and I have macs I don't want to hear about my pc loving.

Bottom line though...I applaud EMI.

Re: Where Apple leads, Microsoft follows...Again

Keep reading that without DRM...there will be added cost for higher quality. So basically they all agree that till now they will selling us bad quality products...or DRM makes the product of less quality.

Anyway...DRM free music should be cheaper..since the cost of making the music DRM compliant is not there...hence the music should be cheaper. Or is it that the music company decided to throw the towel...& make more money from it

Actually when you think about it...... Ripping your own music whether it's 128 or 320 comes at the same cost and no DRM... maybe that model should be adapted?

Amen. Does it really matter who started it? I mean, someone had to be first. Besides, both Apple & MS carry a lot of clout.

Think about it: The best selling music device (iPod) coupled with an operating system that's on most of the world's PC's (Windows). That's a lot of potential sales just waiting for the right moment.

I pesonally have bucked the trend and bought a Creative Zen, but I can honestly say the main thing holding me back from buying digital music is DRM. After I pay for it, it's mine. And I play by the rules; my ripped CD's are for my own use. I do not make copies for anyone and I'd treat digital music downloads the same way. I'd venture to say most people would play fair also.

So I applaud MS, Apple, and EMI for taking the first steps. I'm ready to support this move with my music dollars if the dominoes start to fall.

Actually, it is where EMI leads, will other music labels follow. Is EMI only the first of the major labels to do this, and will the other labels follow suit. Or will EMI be the only one for the time being?

Re: Where Apple leads, Microsoft follows...Again

Problem is the record labels aren't really in competition with one another; meaning while they sell music they don't sell the same artists. EMI doesn't even have any artists in the Billboard Top 100. This could just be a publicity stunt to get attention to EMI artists.

And if it is so what. If it succeeds it will show to the music industry this increases sales.

Pay more for better quality?

Shouldn't the cost savings of eliminating DRM offset the cost of the better quality songs?

Its just a way to get an extra 30 cents out of our pockets per track. I don't buy the 'because it has DRM, quality has to be lower' arguement. I can put DRM on a 64kbps or 320kbps track.
only reason for lower quality is they dont want to pay for bandwidth required to host such files.

you guys get excited too easily. must be the brain washing

what about just buying the CD without DRM, support the artist, and screw MAC and MS and Rhasody and all the other wannabees

Vista will never be on my machines again. it's XP with a new SKIN and a way to screw with all the SHEEP

they just pushed me to Suse Linux on my existing rigs and a NEW MAC machine for the first time.

THANK YOU! that's why I'm buying 2 more licenses for XP.

Vista will not be on any of my machines again.

I wish serious software makers would start making more stuff for the Macs and Linux, cause I would swap my photo software suite to one or the other, so far though it's not enough.

I've tried crossoveroffice in Linux and that is too not ready for prime time for me. I've yet to see the Mac solution were it runs a copy of windows, need to see that in action before I plunk 2500.00+ for a Mac box.
