Exhausted, nauseous and sleepless....
(old news - 05:26PM Monday Nov 27 2006)
tags: wireless · Oddities
Despite a lack of any compelling scientific evidence that Wi-Fi causes health problems, the stories of people claiming negative health effects keep rolling in. Techdirt points to the story of one UK woman who claims her home wireless router made her sick. The woman claims that Wi-Fi signals leave her exhausted, nauseous and sleepless. She also claims she can immediately detect if they are present the second she enters a room. Techdirt suggests she use anti-electromagnetic radiation cream.

I agree, as much as one can to the sound of air being sarcastically exhaled through closed lips... Pffftt... A walking Wi-Fi finder, soon she'll be on sale too!

No, in all seriousness, this is ludicrous. I bet she's the type that also doesn't stand near an on microwave oven, wears tinfoil, and drives a 1969 Lincoln Continental (because that's the last model before they started using evil computers to do fuel/air mixture automation).

Re: Pffft

LOL,
in her defence, if the power supply is making a high pitched noise, it can make you feel nauseous and can cause head aches. Some of these high pitched sounds we can't always hear and it could be easy to blame the radio waves instead.

My aunt has a really old alarm system that runs on ultrasounds instead of the modern infrared detectors. I'm the only person that feels nauseous as soon as I pass through her hallway where she has it installed. But the Wifi.... I don't know, I hope she doesn't own a cell phone!?!?!

How can you say that? Every person on Earth is like a snow flake. Nobody is the same verbatim. I have no doubt that what she says is true. I can feel the radiation from a cell phone when I am holding it as an example. Open your mind!

Re: Yak yak yak! Bla bla blah!

Every person is different therefore what affects one person MAY NOT affect another. Just because you can not feel a cell phone's radiation when the phone is in use doesn't mean that this is the way it is for everyone. When my cell phone is in use any part of my body that is in contact with it or very near to it gets hot from the radiation the cell phone puts out. The same goes for microwave ovens. If I'm close to one in use I can feel the radiation emanating from it. In fact, there is a video floating around the Internet somewhere where two Russian guys did a test on cell phone radiation with an egg. Google that and see what you come up with. Maybe then your mind will open up to new possibilities. Good luck.

Re: Yak yak yak! Bla bla blah!

(1) Never trust Russian newspapers.
(2) Cellphones -do- emit radiation. RF radiation. And that RF radiation is not powerful enough to penetrate tinfoil,
I'd suggest a new tinfoil hat if you are so inclined.
(3) Microwave ovens emit RF radiation approx 1000 times more powerful than cellphones do. But only -inside- a metal box that has been designed not to "leak", in other words, what goes on in the box, stays in the box.
If you can "feel" a microwave oven in use by standing nearby in the same room, either the oven has a defective seal (possible) or you have grown a new sensory organ capable of detecting millimeter wavelength radio transmissions. Welcome, Space Brother! I bow to your obviously superior adaptation of the human genetic code.

You bring some interesting points but fail to explain why my hand/ear/leg or whatever comes into contact with a cell phone that's in use, I can feel getting warm. Also, don't you think it's possible that some people are more or less sensitive to stimuli than others? Such as people who walk on fire and walk on water. I think it's important here to keep your mind open to possibilities that go beyond what your eye can see. It doesn't really matter to me that you don't believe in what you can not see or quantify scientifically, what concerns me is the tunnel vision so many people have. At one time in our history it was believed that the world was flat and people who believed it was round were ridiculed and called weird. As it turns out, the world IS round. Time will show that cell phones are not as safe as you think they are.

Re: Yak yak yak! Bla bla blah!

I'm not at all denying you may think you have the ability to sense the radiation but I do have to fill you in on a fairly well known secret (read: fact). Cell phones do in fact get warm when in use. Your hand (which adds to the heat), your ear (Which adds to the heat) and your leg (which adds to the heat) are all functioning within normal parameters. These are all normal sensations people have when using a cell phone. I don't see where anything you have described is any different from anyone else.

They are small devices who generate quite a bit of power within themselves, so there's more than enough reason for them to "heat up". The fact that you feel this "heat" doesn't mean you can feel or sense the radiation. Unless of course we're missing something....

Wait, you seem to be confusing urban legends with factual evidence. We are not talking about urban legends here.
No walking on fire or water. By your reasoning, fire is a health concern and we should not expose ourselves directly to it. So is water, we could actually drown. -UNSAFE!!-
-well duh--
There is no factual evidence that cellphones can cause illness of any kind, excluding chemical poisoning caused by actually ingesting the cellphone and it's battery.
You seem to believe that since microwave ovens make water hot, cellphones do the same thing since they use the same range of microwave frequencies.
False analogy.
The woman in the article claimed the same things, but I have not seen any evidence that there were double blind tests done to confirm her self-diagnosis. In other words, she -believes- the wifi makes her sick, so that justifies her attack on the technology.
Check the source. It's England, these are the same folks who supposedly witnessed "spontaneous combustion" of people. (I think they tried to blame microwaves for that as well...)(something about a Russian death ray)
************************************************************
I've come to the conclusion that people in England are easily lied to, at least in the tabloids. Meh, it sells newspapers. And my personal opinion is that any newspaper that has naked girls on page three -IS NOT A VALID NEWSPAPER- it's a sensationalist tabloid designed to excite it's readers.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but don't cellphones range from 850MHz to 1900MHZ (2400 MHz for my T-Mobile Wi-Fi phone), and microwaves run at MUCH HIGHER frequencies?

No, a standard microwave oven uses 2400MHz, just like Wifi and cordless phones. But, wifi broadcasts using milliwatts of power, where a powerful microwave oven is "broadcasting" over a thousand watts.

Re: Yak yak yak! Bla bla blah!

That's exactly my point. I've NEVER seen anyone walk on water... so why should I believe it's even possible? Millions of people think it's already happened. Just because I have not walked on water myself doesn't mean that I can't or that you can't. Just because you can not feel your cell phone's radiation doesn't mean other people will not be able to feel it. All people are like snow flakes, each person is very unique with their own special strengths and weakness'.

FekLar

@execulink.com

All electronic devices and power sources heat up when in use. As the electricity flows through the phone's electronics, the circuits will give off heat. Also, a battery will give off heat as it generates electricity through chemical reaction. Unless the phone's a major power hog, the most heat will be put out by the battery as it drains. That's probably the heat source you're feeling.

The signal from a cell phone is an oscillating microwave transmission, so it might theoretically induce some water molecule oscillation, but it's not a lot of power to shove around water molecules. Any heat generated (and I doubt it'd even be 1 degree Celsius) would be masked by what's put out by the battery's chemical reaction and the electricity flowing through the phone as it overcomes the resistance of the circuits.

Conrad

@imotech.ca

i agree she could be sensing it , myself i can hear the electronic hum from any electrical device. Most people can't doesn't mean it isn't there. Wireless router communicate by sending a signal that can be translated by a wireless card , why can't it be detected by someone everything affects people differently.

I have a minimum of eight wireless access points running in my house at any given time (partly for covering the entirety of the property and partly because I am using a WDS configuration to preclude the running of ethernet to difficult locations), I have suffered no ill effects from this equipment. Further, most of them are Linksys access points running third-party firmware...with boosted output power.

In a particular room? I'm sorry, but my ONE wi-fi router gives out an EXCELLENT signal in EVERY room of my house. If she only "feels" sick when she is in the same room "where there is wi-fi," then her problem is psychological, not physical.

She is "getting sick" because she "thinks" there is wi-fi there; not because it is actually there. I bet she doesn't get sick in Starbucks.

Do an investigation.......

If she has any cordless phones in the house, uses a cell phone or has a microwave, then something is fishy about her story.

Two quotes from the article:

quote:
Cell phones, wi-fi, computers and a plethora of things continuiously emit signals in the same frequency band. So it would be a pretty good trick for someone to be able to detect and discriminate these signals without sophisticated test equipment.

quote:
The electromagnetic fields in your home, due to it's internal wiring, is much larger and more powerful than anything your consumer wi-fi electronics is capable of creating and the same is true for your computer monitor and or television set.

What a load of bunk!

This lady is full of it. If Wi-fi is really irritating her, just turn it off. No need to scrap good equipment. And if this lady is that sensitive to be able to know when it is in a place, they should set up an experiment to where she can't see if the wireless is on and see if she complains.

Re: HAHA

Not knowing exactly what Irtc did with his microwave, I know that interlock switches are easy to defeat, like the switch on your clothes washer or car door. Push the switch in and VIOLA! the device still works with the door open/missing!

On the other hand, I think that 1000+ watts (like most modern microwave ovens) of power is still too much radiation. I would never run a microwave oven with the door missing, although I have no problems with cell phones or wi-fi.

One or two or even four watts (Cb radio, anyone? hell, it's been around longer than anything else we use in our homes) is ok, but 1000 watts is a little too much for me.
