New RFP hints at significant new plans...
(old news - 02:27PM Monday Jan 01 2007)
tags: Fiber · business · telco · TVIP
Qwest has been the least aggressive of the telcos when it comes to fiber deployment, offering capped fiber connections in a limited number of developments. In large part, it's due to the company's financial condition, which actually improved during 2006. A new RFP being issued by the company hints that they might be planning to expand its fiber and IPTV offerings. In the RFP, the company admits it "continues to be challenged to develop innovative, more cost effective solutions to meet ever changing market needs. Within the access environment, the ability to leverage the embedded base of copper and fiber plant to provide voice, data, and video services is critical."

Qwest Is To Late

I live in the Phoenix area and already getting 12/1 with cox. I think Qwest is to late to start thinking about this move. Cox has already captured the majority of the market here already. On the other hand if Verizon were to buy Qwest out and deploy FIOS here..Cox is doomed!

IMO, Qwest is indeed probably too late in Omaha and Phoenix, where Cox has taken away a very large percentage of business from Qwest over the years. In areas where the competition is Comcast, Midco, Bresnan, or someone else, Qwest probably has more time.

Re: Qwest Is To Late

Cox has taken significant business from Qwest in Phoenix, but Qwest still does pretty well there. Cox cable is significantly more expensive with only 512k upstream speed- as with pretty much everywhere else DSL competes on price instead of speed. If you're willing to make a 2 year commitment, Qwest's 7M/1M (or 7M/896k) service is still $8 cheaper than Cox's 7M/512k.

Yes, Cox has 12M/1M, but at $60 a month. The average user who just surfs the web, uses e-mail and downloads the occasional picture really has little need for 12M. Most users aren't as speed-obssesed as the majority on this forum, and will often opt for a 1.5M connection that costs half as much.

UTOPIA and others are a good reason

Although here on the Wasatch front in Utah, Qwest wins with or without UTOPIA since they paid for a law that says UTOPIA can only provide the line, other people (like Qwest) have to provide the actual service. Qwest actually wanted to ban UTOPIA altogether, but I understand (not known as a fact) they could/would not pay enough to make the politicians risk the people's furor.

You are posting in the wrong thread. The Utopia thread is here:

I would like to see Quest buy out Embarq...There just as horrible as Sprint DSL was. Here in Florida, Cox is the best choice here.

I wonder when the other telcos will be offering high speed internet, television over the lines (not satellite) like FIOS is?

Re: UTOPIA and others are a good reason

Can't say, I do not know what is going on the East Coast. maybe your area can get something like our UTOPIA and IProvo initiatives going out there, assuming they have not already bought the laws to prevent that from happening. That will get the corporations moving.

But beware, it is easy for the corporates to buy a law that makes it hard for a true people's/muni system to work, let the people do the work and the corporates are there to skin the gravy. And then to piously say, "We told you it would not work".

LOL... IMO, if it weren't for Cingular complicating things for BellSouth and Sprint buying Nextel, areas that were Sprint and are now Embarq -- and not just in Florida and the Carolinas -- would probably be part of BellSouth by now.

Once again, the bigger independents don't get it. The Baby Bells and many smaller independents are either doing TV now or are getting there, but Embarq, Windstream (not including the former Standard Telephone areas in north Georgia where they do traditional wired cable, albeit with old plant), CenturyTel, etc. are nowhere to be seen.

Florida is outside Qwest's 14 state territory. Not likely to happen.

Qwest and RFP's

If Qwest acted on even half the RFP's they've issued since buying US West, they'd have a nationwide FTTH network deployed to every household with every piece of content ever created available, on-demand in HD

Verizon needs get it over with already and buy Qwest.

Re: Qwest and RFP's

In our neck of the woods (Auburn WA) we are either Comcast or Qwest dialup, anything Qwest does if they stick around would open up other options for us. As it stands all I have is Comcast which gives them the power to do as they like with us. I am 8/768 and we watch them give people on the EastCoast 16/1 with a soon to be upgrade to 16/2 for the same price all for the simple reason...Verison Fios. if we dont like it here who do we have to turn to? I dont care who buys Qwest if anyone does I would just like to see some real things happen here. Seattle is also a big major city but seen as a small nothing little city why up in some little corner of nowhere. I have no issues of paying for what I get or use, I would just like to be seen as equal
