HDNet CEO and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban recently proclaimed that anyone who bought YouTube was a "moron." Cuban insisted that YouTube would never survive under a wave of lawsuits from owners of copyrighted material. Cuban didn't know that future owner Google was already working on that by giving the music industry an ownership stake and signing major redistribution deals with Hollywood studios.

While YouTube does face legal obstacles, Cuban, who is on the record as stating broadband video is "going nowhere," was more interested in scaring advertisers and investors away from a competitor than offering honest insight. With business relationships at stake, Cuban has traditionally acted as a mouthpiece for the Cable and broadcast industry, most recently regurgitating their pitch for a two-tiered Internet (a push that has led to the net-neutrality debate).

Since Cuban's YouTube implosion scenario has thus far failed to materialize, he's apparently going to nudge it along. Cuban is considering buying an independent news agency that's suing the video-sharing site for copyright violations. Independent photojournalist Robert Tur is suing YouTube for profiting off of his work but likely lacks the financial muscle to take it all the way.

"The only reason [YouTube] hasn't been sued yet is because there is nobody with big money to sue," recently stated Cuban. He's apparently going to fix that by lending his financial support to Tur. Mark Cuban, it would seem, is heading to war.
