teamed up with Microsoft to offer wireless broadband service in Portland, Oregon. Metro-Fi provides
free 1Mbps (256kbps upstream) wireless broadband to a growing number of California cities, driven largely by ad-revenue. Microsoft brings
"locally relevant MSN content and services" to the party. Metro-Fi made the decision to switch from a fee-driven model to a free one amidst
considerable skepticism.
Metro-Fi today
announced that the first portion of their Portland Wi-Fi network has gone live. The free service is now available in areas of downtown Portland centered on Pioneer Courthouse Square, as well as much of the Buckman, Lloyd and Kerns neighborhoods. As we've
reported, there have been some complaints about the quality of the free service among users of the network in Foster City, California.
