Cisco teams up with the Oakland A's
(old news - 09:10AM Friday Nov 10 2006)
Tipped by TK Junk Mail See Profile
"If Cisco Systems Inc. has its way, the Oakland Athletics' new ballpark in Fremont will be the stadium of the future," reports the Associated Press. In a plan demonstrating the possibilities, Cisco showed a stadium where fans viewed instant replays via Wi-Fi enabled laptops, ads were tailored to every customer and electronic tickets were stored on cell phones. Cisco and the A's are set to announce details of a 32,000 to 35,000 seat ballpark next Tuesday. Or, you could stay home and watch games via broadband.

What?!

if tickets are stored on the cell phone, can the scalper just SMS it to me?

Why would someone take their laptop to a ball game?? If ANYTHING, get something like Nextel's FanView.

Re: What?!

just one more ridiculous idea. Internet everywhere? You can watch baseball at the game on wi-fi but not on the net at a coffee shop elsewhere except overseas? Another great idea.

Re: What?!

how stupid I wouldn't lug my laptop or want to watch on my cell phone I paid the money to see the game with my own two eyes NOT though a device!!

plus your side by side with a lot of other fans you'd have no room to whip out your laptop.

just a dumb idea.

Re: What?!

This is crazy. At my school (RPI, which has plenty of techies) we have wireless in our hockey arena(its the big sport at my school) for conventions and other purposes. I have only once, ever seen a person using it at a game. No one wants to be using the internet while at a game, they want to watch the game.

Re: What?!

the 5th 3rd Stadium in Toledo Ohio has Wireless Internet throughout it. They use it for various things though. It was on the news not too long ago (www.wtol.com CBS News station here).

That seems like the way to do it indeed. Besides there is that rental fee, that would seem all the reason needed ;(

Would you really want to have your laptop open for replays while you (and those next to you!) enjoy a beer and hotdog during a grand slam ?!?

When everyone stands up to see the action in front of you i guess you can still see it on your laptop (then why are you there in person). Or forget and stand-up anyway...your laptop is drop-proof right?

It's one thing to say sorry you spilled on someone...spilling a beer or coke on their laptop is gonna be a bit tougher :O

That Fanview is pretty cool. I like to take a laptop to baseball games to view stats, and bs in between innings on irc. I also watch other games on mlb.com I use it at pacbell/sbc/att park to root AGAINST the Giants

wow

there have been rumors for years that the a's are going to be going to be in fremont, But wow this is amazing. One thing that i know for sure is if this were to happen housing prices in fremont are going to go up even more than they already are. A lot of money has to be invested to upgrade the infrastructure. Such as maybe extending bart upgrading interstates 880 and 680. As well as doing a lot of upgrading of the warm springs area since in my opinion the added traffic would certainly bog down many of the narrow streets that are down there.

Yawn. This idea is so 1997.

I seem to remember the San Francisco Giants installing wireless at their new park, as well as PDA beaming kiosks. Does anyone use these services? No.

ads were tailored to every customer

So they are seeing $$$ for targeted ads.

Well target this. I refuse to give up any type of personal information just to receive targeted ads.

The whole thing is just stupid, and I am a techno geek.

possible problems

what if you have a ticket stored on your cell phone and it dies while your waiting in line at the game? what if you drop you cell phone and it gets damaged? at least with an actual ticket, that could never happen

Re: possible problems

You could drop your paper ticket and it could blow away in the wind. I've seen it happen. I would hope it's more rare that someone would drop their cellphone and the impact would render the phone useless.

Skip work

Hope they also have free wifi. But the only good thing about this is that people can skip work to see a ball game and still access the network.

That area of Fremont already has one of the biggest bottlenecks to be found anywhere in the bayarea. You also get stuck there on the weekends.

Glad I moved away from Fremont a few months ago. Traffic galore.

The City of Fremont will probably let them develop without upgrades to the traffic infrastructure...as usual.

Now the traffic back-ups to get off on Warm Springs or Auto Mall Parkway will go all the way around the bay...
