story category Qwest Sells Iowa On 'Franchise Reform'
Even though they have yet to solidify TV plan
(old news - 02:14PM Friday Mar 30 2007)
tags: business · telco · legislation · TVIP
Like Verizon and AT&T, Qwest has been lobbying state lawmakers hard to try to convince them that if they eliminate the local video franchise system, the public will see lower TV prices and broader deployment. Yet, in Iowa, Qwest is very close to getting their wishlist legislation passed, despite the fact that the telco (unlike AT&T and Verizon) hasn't decided how/if to deploy TV service. Qwest does currently offer limited fiber connectivity and IPTV, but primarily to more lucrative housing developments.

But that defeats the purpose of the bill which is getting away from the local communities requiring full build outs instead of just the areas with rich majority folks.

Re: IF...

No not if its done right. Right now potential customers outside of a city franchise cannot get service. With a State franchise everyone in the state should be covered. This should be required by any entity who wants to do business in the state (Telco or cable co or utopia co or muni co).

Would you care to share what specific objections you have after reading the bill, or is this simply another one of your usual kneejerk moments?

Have you even read the bill before passing judgement on it?

Nice attack.

I've read this and all of the other statewidde franchise "reform" bills. Few if any of them do much of anything for consumers, as they're designed primarily to legalize cherry picking (eliminate build-out requirements) and eliminate other profit draggers like providing local access.

User Marigolds offers up some excellent analysis of the Iowa bill here. The flaws with it are made very clear.

As we've discussed in the past, your primary interest is shilling for Qwest.

I quoted the bill that is the subject of this thread and story; the quoted portion directly contradicts a post in this thread.

You seem to have a pretty expansive definition of the word "troll"

Re: IF...

Enough. These dsl employee/cable employee fights in the news comments are obnoxious.

As are employees shilling for their employers, then attacking critics.

I'm going to be cracking down harder on both from here on.

It will never happen that, for the entire state, service coverage will be mandated.

Re: IF...

The way things are currently? True. But how did farmer Joe get a phone, or electricity? Mandate and subsidy was the way it was done. City franchises certainly won't make it happen.

Ridiculous. If they were required to offer service to every rural farmhouse in the state as a condition of offering service to anybody, they'd not be able to serve anybody and still make a profit.

It's a stupid argument, and I'm glad that they saw through it. As I understand it, the Iowa bill does have buildout requirements, but not the absurd notion of 100% availability.

We're not talking POTS or electricity here, only non-broadcast television; there's really no need for the government to get involved in offering a non-essential, luxury entertainment service beyond working out right-of-way issues.

Why?

Qwest is one of the worst telcos in the US. It's not like they are going to do something.

Why is that trolling?

This company can barely stay afloat. They have zero plans about delivering their own TV service and no FIOS-like deployment.

Their idea of TV service is to bundle DirecTV branded service.

I just hope a more capable company buys this area so we get better telco service and more competition. Yes I work for a local cable company but I would love to see FIOS in this area.

Re: Why?

Actually they do have a plan and no they haven't made it public yet. The company has made a big come back after the insider trading problems they had.Tv is coming in the next 2 years.

I don't know where you get your info but qwest has been busting its a** to turn a profit. There biggest flaw is they always deploy something after a competitor deploys something new and end up trying to play ketchup. Hopefully they will learn and start thinking ahead.

You seem pretty sure of yourself. Who owns the fiber your cable companys data runs on? Qwest and ATT think about that.

Wow

I like how the Media and reps think this will amount to much. The cities seem to feel like they are loosing money to satellite and this will help. (no fees) I think it will do very little. The high income neighborhoods that they intent to cherry pick already have cable,BB and DSL. Bringing in TV via the Bells will do little for the consumer nor even the Bells. They don't own the content.

In my opinion, the Bells will figure this out down the road. They are better off focusing on naked bandwidth, charging by the gig and letting others deal with the content hassle.
That said, there is a danger ahead for the consumer. EXCLUSIVE CONTENT ....I can see the cables or the Bells buying the rights for the entire season of football. In response, the other buys the entire rights to Basketball.
Now the consumer has to choose, or buy both. This whole thing could very well end up driving up costs for everyone and in the end, the consumer pays to play.

However, on the flip side....a cherry picker doesn't really have the market power or cash flow to play that game for awhile anyway. When this happens...and I think it will.... you will hear a big bang...it will be all the short sighted Bell folks over the past 10 years heads coming out of their a..... Fools are too late for TV. Go for the bandwidth..... skip content..... and others can serve the video. There are some real advantages to being a huge dumb pipe.

Regardless, lower prices for the consumer???? Please!
