Being that they caused 'irreperable harm' and all...
(old news - 05:15PM Thursday Jan 25 2007)
tags: Video · Fileswapping · business
Fox's "piracy czar" has apparently subpoenaed YouTube for the identity of several users who have been uploading copies of "24" and "The Simpsons." The uploaded works are causing Fox "irreparable harm," proclaims the company's lawyers. Of course, such clips can actually help networks by hooking users who might have otherwise missed recent episodes, though it's pretty clear Fox wants users to do that via their official site, so you catch their sponsor's advertising.

Considering that BIG Copyright Infringement notice when you upload a video, what moron would upload that to YouTube? Google isn't about to get sued over some moron who apparently can rip a show and upload it to YouTube but not be able to read!

YouTube isn't the haven for copyright infringement anymore or did users forget Google bought them?

I don't know why they just don't put all the shows on YouTube with ads included.

Nice

This is what I get when I goto their "offical site"

»creative.myspace.com/VOD/support/vista.html

FOX Video on Demand does not currently support computers running Windows Vista operating system. The site will support Windows Vista in the near future.

And you wonder why people turn to other sources for content.

I wonder if that exe will run on my linux machine... Oh wait, it won't. So Fox is saying that I either watch their shows when they air them or I need to go buy a copy of Windows (and not the most recent version, 'cause that won't work) for $100+ if I want to see their shows.

Now, if I decide not to do that and instead turn to a pirated copy, do you really think that not having the episode on youtube is going to stop me? I don't. Especially considering I didn't even know they were on youtube in the first place. Well, at least not until they made a big stink about it.

"Whats up with that" is that NewsCorp, the parent of Fox, owns MySpace.

Re: Nice

That's crazy. Youtube works fine on Linux, I can't imagine what there is specifically in Vista that would stop the flash player from playing Youtube on Vista, unless they still haven't written flash to work on Vista properly.

You can't watch it either on a Mac. How nice...works only for some. How about something that "just works"? That of course is too much to ask a company with a lot of money to do such an easy task.

They have to make sure it is locked down properly.

It's disgusting, isn't it? If they weren't so afraid that people would stop watching their 720p broadcast, to see a stupid youtube 500 kbps clip, imagine how many more people would watch 24 on TV after seeing it on youtube.

The way to compete with a free service is to make a service that costs money, with better quality.

Why would I want to get the same thing for free, but lower quality and ad ridden? Because it's not "illegal"?

That's not good enough. Compete by offering quality, not by offering bullshit.

Get some accurate news...

The article you linked to left out some important details

"The "24" episodes in question actually appeared on YouTube before their primetime Jan. 14 premiere on the Fox broadcast network, which spread four hourlong episodes of the hit drama over two consecutive nights. Fox became aware that the episodes were on YouTube on Jan. 8, according to the subpoena."
-from the Hollywood reporter

In this case is not much different than Apple suing people for violating confidentiality agreements and releasing product information before the official launch. Even if it turns out the copies were provided to television critics, those individuals have to sign a document that states they will not let that copy of the television program be publicly released.

Uploaded before they aired....

I don't think they are looking for people who are just uploading '24' episodes per se. They are looking for the people that uploaded recent episodes THAT HADN'T EVEN AIRED YET.

Here is the link to the article on Reuters that Slashdot is referring to as well..

Yeah, the four hour extravaganza was available online a week before it was broadcast. Fox has a massive internal leak.

Not on that site it was not. The season six episodes were clearly taken from Fox Channel 25.

Sponsors

If they so worry about their sponsors then why dont they put them in the show. Big gay jack could be wearing a shirt that has a big sprint logo on the back while he is trying to find the bomb.

Tivo vs. Computer

Assuming I was receiving Fox via off-air antenna, I can put the show on my Tivo hard drive for free, but not my computer hard drive?

I missed something.
