Music Industry Holds Stake in YouTube
Death of video portal greatly exaggerated?

Last month, HDNet chief and cable industry mouthpiece Mark Cuban attempted to scare investors and advertisers away from YouTube. According to Cuban, anyone who purchased the company was a "moron", since the company would soon be sued into oblivion by the entertainment industry for sharing their content illegally. Cuban has traditionally laughed at broadband as a video distribution medium, proclaiming it will never take off.

Several weeks later finds YouTube now under the ownership of Google, with plans to employ new copyrighted file filtering technology. What's more, YouTube is thus far being excluded from lawsuits filed against smaller video-sharing sites - and it's not simply because of distribution deals.

The NY Times breaks the story today of how three of the four major entertainment cartels not only struck distribution deals with YouTube, they took a partial ownership stake, and stand to collectively benefit to the tune of $50 million.

I make millions...

Selling hand-soap ads that run next to videos of dancing penguins wearing pants. What do you do?

Edit:

Scratch that. Technically I make millions watching others sell hand-soap ads that run next to videos of dancing penguins wearing pants.

Re: I make millions...

I love YouTube and hope it survives in it's current model, but anyone with a clue will see that they're one revolutionary site away from becoming a write-off for Google.

Props to Google for having the guts to take this big a risk, myself I couldn't do it and see Cuban's logic for this. Tax write-off or not it's hard to go sleep at night if you lose a billion and a half.

Big business will win in the end; they always do

This is just another example of how big business will win in the end. YouTube the big darling of the "ALWAYS FREE" set has been co-opted and will return big profits to Google, the RIAA companies, and the MPAA companies. And advertising has now totally dominated the internet. So very different from what it was like 10 yrs ago.

10 years ago barely anyone was making money and all fo those "free" sites needed to start colleting money in fees or advertising or close down... The internet still runs off of money - remember the days of free dialup and free broadband? They can't make it being free and stay online indefinately.

you win this battle

Mark Cuban:"This will never work, you will be sued into oblivion. BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!"
YouTube:"We just struck deals with the people who you think would sue us, so it's not happening Cuban."
Mark Cuban:"You win this round, YouTube. Touche, YouTube, touche. But you haven't seen the last of me, I will return!"
YouTube:"Bring it Cuban, bring it."

Can't be correct ALL the time...

which this has proved- Mr. Cuban doesn't know everything. But I DO wonder what his ulterior motives are.

I'm sure Cuban is choking on his obvious stupidity. A dot-com one hit wonder is all he is.

Calm down folks.

Mark Cuban might be proven right in the long run. In the last week we have seen Gruoper and Bolt feel the lawsuit whip. Everyone knows that in business you go after the small fish 1st. Once Universal or any big Media Company break the smaller companies in court , they will use that as leverage to go after the bigger companies. You tube might not get sued into oblivion but the cost of showing videos will definitely be higher.

The reason Universal didn't sue YouTube is because Universal has a licensing deal with YouTube.

Mark Cuban

I would laugh if Mark Cuban saw all the stuff people are posting about him then said I will get them and just buys this site then bans everyone downing him.

I think he will be alright and does not care about being right I mean he is fucking rich.

Anyway I'm always right myself just sometimes the facts don't agree with me.

Anyway I saw allot of posts on here saying youtube could never make money and would get sued into the ground.

YouTube

I have noticed in the past month a large increase of ads on YouTube, and the numbers don't add up on the site either. Example: 'Most Viewed' videos are not the ones that are most viewed. There are videos there that have 20,000 less views than others on the site...I think YouTube is putting up what they think will draw more viewers.

I wish there was a tab at the top for ads...if you want to view a movie trailer, go there; let armatures have the other part of the site.
