Reports positive financial quarter....
(old news - 02:00PM Thursday Feb 08 2007)
tags: dsl · business · telco
Qwest today announced a largely positive earnings report that notes they added 165,000 DSL customers in the fourth quarter of last year. Qwest says they were helped by strong demand for their "Price for Life" promotion, which offers Qwest Choice DSL Deluxe (1.5 Mbps) and Qwest Choice DSL Premium (3-5 Mbps) customers a fixed price for life -- provided they sign a two year agreement (see our user opinions here). Of course, they should enjoy that cash while they have it: Qwest is in the process of exploring either a FTTH (like FiOS) network upgrade strategy or a VDSL solution (like U-Verse).

FTTH

VDSL is a bad Idea. I've experianced FIOS. Amazing is all I can say. I know all about VDSL. I used to work in BellSouth management.

Fios

FiOS is 1490nm of photon enhanced pleasure. There is no way that ANY copper can compete. No matter what the talking heads at the telcos say. Bpon today, Gpon tomorrow.
q. How are you going to compete with 1.2 gbps to the residence?

Re: Fios

You do know that one of the loudest telco talking heads is responsible for FiOS, right?

My God I was wrong!

I always thought that their was a sucker born every minute. It appears I was off by many orders of magnitude, assuming those 165,000 customers signed up in a minute or less.

I was getting 3 Mbps about six years ago; I feel for those in Qworst territory. At least they have a good IP backbone, for all the good it will do those 165,000 lifers...

Re: My God I was wrong!

It really depends on the specific circumstances. Specifically, if there any possibility of competition in the next two years? I signed up for Price for Life because I live out in the middle of nowhere. Land use regulations mean that there will be no appreciable development for at least the next ten years. Cable is miles away and Comcast has said that they will never expand out here and Qwest has no motivation to upgrade our RT to fiber given the small number of homes. A couple of WISPs have come and gone in this general area (none of which were able to service my house) at prices that were completely absurd. So, given my circumstances, the only reason not to sign up is if you think Qwest is going to lower their prices in the next two years or if you think you're going to move (I don't know if the contract is transferable to another residence).

Yes, it's transferable, and you don't incur the early disconnect penalty if you move to an area that is not served by Qwest High Speed Internet. The 'Life' part in price for life means you keep the same price for as long as you have the service. If you change speeds, however, and you have completed the 2 years, the price for the new service is not set for 'life', unless you make a new price for life agreement.

Why don't people get that not everyone is looking for the fastest downloads speeds.

These "suckers" are buying exactly the speed the need today. I have Qwest 1.5mb and I don't need any faster. I download from Itunes, play WOW and a few other online games, hook up my 360 for media downloads and I don't have problems with the speed. And I don't want to pay 52 a month through Comcast.

And I am also aware that in 2 years, when I need faster speed , Qwest will have their fiber to the node and I will get 15 to 20mb download at my house. At the least I will have 5 to 7 mb download as my neighborhood gets their Premier speed into my area. So I am just banking on the next couple of year and I will change my plan anyway.

Qwest is doing right by me and by the looks of their last year, I think a few more customers.

Sorry you don't have the opportunity to share in that.

Qwest strategy

While some users want their fttp NOW, most bandwidth users still don't care. Anyone notice how many dial-up customers Earthlink still has? Extrapolate that out to the other providers, and you will see there are still many millions of dial-up users, and they don't need fttp. I was reading a financial how to get yourself out of debt article the other day, and it RECOMMENDED switching back to dial-up on an $9.99 a month plan. As a result, telcos (excepting Verizon) have decided they can sit back and wait, get their infrastructure in place, get the bugs out of the TV service, and move to FTTP later, when deemed necessary.

One thing Dick mentioned is getting fiber to the node, and delivering service on existing copper. This sets you up beautifully for fttp in the future, 'cause those fiber nodes will be what fttp will be delivered from. And by that time, prices for the gear will have come down, and operating experience will have increased making the shift to fiber easier, cheaper and more productive.

Qwest is currently delivering tv in 2 formats, VDSL and FTTP in some new developments. Don't think for a minute that Qwest isn't following the numbers from these projects (DTV doesn't count in my mind). The bottom line is being watched very closely, and that data will be used to guide future decisions. So I say, (if anyone cares) give Qwest a chance. It appears the company has finally dug itself out of the hole it buried itself in, and I think that the future holds promise.

Flame away....

'Price For Life'

Now if they would do 'Price For Life' on VIDEO, that would be a true value.

qwest fibre? why even bother when they cap it soooooo low like it is everywhere. qwest fibre will NEVER be in the same league as Fios.

Price for life

No is that the life of the customer, life of the modem, life of the house, etc. I've learned a thing or two from TiVO and a "for life" deal isn't what it always sounds like.

Qwest Price For Life

What a deal. As soon as I signed a two year agreement my uploads dropped from 864+kbps to under 100 kbps. Mainly in the 80s.
