In select downtown areas...

Free Wi-Fi provider Metro-Fi has teamed up with Microsoft to offer wireless broadband service in Portland, Oregon. Metro-Fi provides free 1Mbps (256kbps upstream) wireless broadband to a growing number of California cities, driven largely by ad-revenue. Microsoft brings "locally relevant MSN content and services" to the party. Metro-Fi made the decision to switch from a fee-driven model to a free one amidst considerable skepticism.

Metro-Fi today announced that the first portion of their Portland Wi-Fi network has gone live. The free service is now available in areas of downtown Portland centered on Pioneer Courthouse Square, as well as much of the Buckman, Lloyd and Kerns neighborhoods. As we've reported, there have been some complaints about the quality of the free service among users of the network in Foster City, California.

Only a small area

That's only a small chunk of the city. I have my DSL at home, but if this actually gets off the ground with some reliability for my area, I just might dump the DSL.

But I won't hold my breath until then.

Sweet

This is great

Sure it's only in a few spots right now, but they hope to expand to a much larger area by next year. I cant wait to logon next time I'm downtown!

Would rather have 'truly free'...

...like the Portland-area nonprofit Personal Telco. But until PT can get universal service, I'll settle for this ad-sponsored system.

According to The Oregonian newspaper, coverage in the actual Downtown core should be decent as long as you're not in a skyscraper, and coverage on the business/residential district just to the East of downtown should be pretty good. (About 3 square miles / 1000 square blocks of nearly universal coverage.)

Free Wi-Fi in Vancouver's Living Room

Here in Vancouver we've had free Wi-Fi up and running for awhile. The location is at Esther Short Park in Downtown Vancouver. Other areas of the city. Will soon become Wi-Fi hotspots.
