AOL CEO Jim Miller was given the task of turning the nation's largest dial-up ISP into a broadband and advertising powerhouse. His plan, after numerous missteps, ultimately became offering AOL content for free, getting out of the broadband business and suffering through the slow bleeding of subscribers until ad revenue ramped up. He helped show a number of other execs the door during that time, such as Lisa Hook, who in a 2002 interview called broadband "a side issue." She's since moved on to Sunrocket.

Now Miller himself has been shown the door, according to the Washington Post.

"Rarely do you come into an organization with as many challenges as AOL faced when I arrived and then have the great satisfaction of putting it on sound footing," Miller tells the Post. He's being replaced by NBC Universal executive Randy Falco, who AOL hopes will aid the company's transition from ISP to ad-driven media portal.
