Incumbent busy crafting its own content
(old news - 01:56PM Tuesday Nov 07 2006)
tags: Video · business · cable · content
While many incumbents have outsourced content, Comcast has been intent on generating that content themselves. This week, the company launched the public beta of Ziddio, a user-generated video portal the company hopes will be as popular as YouTube. A "hard launch" for the website is expected in December, according to MediaWeek. Comcast is also planning a video/music store, which is rumored to be accessible via either cable box or PC under the "AnyPlay" brand.

Another failed service

Sounds like this one is going to fail just like the rest of them... O well, I give it to Comcast for trying. (Wait, no I don't, the money they are putting into this could go into upgrading my speeds instead of cherry-picking who gets the new 16/1...)

Re: Another failed service

But, if they didn't cherrypick, how could they afford their ill-conceived attempts at luring people into a product they have no need for?

You mean like YouTube? It's called competition. Something here that most give lip service too. But if a major telco or cable company actually has a product to try and compete with the FAVORED site of the month, then it isn't competition, but predation.

Re: Another failed service

You misunderstand--it isn't specifically that customers do not want said service, but rather that they do not want said service in slapshod terms. Any offering by Comcast (or, usually any other given ISP) is a horrible alternative to anything the content providers have, and will, offer.

So, yes. Luring customers into a cheap knock-off isn't anything they want or need, and the money is better spent on less ill-fated debacles.

hmm

If Comcast offer's some extreme bandwidth to Comcast customer's it could make profit. Where if you use their sites you get 35Mbs downstream. Would be a great way to bring tv to the net.

Amen to that. I have no use for Comcast's content, email servers, news servers, or any of their other services which are unrelated to their being a big dumb pipe for my Internet access. I'd gladly pick a "no frills" package if they offered one for less than what I am paying now.

Every one thought YouTube was c**p too untill $1.65 BILLION came along. WHO watches the most TV? Probably the ones who want to see their video clip on TV!

Comcast Speed

To comment on those saying Comcast is wasting money on this and could put it to better use like getting more speed out to ya.

I don't know how long you have had Comcast but in my 5+ years with them, I have gotten 2 or 3 speed bumps at no additional cost. Wanting more is fine, but don't forget what they have done so far. It might not all be good, but the good outweighs the bad I'm sure. If not, I would hope you would search for a new ISP if the bad outweighed the good. I would.

sheesh

I'm not sure whats worse.

The greedy users that rather have nothing available for users to use and want their speed increased at its expense, the paranoid tin foil hat crew that assumes because comcast offers a competing product that they'll intentionally degrade access to competitions sites, or the fact dadkins wants to watch on demand porn from his PC instead of moving enough to see his TV.

So its similar to youtube. Big deal. How well will it do? Depends on how hard people want to try for prizes and the bragging rights of making it on TV. I personally think it has a good chance of success. Think of all the talentless hacks from American idol who helped make the show an insane success.
