Complaining About Free Wi-Fi
Metro-Fi Foster City network complaints
(old news - 02:20PM Thursday Nov 23 2006)
tags: wireless
The Contra Costa Times says users are complaining about the performance of the recently launched wireless network built by Metro-Fi in Foster City, California. Metro-Fi not long ago decided to ditch the monthly pay model, and instead started offering free, ad-driven wireless broadband. They offer service in a handful of California cities, and recently won the contract to provide free Wi-Fi to Portland, Oregon. Complaints over free service are all the rage lately; residents of Mountain View California, which is soaked in free Wi-Fi thanks to Google, have been similarly vocal about network shortcomings.

Monthly Fee?

I'm not say that everything that is free is bad, but why are these residents complaining? Perhaps they should stop complaining and try and see how they can work with the companies to address the network issues and try to find a low-cost resolution that everyone will be happy with. Or are they happy with it because it's free and complaining because it's low quality?

Re: Monthly Fee?

I couldn't agree more.... you have free Wi-Fi and bitch about it... Hello, it just got up and running and the network guys will tweek it. Some of us would die for some sweet spots, but we'll have to settle for lukewarm spots for the time being. Shut up and be grateful for what you have.... after all it is Thanksgiving.

WiFi problems just nature of the beast

It was designed for hotspots and private residences, and was never meant to scale up to citywide wireless coverage. All the citywide roll-outs are finding out that getting good coverage and speeds is near impossible unless an area is blanketed with huge numbers of APs. And then the cost and maintenance issues start to make free roll-outs not financially feasible. Mobile Wimax anyone?? Or faster 3g/4g wireless coming soon?

How do they prevent you from ditching the ads?

Are the ads only there if you use their customized browser? What if you use a wireless access point feeding into the WAN port of your own router, how would they make ads appear on regular browsers on other computers attached to the router?

Can we say Proxy server I am not sure how they do it, but that is one way....

Preventing the ads is trivial. There isn't a custom metrofi browser-- you use your standard web browser (ie/ff). I believe that metrofi just injects a piece of html or javascript into each pageload

Free doesnt mean without consequence.....

Free municipal or citywide wifi networks will have poor coverage. (period) But an often overlooked factor is that once a city deploys a mesh network all other existing wifi providers (private businesses) will be pushed out or hampered severely because of interference and noise in the already crowded spectrum. So the net effect will be few people who once received a quality paid for service will be replaced by the many who now get free poor/nonexistent service. Removing competition and choices from consumers to a poor quality government or private "free" service will only add to the cable and telco stranglehold on the marketplace as these city wifi networks become dinosaurs (a la EVDO/HSPDA). The private wifi firms will shrink away and will not come back. Even if they planned migration to better technology (WiMax) and increases in service offerings, they still cannot compete with free.

The more I watch this debacle unfold the more I laugh at the "experts" (read:vendors) who told cities that this was even feasible. Tropos is making a killing ($4,000) off of $200 hardware and a slick firmware revision as the cities line up to provide their constituencies "hope" in the form of broadband.

BTW- I have a bridge for sale.....

It's FREE, quit your whining

I have no sympathy for these cry babies. No matter what the "problems" they're having, Internet access isn't a birthright.

Don't like it? Go somewhere else.

I see no one who has commented up to this point bothered to read the article. NOWHERE in the piece is the word "complained" used by the writer. It's just the person who wrote the piece for this forum who used the word "complained" to describe user issues. The article isn't even about people "complaining" about anything.

If you bother to read the actual article then you'll see that exactly ONE person had an opinion regarding the free wi-fi in the city, and that was to say that there was connectivity issues. The rest of the article details just the fact that free wi-fi "violates" business principles and that city workers will be able to communicate with each other better using the service.

Heehee...so true! Frankly, if it works long-term, GREAT! If it does not...the city is not out much, if any capital expenses, and users still have other options, so where's the beef? As far as signal "over-riding"...duh...block out the connections that you don't want...as that guy in the article did...I have that "issue" here where I live! There are at least half a dozen strong networks that my wife's laptop will "switch to" so I fixed that...easy enough to do!

I Read It ! I Read It !

lol

And what I read was this, which is completely contradictory to this thread title. The statement is:

Haas said his company is getting good feedback from Foster City residents, and said that, of course, there will be some who experience problems. Those who have trouble getting a signal, he said, are probably more than 300 feet from the nearest equipment and need to buy a low-cost wireless modem.

From "good feedback" to "complaints" in just one repost! That's a hell of a slant on news distribution ! Surely degrades forum reputation.

Re: RTFM

Isn't that so/too often the case? Posters read the lead-in and skip the linked article to post a purely emotional response to an issue. That may help explain the rampant subject-verb agreement problems within the posts, but it doesn't help with WTF BBR editors are thinking when they allow junk lead-ins.

Anyway, I read the article up to this point:

"This week, the company announced that it is partnering with Microsoft to offer free Wi-Fi in Portland, and MetroFi CEO Chuck Haas said that partnership alone should provide some credibility to skeptics."

and bailed out.

Does anyone run P2P over MetroFi?

Just wonder if anyone start a P2P on MetroFi, how's the performance?

Re: IT'S FREE....

This is why customer service is over-rated especially in call centers. Customer will complain no matter how muich they are paying even if it's free.
