Speculation on capabilities
(old news - 09:17AM Sunday Oct 22 2006)
Apple filed for a Trademark on the term "iPhone" earlier this week . Back in March our Mac forum was buzzing about Apple's possible venture into the phone market. Fast forward to today where it is reported that the iPhone is just around the corner. There will be two phones. Both will have music capabilities and may debut at January's Macworld Expo trade show.

Good for Apple but...

I'd rather just settle for a cellphone that is simple: no music, no video, no camera, no games.
Something that is black, solid, easy to read (in glare), easy to access (raised buttons), no delicated port/jack covers to finagle with, doesn't pickup face oils, has long standby and small enough to fit a shirt pocket (and textured so it doesn't slide out of every storage place, but not need an ugly or cumbersome case). Yes, it better have Bluetooth (many states have handsfree law, and more car makers are adapting..finally).

I recal Moto's first Flip phone that has the RED LCD display. I hint that Motorola has the sale potention for a "Retro" phone with upgraded tech (better reception, battery life, hinges, sound...)

Don't get me wrong, I do think there is need for a phone that can do it all (Windows OS or even Mac OS, contacts, email, web,...) but I've gathered that many folks just want a plain o'l cellphone. Yes?

Re: Good for Apple but...

Get a Nextel. Mine has gone through hell when I worked in construction, meaning it fell off roofs, got covered in thick roof paint, dust all over and the outer case looks horrible. But that phone is still working and it's not even military grade.

Mine is the i710, I heard the i560 is way more reliable.

By the way a RED LCD display would be awesome, include orange as well.

And everyone sounds like a robot. You are in Miami which is one of the worst Nextel markets..... "Call Failed, system busy" "Please try again", "User Busy in A03", etc, etc

People still sound like robots however, unless you had a nice tech hack the phone for you (if you ever need service go to Advance Radio Systems they are on NW 87 Ave past NW 12 or so...)

I know their coverage is pitiful in New York as I can NEVER reach my friend who lives in the area. Every single time I call him it's the same old "ring three times and go to voicemail" routine while he never gets a single ring on his end. That or the "please hold while the Nextel subscriber you are trying to reach is located" -- which, of course, their system is NEVER able to do.

To sum it all up, my friend is absolutely disgusted with them and has been looking forward to Nov. 2nd when his contract is set to expire with great anticipation. He's been talking about switching to Verizon which apparently many of his friends (including myself) have and which has much better coverage than Nextel in pretty much any part of the country.

Re: Good for Apple but...

I know your not lying because I heard of similar stories. But when the time comes and I head to NY I would see how the coverage is there. I don't do business with Verizon even if FIOS did come to my area.

I drove around most of Florida and always had good ignal but I am not going to compare nextel with verizon since that would only lead a flame war between people here.

Re: Good for Apple but...

Well there are a few things to keep in mind about NEXTEL. Right now for instance they are in the middle of the re-banding effort in which they're moving to different ESMR spectrum and getting away from Public Safety Radio frequencies to eliminate interference. While this is happening (its going on nationwide now I believe), NEXTEL effectively loses 25% of their capacity as they have to vacate channels and wait for Public Safety to relocate to them and vacate the other channels for NEXTEL to move to them. During this time they've turned WiDEN off pretty much everywhere, and they're also using data channels for voice in the interim, meaning iDEN data just got even slower. Re-banding has created a mess. When its all said and done things should improve though.

System Busy, Call Failed, etc are all indicative of major congestion problems, obviously. You may notice them adding 900MHz channels to alleviate congestion but its my understanding that these 900MHz channels are only being used for interconnect calls at this time. A3 User Busy In Data is just what it means, its not a system issue it means whoever you're trying to Direct Connect is using the web or sending/receiving a text or MMS message. Also when you attempt to call somebody and receive the "Please hold while the NEXTEL subscriber you are trying to reach is located," one of four things has happened:

1. Their phone did not respond when the system tried to page it that it had an incoming phone call. As a result the iDEN network will page all the cell sites in a radius around the site where your phone was last known to be registered, instructing it to make contact with the system immediately.
2. The user is on a Direct Connect call. If this is the case, then the system knows where the customer you are trying to call is. It is simply stalling you in the hope that the dispatch (Direct Connect) session will time out (it times out after 6 seconds of inactivity) and it can page the phone to inform it that it has an incoming interconnect call.
3. The user is browsing the web or sending/receiving a message. If this is happening, again the system knows where the phone it, but it is simply stalling in the hope that a break in the data action will allow it to page the phone and inform it that it has an incoming call.
4. The cell site is too busy and has no free channels to use for a voice call. In this situation the message is simply played to stall the user in the hope that a channel will become available in which to complete the call.

At this point in time, iDEN cannot have an active voice and data session going at the same time. I don't believe CDMA can either, however I think UMTS/HSDPA can.

I am still convinced the merger with sprint caused all their problems. their service was great up until that point. It was so bad that i had to switch carriers.

Yes, Yes, Verizon is where it is at! Cingular Claims to be the best, but surely not here in Tennessee, Dropped calls All Around! Verizon Works Wherever I go, and works Great when I travel too! I agree NexTel Sux!!

Except for the camera part, I agree with you. Having a photo capability all the time since I always carry a cellphone anyway is a nice feature. But like you, I find all the other capabilities useless.

Re: Good for Apple but...

My biggest complain is the camera. I can't have one at work, so need a good phone with no camera and those don't seem to exist. Only the bottom of the barrel of each manufacture leaves out the phone.

I don't need a MP3 player, a camera (sucks anyway), a FM receiver, or the rest of that crap.

All I want is a dam phone that gets a strong signal and has 5-7 hrs of battery life.

If they had't added all that crap to my phone, I bet my battery life would be 3 times as good.

If you don't use that crap, it doesn't affect battery life. Pretty simple.

It's also funny to hear the same people (not necessarily the OP) complain about high tech phones because they don't need it but will cuss up a storm because their 8mbit connection isn't enough. Guess what, most people dont need 100mbit connections either.

Yes they do. If you do anything that requires downloading of anything, which of course is everything, you need all the speed you can get.

Who want a I-tunes store on there phone when that $0.99 song turns into a $5-$6 data bill.

Re: Good for Apple but...

The best idea I would think would be if you were to just load the songs from your computer to your phone or if Verizon or Cingular offered a monthly data subscription to the iTS such that you paid something like $4.99/mo. for the bandwidth and then paid Apple $0.99 for each song... that sort of thing works with text messages and existing music stores I don't see why iTunes would be any different.

@rr.com

Ive got to dissagree with you here. Most people love having cellphones that can take pictures, and likewise, most people love being able to send text messages. There are two essential functions that you couldn't take out of cellphones today.

So I'm pretty sure, most people would not want just a plain old cellphone that does nothing but calls. Needs to be able to take pictures and send text messages as well.

Should be interesting

It's simply a phone for the nitch market such as Helix. It is designed and will be marketed for those who want the features that this phone will offer, which will be the 15-30 something crowd. I am sure that the phone will have features that are far superior to anything that is currently available right now. Camera quality on phones is alot better than the VGA crap that currently dominates the market, I have a Samsung T809 with a 1.3 mp cam and it ROCKS, there are a few cams that have upwards of that. If you are working on a construction site like the person above does, then I really don't think a fashion phone from Apple is the wisiest of choices. I can't wait til it comes out because apple tends to surprise people and unveil products that are both cool and useful.

I'd buy it

If it was sold at a fair price, has iPod like controls, I'd buy it. Having a clickwheel on a phone would make browsing through contacts a breeze. Just please include T9 or something, and do not make me depend on a clickwheel to dial numbers or text.
